Bixonimania is not a real disease. But after researchers planted two bogus preprints describing the fictional condition online, several AI chatbots reportedly explained it as though it were legitimate—and the invented disease later appeared in scholarly citations. The episode was funny because the papers contained pop-culture clues; it was serious because neither fluent AI answers nor academic-looking references proved the claim was true.
What was bixonimania?
Bixonimania was a fabricated eye or skin condition, supposedly linked to prolonged screen use, blue light and rubbing the eyes. The invented symptoms included pink or irritated eyelids or surrounding skin. It is not a recognized diagnosis, and the experiment did not discover a disease, test a treatment or establish a medical finding.
Even the name should have invited scrutiny: “mania” is not a conventional label for an eye or skin disorder. That was one of several clues that the claim needed checking rather than repeating.

In 2024, a team led by University of Gothenburg medical researcher Almira Osmanovic Thunström created two deliberately bogus studies and uploaded them in stages to Preprints.org, a repository for research manuscripts shared before formal peer review. The test was whether AI systems would recognize the material’s warning signs—or accept academic-looking text as evidence.

A preprint can help researchers share work quickly, but appearing on a preprint server does not mean a study has passed peer review or been shown to be valid. That distinction matters especially for health claims: a paper’s availability is not medical endorsement. Nature’s report says the two bixonimania preprints were removed from Preprints.org on April 10, 2026.
The papers had clues hiding in plain sight
The fake studies included references to Star Trek, The Simpsons and The Lord of the Rings, among other reported red flags. Their strange references and implausible details should have prompted readers to check the cited sources, authors and affiliations. Instead, the papers’ scholarly trappings helped give a fictional claim the appearance of research.
That is the mechanism behind the joke: academic style can look like authority, but formatting and technical language do not verify a source. A reference list itself needs to be checked.

Several chatbots reportedly described it as real
Accounts of the experiment reported that OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft’s Bing Copilot and Perplexity gave explanations of bixonimania as though it were a genuine condition. According to Futurism’s account of the reporting, ChatGPT’s answers were inconsistent: at one point it reportedly characterized the condition as made up or pseudoscientific, then treated it as real when asked again days later.
These reports describe particular tests and outputs, not every version of those services or their behavior today. Answers can vary with the model, date, prompt and whether the system can retrieve web material. The important point is that a confident answer is not the same as a verified one.
How a fictional disease reached scholarly citations
The misinformation did not stop with chatbot responses. The fabricated material was also cited in scholarly literature. Futurism reports that a journal issued a retraction notice after Nature contacted it; the notice acknowledged “three irrelevant references,” including one to a fictitious disease. The journal was Cureus.

This does not establish that AI alone caused those citations. It shows a broader propagation loop: fabricated claims became publicly available, AI systems repeated them, and the fictional material also entered human-produced scholarly references. Once a claim is repeated or cited, it can acquire the appearance of independent support even when nobody has checked the underlying source.
What the incident reveals about AI answers
Language models produce text based on patterns in their training data and, in some cases, material retrieved at answer time. They do not automatically confirm that every paper, author, disease or institution they mention is genuine. A citation can look plausible while being fabricated, irrelevant or misrepresented. If false material is indexed and repeated across websites, retrieval can make it easier for a system to encounter and repeat it.
- Source-ingestion failure: Publicly available text is treated as if availability were proof.
- Authority mimicry: Technical prose and academic formatting create an impression of legitimacy without validating the evidence.
- Citation laundering: A false claim can look more credible after it appears in another paper or chatbot answer.
- Inconsistent correction: A system may reject a claim in one exchange and assert it in another.
- Human verification failure: Researchers and editors can also pass along references without checking the original source.
The careful description is not that chatbots “believed” in bixonimania. They generated answers presenting a fictional disease as real. Nor does this episode prove that all AI-generated medical information is wrong. It demonstrates a specific, consequential failure: systems can turn unverified material into authoritative-sounding explanations.

Why the stakes are higher for health claims
A person searching for an explanation of irritated skin or eye discomfort could be distracted by a fake diagnosis, worry unnecessarily or pursue inappropriate self-treatment. A clinician, researcher or editor could also be misled by a plausible-sounding answer or reference. The risk grows when a false claim appears in several places, because repetition can be mistaken for independent confirmation.
General-purpose chatbots can help people frame questions or understand established health information, but they are not substitutes for a clinical assessment. A model cannot examine a patient, establish their full medical context or turn an unverified paper into a diagnosis. Seek qualified medical advice for symptoms or decisions about treatment.
How to check a claimed disease or medical paper
- Look for independent medical recognition. Check whether the condition appears in reputable medical references, clinical guidelines or recognized disease databases—not just chatbot answers or copied web pages.
- Verify the paper itself. Search for its title and DOI, then confirm that the record exists and that the paper says what a chatbot claims it says. A citation that cannot be located is a warning sign.
- Check the publication status. Find out whether the item is a preprint or peer-reviewed article, and look for corrections, expressions of concern or retractions. Peer review is not a guarantee of truth, but preprint status is not peer review.
- Inspect authors and affiliations. Confirm that the named researchers and institutions are real and that the stated affiliations fit the work. Treat implausible references, unusual claims or mismatched details as reasons to investigate further.
- Ask a qualified clinician about personal symptoms. Do not use a chatbot’s explanation of a rare or unfamiliar condition as a diagnosis or treatment plan.
