Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For repeatable website screenshots, set the browser’s prefers-reduced-motion value explicitly and separately decide what the capture should do with animations. In Playwright, use reducedMotion: 'reduce' (or 'no-preference') for the preference, then use screenshot-time animation controls such as animations: 'disabled'. Keep the viewport and image scale fixed, and handle clocks, rotating content, and other changing data independently.
Two controls determine whether motion is repeatable
Motion consistency requires two decisions that are easy to conflate:
| Control | What it changes | Typical setting for visual regression |
|---|---|---|
| Preference emulation | The value page CSS and JavaScript read through prefers-reduced-motion. |
reduce |
| Capture-time animation treatment | How the screenshot operation handles CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations while capturing. | disabled |
The preference is a signal, not a guarantee. A page must implement a response to that signal. Capture-time disabling acts independently and can stabilize a page even when its code ignores the media query. Conversely, emulating reduced motion is important when you want the screenshot to represent the experience of a user who requests less motion, rather than merely hiding animation at the last moment.
Configure Playwright Test for a fixed preference
Set the project-wide value
Put an explicit value in playwright.config.ts so the operating system running CI cannot silently choose the preference:

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
reducedMotion: 'reduce',
},
});
Playwright documents reduce and no-preference. Its documented default is no-preference, so leaving the option unset can produce a different render on a machine whose system setting differs from the one used locally. The relevant APIs also document null for resetting to system defaults; that is useful when you intentionally want the host preference, but it is a poor choice for a reproducible visual baseline.
Use an explicit value for each visual test matrix
If your product needs both experiences, run separate projects or contexts with named expectations: one project using reduce and another using no-preference. Do not let the test runner inherit the developer’s desktop setting. Store the preference alongside the snapshot set so a reviewer can tell which user experience the image represents.
Disable or allow animation at screenshot time
Stable screenshots with disabled animations
Playwright screenshot assertions default the animations option to 'disabled'. A finite animation is fast-forwarded to completion and its transitionend event is fired. An infinite animation is canceled, captured in its initial state, and then played over after the screenshot. This behavior is different from reduced-motion emulation: the former changes capture handling, while the latter changes what page code observes.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page has a stable reduced-motion snapshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png', {
animations: 'disabled',
});
});
Use animations: 'allow' only when the purpose of the test is to capture motion itself. Such a test needs a deterministic point in the timeline; otherwise two runs can legitimately produce different pixels.
Understand the assertion’s stability check
Screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive captures to match before comparing the result. That protects against a page that is still settling, but it cannot make a clock, rotating headline, live counter, or continuously changing feed deterministic. For those elements, freeze the data in the test, mock the relevant response, wait for a known state, or deliberately hide the element in the screenshot.
Suppress only content that is truly irrelevant
Playwright supports injecting screenshot-specific styles. Use that facility to hide a timestamp, caret, advertisement slot, or other known source of noise, or to set a deterministic property such as a fixed caret visibility. Keep the suppression narrow: removing a component that is part of the intended design can make a passing snapshot misleading. A CSS rule injected only for the assertion is preferable to changing production styles.

Make the page respond to reduced motion
CSS effects
For CSS-driven effects, provide an alternate rule set:
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) {
.hero,
.modal,
.carousel {
animation: none;
transition: none;
scroll-behavior: auto;
}
}
The exact replacement should preserve meaning. A moving carousel might become a static first panel; a decorative fade might disappear; a transition between states might become an immediate change. The media query only exposes the user preference. It does not automatically stop a class that has no reduced-motion rule.
JavaScript effects
JavaScript can read the same preference and choose whether to start an effect:
const reduceMotion = window.matchMedia(
'(prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)'
).matches;
if (!reduceMotion) {
startDecorativeAnimation();
}
For long-lived components, listen for changes to the media query and stop or restart nonessential effects when the value changes. W3C WAI describes this approach as one technique for allowing users to prevent motion; using this particular technique alone is not a blanket guarantee of WCAG conformance.
Check the result manually in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools and open the Rendering panel.
- Find the control for emulating the CSS media feature
prefers-reduced-motion. - Choose the reduced-motion value and inspect the page, including smooth scrolling, menus, carousels, and transitions.
- Repeat with the normal preference to verify that both intentional experiences work.
This is a useful accessibility review, but it is not a substitute for setting the preference in automated contexts. A DevTools choice is local to that inspection session; a Playwright project setting travels with the test configuration.
Hold the other screenshot variables constant
Viewport and device scale
Even with motion disabled, changing dimensions changes line wrapping, responsive breakpoints, image selection, and layout. Fix the viewport in the browser context and use the same screenshot scale for every baseline. Playwright distinguishes CSS-pixel capture from device-pixel capture; decide which representation your snapshots require and keep it fixed. A retina or device-scale change can alter the pixel dimensions of the file without any CSS change.

Loading and dynamic state
- Navigate with a deliberate readiness condition, such as a known selector or a documented network-idle point.
- Wait for images or application data that are required for the assertion.
- Freeze dates, random values, rotating content, and live counters in test data rather than expecting reduced motion to affect them.
- Use a fixed locale, timezone, color scheme, and authentication state when those values influence rendering.
Do not treat a successful “two identical captures” check as proof that the page is semantically correct. It only shows that the pixels stabilized under the conditions you supplied.
A practical repeatable workflow
- Choose the user experience. Decide whether the baseline represents
reduceorno-preference; record that choice with the snapshots. - Configure the context. Set
use.reducedMotionexplicitly in Playwright Test. - Fix geometry. Pin the viewport, browser, device scale, and full-page or viewport-only mode.
- Reach a known state. Wait for a selector or application-ready signal and provide deterministic data.
- Choose animation handling. Use
animations: 'disabled'for a static visual baseline, or'allow'for a test whose purpose is motion. - Handle residual noise. Inject narrowly scoped screenshot styles or mock the source of clocks, feeds, and rotating modules.
- Review both modes. If the site promises reduced-motion support, inspect the rendered result with the preference emulated and confirm that essential information remains available.
Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
The page still moves when reducedMotion is set
The site may not implement the media query, or the effect may be driven by a library that does not consult it. Keep the preference for accessibility coverage and add capture-time animation disabling or a narrowly targeted screenshot style for the visual baseline.
Local and CI images differ
Check the explicit reduced-motion value first, then compare viewport dimensions, screenshot scale, browser version, fonts, timezone, locale, and test data. An inherited system preference, a missing font, or a different device-pixel setting can change pixels even when the application code is identical.
The assertion times out waiting for stability
Look for an infinite animation, a blinking cursor, a live region that constantly updates, or a resource that never finishes. Disable animations, wait for a concrete application-ready selector, mock the changing request, or suppress only the known unstable element. Do not increase the timeout indefinitely without identifying what changes.
A carousel or spinner is frozen in an unexpected frame
Disabled animation handling may fast-forward a finite effect or reset an infinite one. If a particular frame is part of the requirement, expose a deterministic application state (for example, a selected slide) and capture that state rather than relying on timing.
DevTools looks correct but automation does not
DevTools emulation affects the inspected browser session. Verify that the automated context sets the same preference and that the screenshot assertion is not allowing animations. Also check whether the page reads the preference only during startup; create the context with the desired value before navigation.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Disabling animation can reduce waiting caused by transitions, but it is not a performance benchmark and does not fix slow network requests or heavy JavaScript. The most reliable gains come from deterministic data, fixed geometry, and explicit readiness conditions. Keep screenshot files and snapshot names tied to the preference and scale so an accidental configuration change produces an obvious review.
For large suites, run the same configuration on every worker, avoid sharing a mutable browser context, and update snapshots only after reviewing why the rendered state changed. A reduced-motion baseline should not silently replace a normal-motion baseline; they represent different user preferences.

Can I compare reduced and normal motion in one test run?
Yes. Use separate Playwright projects or contexts with explicit reduce and no-preference values, and keep their snapshot names and configuration distinct.
Is a reduced-motion snapshot an accessibility conformance test?
It is evidence that you inspected one preference state. Accessibility conformance depends on the complete implementation and applicable requirements, not on using one media-query technique alone.
