A pre-launch leak suggested that the Redmi A5 might come in NFC and non-NFC regional versions. The Redmi A5 went on sale in 2025, but Xiaomi’s Malaysian and Vietnamese support pages say the phone does not support NFC. No authoritative Xiaomi source confirms a retail Redmi A5 with NFC, so buyers should not rely on a listing that claims otherwise.
What the Redmi A5 leak actually said
In reports published around the end of December 2024 and beginning of January 2025, model information reportedly found in the GSMA IMEI database was interpreted as evidence of several regional versions of the Redmi A5 family. One report suggested that some versions might have NFC while others would not, and forecast a possible February–March 2025 launch. That timing was a prediction, not an announced release date.
The reports also connected a possible POCO-branded relative to the Redmi A5, later associated in secondary coverage with the POCO C71. The database sightings were evidence that model numbers existed; the conclusions about NFC and product relationships were interpretations, not Xiaomi feature announcements. XiaomiTime’s original leak report, IT Home’s contemporaneous coverage and Gadgets 360’s report described the claims before launch.
What Xiaomi says about NFC after launch
The Redmi A5 became an official Xiaomi product in 2025. Xiaomi’s Malaysian FAQ says the Redmi A5 does not support NFC, and its Vietnamese FAQ gives the same answer. These later manufacturer statements are stronger evidence about the shipping phone than a pre-launch interpretation of database entries: Xiaomi Malaysia’s Redmi A5 FAQ and Xiaomi Vietnam’s Redmi A5 FAQ.

Those are regional support pages, not a universal statement covering every unit ever sold worldwide. Still, no authoritative Xiaomi source located for this article confirms a retail Redmi A5 NFC version. Treat the Redmi A5 as a non-NFC phone unless Xiaomi’s official specification for the exact model and market explicitly says otherwise.
Why a leak could mention NFC when retail documentation does not
The gap between the rumor and Xiaomi’s later FAQs does not establish what happened internally. Plausible explanations include database entries for related POCO or regional models being interpreted as Redmi A5 variants, a planned version changing before release, or differences in model numbers reflecting certifications, network bands or memory rather than NFC. The leak and the later official FAQ do not prove which explanation is correct.

Retail listings can also copy specifications across similarly named phones. Do not treat an “NFC” field on a marketplace page as proof that the particular Redmi A5 SKU has NFC, and do not assume the POCO C71 has identical hardware just because secondary reports describe it as related.

Redmi A5 specifications: what the sources establish
Xiaomi’s product pages document the phone’s general features and regional specifications. Details can differ by market, and a regional page should not be treated as a universal specification sheet.

Xiaomi’s global Redmi A5 product page confirms the product identity, but it should not substitute for the specification page serving your country. Memory options, bundled charger, colours and pricing may vary by market; no single configuration or price should be assumed to apply worldwide.
What the lack of NFC means in daily use
NFC is a short-range radio feature built into a phone’s hardware. Where supported by the phone, service and local provider, it can enable contactless payments, NFC tag reading, some transit or access-card functions, and quick pairing with compatible accessories.

- Mobile payments: NFC on the phone is only one requirement. Google Wallet or another payment service, the country, the bank, device certification and the account must also be supported.
- Transit and access: Availability depends on the local transit operator or access system and its supported devices.
- Other ways to connect or pay: Bluetooth pairing does not require NFC, and QR-code payments use a camera and app rather than NFC.
- Apps and updates: Installing an app or receiving a software update cannot add NFC hardware or its antenna to a phone that lacks them.
How to check the exact Redmi A5 before buying
- Find the full model number. Read it on the box or invoice, or check Settings → About phone. A product name alone may not distinguish regional versions.
- Use Xiaomi’s page for your country. Open the local Redmi A5 specification or support page, rather than relying on specifications for a different market.
- Search the official information for “NFC.” If contactless payments or tag reading matter to you, look for explicit NFC support for the exact model. If it is absent or the page says NFC is unsupported, do not count on the feature.
- Match the retailer SKU to the device. Verify that the listing’s model number and memory configuration match the item being sold. Be wary of generic product templates that may mix details from other Redmi phones.
- Ask the seller for proof if the listing conflicts. Request the official specification sheet for the exact SKU or a demonstration on the handset. An NFC menu entry can help, but the manufacturer’s model-specific specification is the stronger check.
- Check the consequences of an import. Warranty coverage, LTE-band compatibility, software region and payment-service certification may differ from a locally sold phone.
Should you buy a Redmi A5 if you need contactless payments?
Not on the assumption that it has NFC. Xiaomi’s regional documentation says it does not, and the pre-launch leak does not confirm that an NFC-equipped version reached retail. If contactless payments are essential, choose a phone whose manufacturer specification for your exact local model explicitly lists NFC, then confirm that your bank and payment service support it. The Redmi A5 may still suit basic use if its other features meet your needs, but the leak is not a sound basis for buying it as an NFC phone.
