The REDMAGIC 9S Pro is a real gaming-phone refresh, launched globally in July 2024 with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version. “Snapdragon 8S Gen 3” is the wrong name: that is a separate Qualcomm platform. The Leading Version raises peak clocks, adds a revised cooling system and keeps the 9 Pro’s gaming-focused design, but it is not a wholly new generation.
As of August 18, 2026, REDMAGIC’s international store marks the 9S Pro out of stock and promotes the newer REDMAGIC 10 Pro. Any purchase now should therefore be evaluated as remaining regional stock, refurbished inventory or a used phone—not as a routinely available current model.
What the “overclocked Snapdragon” actually is
REDMAGIC and Qualcomm call the chip the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version. It is a higher-clocked bin of the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, conceptually similar to the “for Galaxy” version used in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 family. It is not the separate Snapdragon 8S Gen 3.

Those are peak frequencies, not a promise of a proportional frame-rate increase. Game optimization, thermal conditions, performance mode and whether a title is CPU- or GPU-limited determine the result.

The distinction matters most in benchmarks and sustained heavy workloads. A game capped at 60 or 120 frames per second may look identical on a 9 Pro and 9S Pro even when the newer phone posts a higher benchmark score.
REDMAGIC’s official specifications list 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X memory and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Brightness, charging time and endurance figures are manufacturer specifications. REDMAGIC says a full charge can take about 35 minutes under its stated conditions; the supplied charger, battery temperature and regional model affect that result.

The 9S Pro is best understood as a mid-cycle performance refresh. Reviews from TechRadar and Android Central describe a genuine but generally modest advantage in ordinary gaming. Existing 9 Pro owners should not upgrade solely for the clock-speed change.
Gaming hardware and thermal trade-offs
Active cooling
The ICE 13.5 system combines a large vapor chamber, additional thermal materials and a built-in fan rated at up to 22,000rpm. REDMAGIC claims temperature reductions of up to 19.5°C and a 10,182mm² vapor-chamber area. Those are company figures, not universal test results. Independent coverage also raises questions about throttling and consistency during long workloads.
A fan can preserve performance during demanding sessions, but it introduces noise, moving parts, dust exposure and extra power consumption. High-performance modes can still make the chassis warm and drain the battery faster.

Controls and display
The uninterrupted 6.8-inch panel has no punch-hole cutout, which benefits games and video. Its under-display camera generally produces weaker selfies than a conventional front camera. Two 520Hz shoulder triggers, customizable RGB lighting, a headphone jack and DisplayPort output are more meaningful differentiators for competitive players than a small benchmark lead.

Cameras and everyday use
The rear array uses a 50MP Samsung GN5 main sensor with optical stabilization, a 50MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro camera. Megapixel counts do not make this a camera-first phone: Tom’s Guide and TechRadar identify image quality, processing and the 16MP under-display selfie camera as weaknesses.
The large body, gaming software and lack of a stated water-resistance rating also make it less conventional than mainstream flagships. Check the exact regional documentation before assuming any IP protection, charger compatibility or carrier support.

Software support
The phone shipped with REDMAGIC OS 9.5. REDMAGIC’s international FAQ says it provides regular updates every one to two months for more than two years, with at least one Android OS update. That is a limited commitment beside major flagship policies and should not be interpreted as guaranteed long-term Android-version or security support.
The official update log lists regional V10.0.7 EEA and V10.0.7MR1 firmware, with a last-updated date of February 4, 2026. Reviews also report rough translations, bugs and less polish than mainstream Android interfaces.

The global announcement was published on July 16, 2024. Japan opened preorders from July 25, and European availability followed in late July. Launch coverage reported approximately $649 for 12GB/256GB and $799 for 16GB/512GB, with taxes, promotions and configuration affecting each market.

The international product page later displayed $779 for a 16GB/512GB listing, but the same page now says the product is out of stock: REDMAGIC international store. That displayed figure is not current confirmed retail pricing. Used or imported buyers should verify battery health, fan noise, dead pixels, trigger wear, charging-port condition, warranty and return rights.
Who should buy the 9S Pro?
It makes sense for
- Competitive mobile gamers who can use shoulder triggers, high refresh rates and performance modes.
- Players and emulation users who value sustained performance, a large battery and active cooling.
- Buyers who specifically want a headphone jack, unobstructed display and gaming controls.
- Shoppers willing to accept weaker cameras and shorter software-support commitments.
It is a poor fit for
- Camera-first users or anyone expecting flagship photography.
- People requiring long-term Android updates, strong water resistance or mainstream repair coverage.
- Anyone who needs guaranteed compatibility with a particular carrier; check the exact regional LTE and 5G bands.
- REDMAGIC 9 Pro owners expecting a major generational upgrade.
Buying checklist in 2026
- Confirm whether the listing is new, refurbished or used; an official page showing a price may still be out of stock.
- Match the model’s LTE/5G bands, firmware region, charger and warranty to your country and carrier.
- Choose 512GB if you install many large games; the official specifications do not indicate a microSD slot.
- Test or obtain assurances about fan noise, sustained heat, display condition, triggers and USB-C wear.
- Compare the total price with the newer REDMAGIC generation before paying launch-era money for an older model.
Verdict
The REDMAGIC 9S Pro delivers a faster-clocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, capable active cooling and an unusually complete set of gaming controls. It is meaningfully better on paper and in demanding workloads, but most games will not transform because of a 0.1GHz CPU increase. Treat it as an excellent gaming-focused refresh—not a new architecture and not an automatic upgrade from the 9 Pro. In 2026, stock status, warranty, regional compatibility and the phone’s limited software promise matter as much as its performance.
