1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no single “correct” website image size. Choose dimensions from the image’s rendered CSS slot, then provide width variants for responsive layouts and higher-density screens. A 600-pixel content column usually needs an image candidate near 600 pixels wide at 1× density, with larger candidates available for 2× displays. The browser can then select an efficient file instead of downloading an oversized original.
Start with the rendered slot, not a generic chart
“Image size” means pixel dimensions, such as 1200 × 800, while the rendered slot is the width and height the browser actually gives the image in CSS. Measure that slot in the real layout at the breakpoints you support. A 500 × 500 pixel container is optimally served by a 500 × 500 pixel image when other variables are equal, according to Google web.dev’s responsive-image guidance.
If your article column is 600 CSS pixels wide, a 600-pixel candidate is a sensible 1× starting point. A device with a 2× device-pixel ratio may benefit from a candidate around 1200 pixels wide, provided the extra detail is visible and the file size is acceptable. This is an implementation heuristic, not a universal standard: layout width, density, compression, subject detail and network conditions all affect the choice.
Measure the slot
- Open the page at desktop, tablet and phone widths.
- Use browser developer tools to inspect the image element and record its rendered width and height.
- Check whether the theme crops the image with
object-fit, a fixed aspect ratio or a background-image rule. - Record the widest slot you actually serve; do not size every upload for an unbounded viewport.
Practical starting dimensions by use case
The following are workflow starting points, not standards. Replace them with measurements from your design.

| Use case | How to choose the largest candidate | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Full-width hero | Use roughly the widest content or viewport slot you serve, then add smaller mobile and tablet widths. | Plan the crop and focal point; a mobile art-directed crop may need a different composition. |
| Article or blog image | Match the article column’s maximum rendered width. | Do not upload a multi-thousand-pixel camera original unless the layout can display that detail. |
| Card or grid thumbnail | Generate candidates near the card’s rendered width. | Preserve the card’s aspect ratio; use a separate crop only when the design requires it. |
| Logo, icon or diagram | Use SVG when the artwork is genuinely vector-based. | Use a raster fallback when necessary and preserve transparency or fine detail. |
Responsive delivery with srcset and sizes
For ordinary responsive images, provide several width variants and let the browser choose. Width descriptors (the w values) tell the browser each file’s intrinsic width; sizes describes the slot at relevant breakpoints.
<img
src="article-800.webp"
srcset="article-400.webp 400w,
article-800.webp 800w,
article-1200.webp 1200w,
article-1600.webp 1600w"
sizes="(min-width: 66em) 33vw,
(min-width: 44em) 50vw,
100vw"
width="1600"
height="1067"
alt="A laptop displaying a responsive website"
loading="eager"
decoding="async">
The browser combines the viewport width, device-pixel ratio and the sizes expression to select a candidate. The expression above says the image occupies one-third of the viewport at 66em and wider, one-half at 44em, and the full viewport otherwise. Write values that describe your actual CSS, not a copied example.
Why width and height attributes matter
Always include intrinsic width and height when dimensions are known. As web.dev explains, these attributes let the browser reserve the correct aspect-ratio space before the file arrives, reducing layout movement. Keep the image fluid with CSS:
img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
display: block;
}
The attributes describe the source ratio; CSS scales the rendered size without distorting it. If a component intentionally uses a fixed ratio, set that ratio in CSS and crop deliberately rather than allowing unexpected stretching.

Use <picture> for art direction and format control
Use <picture> when mobile needs a different crop, or when you want explicit format/source selection. A different crop is art direction, not merely responsive resizing.
<picture>
<source media="(max-width: 43.99em)" srcset="hero-mobile.webp 800w" sizes="100vw">
<source type="image/avif" srcset="hero-800.avif 800w, hero-1600.avif 1600w" sizes="100vw">
<img src="hero-1600.jpg" srcset="hero-800.jpg 800w, hero-1600.jpg 1600w" sizes="100vw" width="1600" height="900" alt="Product dashboard on a desktop screen">
</picture>
Keep a broadly supported fallback in the nested img. Test the crop at each breakpoint so faces, text and focal objects remain visible.
Choose format by content, then optimize
- JPEG: a practical choice for photographs and other continuous-tone images.
- SVG: preferred for vector logos, icons, diagrams and line illustrations.
- PNG: useful when lossless raster detail or transparency is required.
- WebP or AVIF: useful in a negotiated responsive pipeline when fallback handling is in place.
No format is universally best. Resize and compress before delivery, then compare visual quality and byte weight in the real layout. A smaller file that is visibly soft is not an improvement. Images account for more than 60% of the bytes needed to load a web page on average, according to a course statement in web.dev’s responsive-images material, so image decisions can materially affect loading.
Compression workflow
- Export a master at the largest slot width you actually need.
- Generate the width candidates used by
srcset. - Encode photographic candidates as JPEG, WebP or AVIF according to your browser-support and delivery strategy.
- Inspect text, edges, gradients and faces at 100% zoom.
- Record resulting byte sizes and test on a representative page, not in isolation.
Loading priority and layout behavior
Lazy-load images below the fold with loading="lazy". Do not unnecessarily defer the largest or primary above-the-fold image; it is often part of the first visual impression. Use decoding="async" when asynchronous decoding suits your page, and reserve space with dimensions or an aspect-ratio box.

For a hero that is a CSS background, responsive image selection is less automatic. Consider an actual img when the image is content, needs an accessible alternative, or benefits from srcset. Keep decorative backgrounds out of the accessibility tree and ensure text remains readable over every crop.
Should you make separate mobile images?
Make a separate mobile source only when the composition changes: for example, a wide desktop scene whose subject would be lost when narrowed to a phone. If the same composition merely scales down, keep one source set with multiple widths. Separate files add authoring, caching and testing work, so use them for a clear crop or content reason rather than as a default.
WordPress and CMS considerations
WordPress has generated responsive srcset and sizes attributes since WordPress 4.4. Editors should still inspect the theme’s actual slot widths, crop behavior and generated file sizes. A plugin can produce technically valid candidates that are still too large for a narrow card, or crops that remove the subject. Verify the rendered HTML and network requests at representative breakpoints.
Verification checklist
- Measure every distinct component slot at its breakpoints.
- Confirm the selected candidate is large enough for the slot and density without being excessive.
- Check that
sizesmatches CSS; an incorrect value can cause the browser to download the wrong width. - Include accurate
widthandheightattributes. - Check aspect ratio, focal point and crop on narrow screens.
- Inspect format, compression quality and byte weight in the browser’s Network panel.
- Confirm below-fold images are lazy-loaded and the primary image is not accidentally deferred.
- Test keyboard, screen-reader and reduced-data scenarios where relevant.
Common problems and fixes
The image looks blurry on a high-density screen
Cause: the largest available candidate is close to the CSS width, while the device needs more source pixels. Fix: add a larger candidate, then verify that the extra detail justifies its byte cost.

The browser downloads an unexpectedly large file
Cause: sizes overstates the rendered slot, or the candidate ladder jumps too sharply. Fix: measure the slot, correct sizes, and add intermediate widths.
The layout jumps while loading
Cause: missing intrinsic dimensions or an unknown aspect ratio. Fix: add width and height attributes, or reserve space with CSS.
The mobile crop cuts off important content
Cause: a desktop crop is being scaled rather than art-directed. Fix: provide a mobile <source> in <picture> and test the focal point at the smallest supported width.
A modern format fails for some visitors
Cause: no compatible fallback or incorrect source ordering. Fix: retain a supported format in the nested img and test with format support disabled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every image be exactly twice its displayed width?
No. Use a larger candidate when device-pixel density and visible detail justify it, then compare the resulting quality and bytes in the actual layout.
