A rental listing in Washington, D.C.’s Fort Totten area reportedly included a bathroom photo showing a grotesque, apparently humanlike figure emerging from a mirror. The image strongly suggests AI-assisted editing, but the available reporting does not prove which tool created it—or even definitively establish that AI was involved.
The unsettling image was later removed from at least some versions of the listing. The more important issue is not whether the property was haunted. It is whether renters can trust digitally altered photos to represent a home accurately.
What happened to the rental listing?
On February 18, 2026, Futurism reported that a Reddit user discovered the unusual image while browsing rental listings. The property was reportedly in or near Fort Totten, in northern Washington, D.C., and appeared across several real-estate platforms, including Apartments.com, Redfin, and Zillow.
One bathroom image showed what appeared to be a warped figure protruding through or around the bathroom mirror. The figure had distorted anatomy and multiple limbs, while parts of the room appeared inconsistent with a normal photograph. Viewers interpreted it as a demon, but there is no evidence that the property contained a supernatural figure or that the bathroom was haunted.

Futurism said the Apartments.com version was taken down by the time of its report. Other copies reportedly remained on platforms such as Redfin, although the disturbing image was no longer visible in at least some versions. An Internet Archive copy was also reportedly preserved. Listing pages change quickly, so those details describe the listing’s reported historical status—not a verified current status.
Why the image appears to involve AI
The strongest evidence is visual rather than an official admission. A second version of the bathroom reportedly looked more ordinary. The edited-looking version appeared to remove personal items from a vanity while adding an apparently out-of-place ottoman or cushion.
The figure’s anatomy, its interaction with the mirror, and the room’s object placement are also consistent with common generative-image artifacts. Mirrors are particularly difficult for image-generation systems because they require accurate reflection geometry, lighting, perspective, occlusion, and object identity.

However, “consistent with AI editing” is not the same as confirmed AI generation. The available reporting did not identify:

- the software or AI service used;
- the person who edited the image;
- the original photograph;
- whether the edit was intentional;
- who uploaded the final file; or
- whether the brokerage approved it.
The image reportedly carried a Bright MLS watermark, but a watermark does not establish that Bright MLS created or edited the picture. It may simply identify a listing or syndication workflow.
Was the photo fraudulent or against MLS rules?
That cannot be determined from the available information. A bizarre image could be an accidental editing error rather than an intentional attempt to deceive renters. But an accidental error can still create a misleading impression.
Real-estate photo rules vary by MLS, platform, jurisdiction, and listing agreement. In general, there is an important difference between improving exposure and changing what a property appears to contain. Removing temporary clutter or correcting brightness may be relatively minor. Adding furniture, changing fixtures, erasing defects, altering views, or modifying structural features can materially change a renter’s expectations.

What happened to the realtor’s explanation?
Futurism said it contacted the real-estate company for comment. The report did not include a substantive public explanation identifying the editing process, the responsible party, or why the image appeared online.
Responsibility could potentially involve several different parties: the listing agent, brokerage, property manager, photographer, property owner, editing vendor, MLS, or a syndication feed. It would be premature to blame a specific realtor without confirmation of who created and uploaded the image.
Why this matters beyond the joke
The demon-like figure makes the story easy to share, but the consumer-trust problem is more ordinary and more consequential. Renters use listing photos to decide whether to schedule a viewing, whether a property appears worth its rent, and whether a kitchen, bathroom, entrance, or room layout meets their needs.

Once a photo enters a syndicated listing system, the same error can spread across several websites. A human review step is therefore necessary even when the original edit was intended only to improve image quality.
When AI editing can be legitimate
AI is not automatically inappropriate for property photography. Potentially legitimate uses include:
- correcting exposure, color, or minor image noise;
- removing temporary clutter, where the result does not misrepresent the property;
- creating virtual staging with clear labeling;
- showing alternative furniture arrangements; and
- improving image resolution without changing physical features.
The safeguards matter. Virtually staged or materially altered images should be labeled, and unedited photos should be available when the changes could affect a renter’s decision. Structural accuracy, room dimensions, fixtures, windows, views, and property condition should not be fabricated or concealed.
How renters can check a suspicious listing photo
- Compare platforms. Check the same room on Zillow, Redfin, Apartments.com, and the brokerage’s own website. Different versions can reveal that one image has been altered.
- Inspect reflections. Look for mirrors that do not match the room, inconsistent lighting, impossible angles, or objects appearing only inside the reflection.
- Check repeated details. AI-generated images often distort text, tile patterns, fixtures, hands, furniture legs, and small bathroom accessories.
- Ask directly. Request confirmation that the photos are original, virtually staged, or AI-enhanced. Ask for an unedited photo if the distinction matters.
- Request a viewing or video tour. A live walkthrough is a better way to verify layout, condition, and fixtures than relying only on marketing images.
- Save evidence. Keep screenshots of materially misleading images before contacting the agent or platform, since listing pages can be changed or removed.
- Do not infer paranormal activity. A strange figure in a listing image is more plausibly an image problem than evidence about the property itself.
Is this part of a wider pattern?
The available coverage mentions another unrelated rental-listing image in which viewers believed they saw a tiny distorted person near a toilet tank. That is an anecdotal comparison, not evidence of a measured or widespread trend.

AI-generated errors and conventional digital staging can both make listing photos misleading. The central question is not whether every visual anomaly came from AI. It is whether the final image accurately represents the property and whether someone checked it before publication.
The bottom line
The Washington, D.C., rental photo appears to have been AI-altered or otherwise digitally manipulated, and its visual inconsistencies make generative editing a strong possibility. But the specific tool, editor, workflow, and intent remain unconfirmed. The listing’s removal does not resolve those questions.
The figure may have been fictional, but the risk is real: renters can make housing decisions based on images that were never properly verified. Treat listing photos as marketing material, compare them across platforms, ask what has been edited, and verify important details in person or by live video before relying on them.
