Really Simple SSL is now called Really Simple Security, reflecting a move from HTTPS setup to a broader WordPress security toolkit. It combines SSL tools with hardening, login protection, vulnerability alerts, security headers and a plugin-level firewall. The key caveat: its own publisher says that firewall is not a full web application firewall (WAF), so the plugin is better considered one layer in a site’s defenses than a replacement for cloud or hosting security.

What is Really Simple SSL called now?

The product is branded Really Simple Security. Really Simple Plugins says it began as Really Simple SSL and grew into a wider WordPress security toolkit; the company announced the rebrand in 2024. The legacy name still appears in some support material, so a reference to Really Simple SSL may mean the current plugin rather than a separate product. The product overview describes its current feature set.

Really Simple Plugins reports more than 3,000,000 sites and more than 8,500 five-star reviews on its About page, accessed in 2026. Those are publisher-reported counts, not independent measures of adoption, security or quality. About Really Simple Plugins

What does Really Simple Security include?

The publisher’s overview groups the plugin’s advertised capabilities into several areas. These are documented product features, not results from independent installation or security testing.

SSL and HTTPS

SSL tools include enforcing SSL, redirecting visitors to HTTPS, automatically fixing mixed content and scanning SSL server health. Before deactivating or replacing the plugin, check how HTTPS redirects are maintained: the support documentation warns that a site can revert to HTTP if SSL is not kept active separately. WordPress hardening

Hardening options include security presets and configuration checks. The product page names file-permission checks and restricting admin-user creation among its examples. These controls can help address configuration risks, but they do not substitute for keeping WordPress, themes, plugins and server software maintained.

Login protection

Listed login features include two-factor authentication, login-attempt limits, password security and checking compromised passwords through Have I Been Pwned integration. Review how these settings interact with any existing login, identity or security plugins before enabling overlapping controls.

Vulnerability alerts and response

The documentation says the plugin checks installed plugins and themes against vulnerability databases and can notify administrators in the dashboard or by email. Notification thresholds are configurable. The publisher says Pro vulnerability measures can take actions such as force-updating or quarantining affected components. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every vulnerability will be detected or safely fixed; automatic changes can also affect site behavior, so administrators should have backups and a recovery plan. Security headers

Advertised headers include HSTS, Content Security Policy, Permissions Policy and Referrer Policy. A learning mode is available for complex headers. Header policies—particularly Content Security Policy—may need adjustment to avoid breaking site features or third-party scripts, so they should be configured and checked against the site rather than applied blindly.

Does Really Simple Security include a firewall?

Yes. The plugin firewall offers WordPress-aware request controls, including region controls, IP allow/block lists, user-agent rules and blocking based on excessive 404 activity, along with an event log. The vendor also documents a recovery method for administrators who lock themselves out.

But it is not a full WAF. In firewall documentation dated October 10, 2024, Really Simple Plugins’ Jarno Vos wrote: “We chose not to implement a full Web Application Firewall (WAF), as our opinion is that such functionality should not be implemented by a WordPress plugin, both for performance and security reasons.” The publisher recommends pairing its plugin firewall with a cloud firewall such as Cloudflare. That distinction matters: a plugin can apply controls within WordPress, while a cloud or hosting layer can filter traffic before it reaches the application. The plugin should not be treated as a replacement for a perimeter WAF, CDN or host-level filtering. Really Simple Plugins’ firewall documentation

Is Really Simple Security Pro worth it?

Pro is most relevant if you want paid-plan coverage or vendor-described premium vulnerability actions and support for the number of sites you manage. Whether it is worth paying for depends on those needs and the renewal price—not simply on the presence of a larger feature list. Site owners who need only HTTPS redirects or basic setup should first check whether their existing hosting, another plugin or WordPress configuration already handles those jobs.

For agencies, the five-domain Professional and 25-domain Agency tiers provide different listed coverage, but the price page’s headline information alone is not enough to determine which plan contains every feature you need. Confirm plan inclusions and license terms directly before committing.

Security limits and who should use it

Really Simple Security is a consolidation option for WordPress owners who want SSL management alongside common hardening, login, vulnerability-notification and request-filtering tools. It is not evidence that a site is secure simply because it is installed. Keep WordPress and extensions updated, maintain tested backups, use secure hosting, and add cloud or host-level filtering where the site’s exposure warrants it.

Really Simple Plugins’ coordinated disclosure policy, updated August 6, 2026, defines in-scope software and domains and sets reporting expectations for security researchers. A disclosure policy is a useful part of a vendor’s security process, but it does not establish that the plugin is vulnerability-free. Coordinated disclosure policy

  • Consider it if you want HTTPS tools and several WordPress security controls in one plugin, and understand that its firewall is only one layer.
  • Check alternatives or existing tools first if your immediate need is only SSL redirection or if your host already provides overlapping controls.
  • Pair it with perimeter protection if you need traffic filtering beyond what a WordPress plugin can provide.
  • Verify carefully before enabling changes to headers, vulnerability response or login controls, especially on a business-critical site.
