If you need a design editor inside an application your team controls, Polotno is the clearest React SDK candidate in the available official product documentation: it describes a canvas-editor library built from React components. Canva Apps and Figma widgets are different choices: they extend Canva or Figma, rather than providing a general-purpose editor component for an unrelated product. Start by deciding where the editor must run, then verify React compatibility, customization, editing and export needs, deployment, and license terms.
First decide what “embedded” means
There are two different integration patterns behind the phrase “embedded design editor.” Choosing between them before evaluating features prevents a common mismatch: building an extension for someone else’s design platform when you actually need an editor inside your own product.
An editor inside your application
An embeddable editor SDK gives your application a canvas editor that appears within your product’s own interface. Your team controls the surrounding application and decides how the editor fits into its workflow. Polotno describes its SDK as a JavaScript library with React components for building canvas editors; its quick start demonstrates composing an editor in a React application.
An extension inside Canva or Figma
A platform extension runs in the vendor’s editor environment. Canva Apps run in an iframe in the Canva editor and use Canva APIs. Figma widgets create interactive objects for Figma design files and FigJam boards. These are relevant when the destination is Canva or Figma itself; the official materials described here do not establish either as a turnkey editor component for an independent application.

That distinction is more important than whether a technology uses React-like components. Ask where the end user will open and edit the design: your application, Canva, or Figma.
What the options are designed to do
Polotno SDK: a canvas editor for your product
Polotno documents an editor assembled from React components. Its described interface includes a workspace, side panels, toolbar, zoom controls, and page timeline. The store API manages canvas data and operations such as adding, updating, and removing elements, undo and redo, selection, zoom, and import and export.

This is the most directly relevant option in the documented set when your requirement is a design editor embedded in a product you control. It is still a candidate to evaluate, not a guarantee that its defaults or feature set match your workflow. Confirm which editor components can be composed or customized and whether the store operations cover the objects and actions your users need.

This fits a feature intended to be available to Canva users while they work in Canva. Canva says apps may be distributed through its Apps Marketplace or shared privately with team members. Its Apps documentation also says new apps must implement at least one intent. Before committing, check the current intent requirements, permissions, review process, and distribution terms for your specific app.
Figma Widget API: interactive objects for Figma and FigJam
Figma’s Widget API is for custom interactive objects in Figma design files and FigJam boards. Figma describes the API as using TypeScript and JSX, with a component model similar to React. That similarity may make the approach familiar to React developers, but it does not change the integration target: the documented widgets live inside Figma and FigJam.

Compare candidates against your actual requirements
Write down the product constraints before comparing demos. A decision based only on a familiar framework name can overlook the location of the editor, platform boundaries, license scope, or the way your application needs to store and render designs.
- Set the integration target. Decide whether users need to edit inside your application or inside Canva or Figma. This is the first filter: the documented products serve different environments.
- Check React and dependency compatibility. Confirm supported React versions, peer dependencies, and the vendor’s upgrade policy against your host app. Polotno’s documentation distinguishes its default 4.x line, which targets React 19, from a legacy 3.x line for React 18. Verify current compatibility and support status for your application before adopting either line.
- Map the experience you need to control. Identify which panels, toolbar actions, branding, asset sources, and workflow constraints must be yours to shape. Polotno documents an editor composed of React components; Canva and Figma document extensions within their respective platforms. Ask vendors to confirm the customization boundaries that matter to your product.
- List editing and output requirements. Specify the objects users will edit and the operations they need. Include templates, history, selection, zoom, multi-page behavior, import and export formats, and any rendering or automation requirements. The Polotno documentation describes a canvas store and a full editor example, but fit depends on your workflow—not just the presence of a canvas.
- Trace data and deployment. Establish where design state, uploaded assets, and rendered output live, and whether that deployment model meets your security and operational requirements. The sources described here do not provide a comparative security review. Evaluate current technical documentation and contractual terms rather than inferring security properties from the integration model.
- Validate license scope and total cost. Separate an SDK license from a hosted editor subscription. Ask whether terms cover your domains and products, and clarify support, service-level commitments, rendering charges, and usage-based costs. Do not assume a hosted product’s price is the price of embedding its SDK.
React compatibility and licensing deserve early checks
Match the SDK line to the host application
React version compatibility can determine whether an otherwise suitable SDK fits your application. Polotno’s documentation says the default 4.x line targets React 19 and that a legacy 3.x line is available for React 18. Treat those as vendor-documented compatibility distinctions, not as a substitute for checking the current package requirements and support status. Before implementation, confirm peer dependencies, the supported upgrade path, and whether the line you plan to use is maintained for your use case.

Do not confuse Studio pricing with an SDK license
Polotno Studio is a hosted, self-serve editor and automation product; it is separate from the SDK used by developers to build an editor into their own application. The vendor-maintained SDK information page, marked last updated April 21, 2026, lists Grass Roots at $249 per month, self-serve at $899 per month, and enterprise as custom-quoted. These are vendor-stated terms from that page, not independently verified pricing. Confirm current SDK licensing, permitted use, and any additional charges directly before budgeting or purchase. Do not use Studio plan prices as SDK license prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical evaluation sequence
- Write a one-sentence integration requirement. For example: “Our customers create and export designs without leaving our product.” If the sentence instead says “Our customers should use our feature while working in Canva,” evaluate Canva Apps. If the destination is a Figma file or FigJam board, evaluate widgets.
- Build a feature checklist from user tasks. Describe what a user needs to create, select, change, undo, organize, import, and export. Use that list to review the documented store operations and editor components; mark anything that needs vendor confirmation.
- Test the host-stack fit before designing around the SDK. Verify React version and package requirements in a minimal integration, and check the vendor’s current support policy. Avoid planning an upgrade or depending on an older compatibility line without confirming its status.
- Review the product boundary. Identify which parts of the interface and workflow belong to your application and which are controlled by the host platform or editor SDK. For a platform extension, review current permissions, intents, review, and distribution rules.
- Get licensing and deployment questions answered in writing. Confirm allowed products and domains, asset and design-data handling, support scope, service commitments, and variable charges before production adoption.
- Choose against evidence, not resemblance. A React-like component model is not proof that a tool can be embedded in your application. Likewise, a polished hosted editor is not evidence that its SDK license, APIs, or deployment model meet your needs.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is not an embedded design-editor SDK and does not replace Polotno, Canva Apps, or Figma widgets. It is an adjacent developer tool for capturing website screenshots or PDFs—useful, for example, when your team needs screenshots of web pages as part of a workflow around a design application. If you need that capability, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for screenshot capture: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating all “embedded” products as interchangeable: write down the host environment first. A Canva app or Figma widget extends that platform; an SDK for your own application has a different integration target.
- Choosing based on React familiarity alone: verify supported React versions and dependencies, then check the editing tasks and customization boundaries. Figma’s component model is described as similar to React, but its widgets remain Figma and FigJam extensions.
- Budgeting from the wrong product page: distinguish hosted editor subscriptions from SDK licenses and confirm the actual license terms for your intended deployment.
- Assuming security or performance equivalence: the product descriptions summarized here do not establish a side-by-side security, accessibility, or performance comparison. Request current technical and contractual information and evaluate it against your application’s requirements.
- Skipping platform distribution checks: for a Canva app, confirm current intent, permission, review, and distribution requirements before relying on Marketplace or private sharing.
What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
Polotno’s AI information page gives vendor-reported figures of 300+ active businesses and 100,000+ monthly active users on Polotno Studio. Those are company claims about its products; the Studio figure is not an SDK-adopter count, and neither figure is independent validation of editor quality or fit. Canva reported 135 million people using Canva in 2023 in connection with its developer-platform announcement; that is a historical company-reported figure, not a current audience count. None of these figures replaces a feature, compatibility, deployment, or license evaluation for your application.
The available product documentation supports comparing integration patterns and documented capabilities, but it does not establish a complete market inventory or independent side-by-side testing. Treat the shortlist as a starting point for validating the current official documentation and terms of the product you are considering.
