There is no single best React chart library. Start with Recharts when you want charts assembled from React components and rendered as SVG. Choose Chart.js through react-chartjs-2 when its canvas workflow and chart types fit your application. Evaluate Apache ECharts when you need its charting engine and interaction features, while checking the React integration separately.

Choose by authoring model first

Option How you write charts Rendering Best starting point
Recharts Composable React components SVG Dashboards and ordinary business charts that should feel native to React
Chart.js + react-chartjs-2 React wrapper around Chart.js configuration Canvas Applications that already fit Chart.js types and canvas interaction
Apache ECharts ECharts option-based engine, with React integration chosen separately ECharts renderer (commonly canvas, with other renderer choices available in its ecosystem) Feature-heavy visualizations where the ECharts engine is the reason to choose it

These categories describe APIs, not a speed ranking. The available documentation does not establish a universal point-count limit or comparative benchmark. Measure representative data in the browsers and devices your users actually have.

Recharts: a React-component approach

Recharts describes itself as a composable charting library built on React components, SVG, and a lightweight dependency on D3 submodules. Its official site displayed version 3.10.1 when reviewed; verify the current release before pinning a dependency.

Install and render a first chart

npm install recharts
import { LineChart, Line, XAxis, YAxis, CartesianGrid, Tooltip, ResponsiveContainer } from 'recharts';

const data = [
  { month: 'Jan', signups: 120 },
  { month: 'Feb', signups: 180 },
  { month: 'Mar', signups: 240 }
];

export default function SignupsChart() {
  return (
    <div style={{ width: '100%', height: 320 }}>
      <ResponsiveContainer width="100%" height="100%">
        <LineChart data={data} margin={{ top: 16, right: 20, bottom: 8, left: 8 }}>
          <CartesianGrid strokeDasharray="3 3" />
          <XAxis dataKey="month" />
          <YAxis />
          <Tooltip />
          <Line type="monotone" dataKey="signups" stroke="#2563eb" strokeWidth={2} />
        </LineChart>
      </ResponsiveContainer>
    </div>
  );
}

The component tree makes axes, tooltips, series and layout explicit. You can replace Line with bars, areas, pies or composed charts while keeping React state and props in the same model. SVG also makes individual marks inspectable in the DOM, but you still need to test labels, keyboard behavior, focus order, contrast and a non-visual data alternative.

Chart.js with react-chartjs-2

Install the wrapper and Chart.js

npm install --save chart.js react-chartjs-2

The wrapper documentation supports Chart.js versions 4 and 3 and recommends Chart.js ^4.0.0 in its current quickstart. Confirm compatibility before locking versions.

Minimal doughnut example

import { Doughnut } from 'react-chartjs-2';
import { Chart as ChartJS, ArcElement, Tooltip, Legend } from 'chart.js';

ChartJS.register(ArcElement, Tooltip, Legend);

const data = {
  labels: ['Direct', 'Search', 'Referral'],
  datasets: [{
    label: 'Visits',
    data: [420, 280, 140],
    backgroundColor: ['#2563eb', '#16a34a', '#f59e0b']
  }]
};

export default function TrafficChart() {
  return <Doughnut data={data} aria-label="Visits by acquisition channel" />;
}

Bundle choices

For a controlled production bundle, import and register only the controllers, elements, scales and plugins your charts use. For a quick start, import chart.js/auto, which enables the all-features setup but can include more code than necessary. The wrapper remains a React component; Chart.js still owns the chart configuration and drawing.

Responsive Chart.js layouts

Chart.js distinguishes the canvas render size from its CSS display size. Put the canvas in a dedicated, relatively positioned container with a real height; do not rely on percentage dimensions assigned directly to the canvas.

import { Bar } from 'react-chartjs-2';

const options = {
  responsive: true,
  maintainAspectRatio: false,
  plugins: { legend: { position: 'bottom' } }
};

export default function RevenueChart({ data }) {
  return (
    <div style={{ position: 'relative', width: '100%', height: 360 }}>
      <Bar data={data} options={options} />
    </div>
  );
}

responsive: true watches the parent, while maintainAspectRatio: false allows the container’s height to control the chart. Test the component inside your actual grid, sidebar and mobile breakpoints rather than in isolation.

Apache ECharts: an engine-first option

Apache ECharts documents installation with npm and an API that initializes an instance on a DOM element:

npm install echarts

ECharts is not a set of React chart components in the same way as Recharts. Decide how your project will create, update and dispose of the ECharts instance, and verify the React integration, server-side rendering behavior and event wiring you intend to use. A typical lifecycle must initialize only after a browser element exists, update when options or data change, and dispose on unmount to avoid stale instances.

import { useEffect, useRef } from 'react';
import * as echarts from 'echarts';

export default function SalesChart({ values }) {
  const ref = useRef(null);

  useEffect(() => {
    if (!ref.current) return;
    const chart = echarts.init(ref.current);
    chart.setOption({
      xAxis: { type: 'category', data: values.map(v => v.label) },
      yAxis: { type: 'value' },
      series: [{ type: 'bar', data: values.map(v => v.amount) }]
    });
    const resize = () => chart.resize();
    window.addEventListener('resize', resize);
    return () => {
      window.removeEventListener('resize', resize);
      chart.dispose();
    };
  }, [values]);

  return <div ref={ref} style={{ width: '100%', height: 360 }} aria-label="Sales by period" />;
}

For production use, follow ECharts’ current handbook for module selection, renderer configuration and accessibility features, then test the chosen React wrapper or lifecycle pattern with your framework’s client/server boundaries.

Accessibility is part of the chart, not an afterthought

SVG still needs semantics

Recharts’ SVG output can expose elements to browser inspection, but that does not automatically provide a useful experience for screen-reader or keyboard users. Give every chart a visible heading or programmatic name, explain units and time range, use sufficient contrast, and make hover-only information available another way.

Canvas needs a text equivalent

Chart.js documents that canvas pixels are not available to screen readers by themselves. Add an accessible name or fallback content, and provide a meaningful text equivalent for the underlying information. An aria-label can identify a simple chart, but it is not by itself a complete solution for a complex interactive visualization.

<figure>
  <figcaption id="orders-title">Orders by month, January through March</figcaption>
  <div role="img" aria-labelledby="orders-title">
    <Bar data={data} options={options} />
  </div>
  <table>
    <caption>Underlying order totals</caption>
    <tr><th>Month</th><th>Orders</th></tr>
    <tr><td>January</td><td>120</td></tr>
    <tr><td>February</td><td>180</td></tr>
    <tr><td>March</td><td>240</td></tr>
  </table>
</figure>

Use a table, concise summary or downloadable data when exact values matter. Check focus behavior, reduced-motion preferences, color-blind readability and localization of numbers and dates.

Data volume, interactions and bundle decisions

Choose the visualization before choosing the package: a time series, categorical comparison, distribution, map and dense exploratory view have different interaction needs. Specify zooming, tooltips, brushing, annotations, legends and export requirements up front.

  • Keep raw data normalized and transform it before rendering so React re-renders do not repeatedly perform expensive parsing.
  • Memoize stable data and options objects where your wrapper otherwise sees a new object every render.
  • Aggregate or paginate data when the visual story does not require every raw record.
  • Measure load time, memory, resize cost and interaction latency with realistic data in target browsers; no source here establishes a universal threshold.
  • Lazy-load a charting package when charts are below the fold or confined to a rarely opened route.

Common failures and fixes

“My chart is blank”

Check that the parent has non-zero width and height, that data keys match the series configuration, and that Chart.js components are registered. For ECharts, initialize only after the DOM element exists.

“The canvas is blurry or the size is wrong”

Use a dedicated parent container and configure responsive and maintainAspectRatio; avoid setting only percentage width or height on the canvas itself.

“The browser says a Chart.js scale or controller is missing”

Register every controller, element, scale and plugin required by the selected chart, or temporarily use chart.js/auto while determining the minimal registration set.

“Server rendering throws a window or document error”

Move browser-only chart initialization behind a client boundary or effect. ECharts specifically requires a real DOM element; do not initialize it during server rendering.

“Screen readers get no useful information”

Add a programmatic name and a textual summary or data table. For canvas, do not treat the pixels or an aria-label alone as the complete accessible representation.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a rendered image or PDF of a chart page rather than an in-app interactive chart, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call screenshot API and an MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the complete options and authentication details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Every plan includes the features; the Free plan provides 1,000 shots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Which path fits your project?

  1. List the chart types, interactions and export formats you actually need.
  2. Prototype the smallest representative chart in Recharts, Chart.js or ECharts.
  3. Test responsive behavior inside the production layout and validate keyboard and screen-reader access.
  4. Measure bundle impact and real-data interaction in supported browsers.
  5. Choose the API your team can maintain, then pin and periodically recheck compatible versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use more than one chart library in the same React app?

Yes, but isolate each library behind a small component boundary and standardize data, colors, loading states and accessibility text so users do not experience inconsistent charts.

Should I choose SVG or canvas solely for performance?

No. Rendering technology affects DOM exposure, styling and interaction, but the available documentation does not provide a universal performance winner. Benchmark your real workload.

Do these libraries provide server-side chart images automatically?

The documented setups focus on browser rendering. If you need a screenshot or PDF of a rendered page, use a capture service such as ScreenshotNeo after the page is available.
