RadioTime Radio in Windows Media Center was a third-party add-on that let people browse and play internet-radio stations from the living-room-friendly Media Center interface. It was covered as a new add-on in January 2009 and was aimed at the Windows Vista and Windows 7 era. RadioTime later adopted the TuneIn name, but that does not make the old Media Center integration a current TuneIn product.
Today, treat RadioTime as legacy software. There is no verified, officially maintained Windows Media Center version for modern Windows. The key distinction: RadioTime provided internet-radio discovery and playback; listening to over-the-air FM still required a compatible tuner and antenna.
What RadioTime added to Windows Media Center
RadioTime was an online radio directory and streaming service, not a radio tuner you could download. Its Windows Media Center add-on brought a browsable station guide into Media Center, with categories such as Local Radio, Talk Radio, Music Radio, World Radio, and Sports Radio. The idea was to find a station and control playback from the same onscreen interface used for other living-room media.
Contemporary descriptions mention station pages with Play and information controls, plus a My Presets area for saved stations. A free RadioTime account was associated with the preset feature; the available evidence does not establish that an account was required for basic playback. Stations and streams depended on the online service, so availability could change by station or location.

The add-on was separate from Microsoft’s built-in Media Center features. Period coverage focused on Media Center in Windows Vista and Windows 7, and noted that it appeared to work in Windows 7. That historical reporting is not proof of present-day compatibility, nor does it establish support for Windows 8, 10, 11, or unofficial Media Center replacements. Contemporary coverage of the add-on

Some RadioTime coverage also described access to local FM when the PC had compatible tuner hardware. That did not mean the add-on could receive FM on its own. Microsoft’s historical support guidance likewise says FM listening required an FM-capable tuner and antenna; not every TV tuner included FM support. Microsoft support discussion of tuner requirements

How the historical installation worked
The following is a period description, not a guaranteed installation recipe for a working modern system. Historical reports say the add-on was distributed as an .MCL file and might not appear automatically in the main Media Center menu. Some users had to launch that file manually. - Obtain the add-on from RadioTime’s original partner page or a preserved copy. The evidence available here does not verify that the original download remains active.
- Install or launch the add-on, then open Windows Media Center.
- Look under Extras or Extras Library for the RadioTime entry. If it is absent, the period procedure could require manually launching the
.MCLfile. - Browse stations by location or category, select a station, and choose Play.
- Use the information or preset controls to save favorites. Historical descriptions associate My Presets with signing in to or creating a RadioTime account.
Do not assume an archived installer is authentic or safe just because it carries the old name. Avoid running unknown binaries from arbitrary download sites. A file that launches also does not prove that the old directory, account system, or streams still work.

What happened to RadioTime?
RadioTime’s Windows Media Center add-on was covered on January 25, 2009. Around 2010–2011, the service began using the TuneIn brand in place of RadioTime. Later community-plugin documentation still used the RadioTime name while pointing to TuneIn, illustrating why older references can be confusing. TuneIn is the successor brand and service lineage, not a promise that the original RadioTime Media Center add-on is equivalent to today’s TuneIn app. TuneIn currently offers Windows desktop and web access; its current Windows offering is not presented as the old Media Center integration. Does RadioTime still work in 2026?
It is possible that an enthusiast could preserve an old Media Center system and try the add-on, but the original integration should be considered unsupported and unreliable, not a current Windows feature. The available evidence does not establish an official maintained download or current compatibility. Old clients may fail if stream addresses, codecs, redirects, HTTPS requirements, authentication, or directory services have changed. A station list loading successfully is not proof that audio will play, and an old preset feature may no longer connect to its account service.

For current Windows listening, use TuneIn’s current app or website, or go directly to a station’s own site. Neither option recreates the original Media Center interface. For a few known stations, direct station websites can avoid dependence on a legacy directory, though each broadcaster has its own player and policies.

Troubleshooting an old setup
- RadioTime icon is missing: Confirm that the add-on was installed and check the Extras area. The historical
.MCLdistribution might have required manual launch. Version incompatibility or an installer that depended on a discontinued online service are also possibilities. - The station list appears, but audio does not: The station may have changed or removed its stream, restricted it by location, or switched to a codec, security, or authentication method the old player cannot handle. A working directory page does not guarantee a playable stream.
- Presets fail to save or sync: The old account system or API may have changed. Cloud presets are distinct from any local favorites a Media Center installation might retain.
- FM radio is missing: Check that the installed tuner specifically supports FM, its driver is installed, an antenna is connected to the correct input, and the tuner has been configured through Media Center’s TV-signal setup. A TV tuner is not automatically an FM tuner.
- FM stations are silent or weak: Check the antenna connection and signal, verify the selected frequency, and update or reinstall the manufacturer’s tuner driver if appropriate. What to use instead
- TuneIn: The closest successor in brand and service lineage, with a current Windows app and web listening. It is not a drop-in Media Center plug-in or an FM receiver. TuneIn’s Windows download help
- Station websites: A practical choice if you already know which broadcasters you want. You avoid relying on an old RadioTime integration, but must use each station’s own player.
- FM hardware: For local over-the-air radio, use a compatible FM tuner with an antenna and suitable drivers. Verify FM support for the exact hardware and Windows environment before buying; a TV tuner or USB tuner does not necessarily support FM.
