QWERTY is a keyboard layout, not a specific keyboard model. Its name comes from the first six letters on the top alphabetic row: Q-W-E-R-T-Y. The arrangement began with mechanical typewriters, spread through commercial adoption and typing education, and remains the default for most English-language computers, laptops, phones, and external keyboards.
QWERTY is familiar and widely compatible, but it is not automatically the fastest or most ergonomic choice for every person. Comfort also depends on the keyboard’s shape, height, key mechanism, size, angle, software settings, and your working habits.
What does QWERTY mean?
The word “QWERTY” is simply the sequence of the first six alphabetic keys on the upper row. A simplified illustration looks like this:

The indentation is illustrative; manufacturers vary the key staggering, modifiers, punctuation, number row, Enter key and Backslash key. “QWERTY” identifies the letter arrangement, not a brand, operating system, connector, switch type or keyboard size.

Layout versus physical keyboard
A layout is the mapping that determines which character appears when you press a key. A physical keyboard is the hardware: membrane, scissor-switch, mechanical, split, wireless, compact, laptop or virtual. A split ergonomic keyboard can still use QWERTY, and a mechanical keyboard can be configured for QWERTY, Dvorak or another software layout.
Where did QWERTY come from?
Christopher Latham Sholes was involved in developing early typewriters, including the Sholes and Glidden machine, which used a QWERTY-like arrangement. E. Remington and Sons helped commercialize the design, and the Remington No. 2, introduced in 1878, is commonly associated with QWERTY’s broad adoption. The layout then moved from typewriters to computer keyboards and, later, phones and touchscreens. Was QWERTY designed to cause typewriter jams?
That familiar explanation is too simple. Early typewriters had mechanical constraints, and key placement was related to typebar behavior and typing technique. But the exact reasoning behind every early rearrangement is debated. It is not historically safe to state as settled fact that QWERTY was created solely to slow typists down or prevent jams.
Commercial adoption, the spread of Remington machines, typing schools, installed equipment and user familiarity all mattered. The later success of QWERTY is therefore a mixture of engineering history and path dependence, not one proven “anti-speed” design decision. Microsoft’s historical explanation also cautions against reducing the story to a single myth.
Why is QWERTY still the standard?
QWERTY persists mainly because changing it has costs while staying with it is easy:
- Most English-language users learn it first.
- Schools, typing courses and workplace training commonly assume it.
- Replacement keyboards, laptops and printed keycaps are widely available.
- Shared computers in homes, offices, libraries and schools favor a familiar arrangement.
- Shortcuts, documentation and support instructions often assume QWERTY positions.
- Switching temporarily reduces speed and increases errors, even if the destination layout later suits you.
This is path dependence and network effect, not proof that QWERTY is objectively best for every task or every language.

Is QWERTY the fastest layout?
There is no universal, well-supported result showing that QWERTY is clearly fastest for everyone. Speed depends on practice, touch-typing skill, language, text type, device, fatigue and transition time. An alternative may reduce finger travel for some patterns, but an experienced QWERTY typist can lose substantial productivity while retraining. Claims of dramatic gains should be treated skeptically unless they come from careful comparative research.

A layout that is theoretically efficient for prose may not be convenient for programming symbols, numbers or work across several computers. QWERTY, Dvorak and Colemak

Dvorak was designed to place frequently used letters in more accessible positions. It is built into major operating systems, but changing the setting is easier than learning it. Apple documents Dvorak as an available Mac input source for users seeking a different movement pattern: Apple’s guide.
Colemak was designed later and preserves more of QWERTY’s structure than Dvorak. It can be attractive to users who want a different alphabetic arrangement without moving every familiar key, but built-in support and installation methods vary by operating system.
Test either layout in software before buying special keycaps or hardware. You can touch-type on an ordinary QWERTY-labeled keyboard, relabel keys, or use interchangeable keycaps; a new keyboard is not required.

Is QWERTY ergonomic?
QWERTY itself is neither an ergonomic product nor a medical cause of injury. Separate these variables:

- Letter arrangement: QWERTY, Dvorak, Colemak and others.
- Geometry: flat, curved, split, tented or angled.
- Profile: low-profile, standard-height or sculpted.
- Size: full-size, tenkeyless, 75%, 65%, 60% or compact.
- Mechanism: membrane, scissor, mechanical, optical or capacitive.
- Positioning: height, distance, tilt, mouse location and wrist posture.
A split or tented QWERTY keyboard, lower height, lighter key force or a closer mouse may address discomfort more directly than changing letter positions. OSHA warns that steep keyboard angles and extended rear feet can increase upward wrist bending; see its keyboard workstation guidance. Persistent pain, numbness or weakness deserves qualified ergonomic or medical advice. No layout should be promised to prevent or cure an injury.
Regional QWERTY variants
“QWERTY” alone does not specify every key. US and UK QWERTY keyboards differ in punctuation, quotation marks, the Backslash key, Enter shape and modifier placement. International layouts add dead keys or alternate character behavior. QWERTZ is associated especially with German-speaking regions, while AZERTY is associated especially with French-language computing. These are language and regional arrangements, not universally superior replacements for English QWERTY.
A keyboard can be physically labeled US while the operating system uses UK, International or another mapping. The result is often “wrong” symbols even though the hardware works correctly.

Changing layouts in Windows
Windows 11 and Windows 10: add a layout
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the ellipsis beside the relevant language.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the layout you need.
If it is not listed, Microsoft says it may need to be added under a different language entry; a complete language pack is not always required. See Microsoft’s current instructions.
Switch or remove a layout
Use the taskbar input-language icon or press Windows key + Spacebar to cycle through installed layouts. If nothing happens, only one layout may be installed. This changes keyboard input, not the Windows display language.
To remove one, go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region, open the language’s ellipsis menu, choose Language options, then select the layout’s ellipsis under Keyboards and choose Remove. If Remove is unavailable, add another layout for that language first. For accented characters, Microsoft documents the US-International layout.

Changing layouts on macOS, iPhone and iPad
On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, open the input-source controls, add the desired source, and switch from the Input menu. Keyboard Viewer shows the active mapping. Menu wording can vary by macOS release and region; Apple’s guides cover Dvorak and input-source management.
On iPhone and iPad, keyboard options depend on the iOS or iPadOS release, language and whether you are configuring the onscreen or an external keyboard. Apple’s current documentation is at iPhone keyboard settings. Changing software mapping does not change the legends printed on a physical keyboard.

- Office and home: choose the correct regional layout, comfortable spacing, acceptable noise and the right connection. Select full-size if you enter numbers frequently; tenkeyless or smaller if desk space matters.
- Long typing sessions: prioritize neutral wrist position, moderate force, suitable height and the ability to position the mouse close to your body. Split or tented designs may help some users, but fit is individual.
- Programming: check access to brackets, braces, backslash, pipe, quotes and function-row shortcuts. A standard US QWERTY layout may be easier across multiple machines.
- Gaming: focus on reliable actuation, rollover or anti-ghosting, connection stability, remapping and noise. QWERTY versus another alphabetic layout is usually less important.
- Multilingual work: verify dead keys, accents, switching shortcuts, login-screen behavior and whether legends match the active software layout.
- Accessibility: tactile bumps on F and J help locate the home position without looking. Keyboard shape, force, key spacing and alternative input methods may matter more than the alphabetic layout.
Commercial examples illustrate the range rather than a universal winner: Logitech’s Wave Keys keeps familiar QWERTY in a curved wireless form; Microsoft’s Ergonomic Keyboard is a split-style, Windows-oriented option; Keychron’s Q-series targets programmable mechanical users; and Apple’s Magic Keyboard targets Mac users who prefer a low-profile design. Check current regional availability, exact layout, return policy and features before buying.
Common QWERTY problems and fixes
“My keyboard types the wrong symbols”
Check the active input indicator first and switch back with the taskbar menu or Windows + Spacebar. Other causes include an accidentally added language, US hardware paired with UK software, an International layout, remote-desktop or virtual-machine mapping, or firmware remapping on a programmable keyboard.
Keycaps do not match output
The physical legends and software mapping disagree. Replacing keycaps does not correct software mapping; changing software mapping does not alter printed legends.
Laptop and external keyboard differ
Verify the legends and operating-system layout for each keyboard, then check the language indicator and any manufacturer remapping utility. A laptop can use one regional arrangement while an external keyboard uses another.

Compact keyboard is missing keys
QWERTY does not define size. Full-size, tenkeyless, 75%, 65% and 60% keyboards can all use QWERTY. Smaller boards may put navigation, function or number-pad commands on layers.
Mechanical versus membrane confusion
Mechanical and membrane describe how a key registers, not where letters are placed. Either can be QWERTY or configured for another layout.
When should you change from QWERTY?
Switching is most reasonable when you type for many hours, are willing to retrain consistently, control most of the computers you use, and have a specific reason such as a language requirement or dissatisfaction with finger travel. It is less practical if you constantly use shared computers, rely on printed legends, need immediate productivity, or move between unmodifiable systems.

If discomfort is the problem, change keyboard height, angle, distance, geometry, key force and work habits before assuming the letter layout is responsible. If you are curious about Dvorak or Colemak, install it in software, keep QWERTY available, and test it on the text you actually type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Dvorak or Colemak without buying a new keyboard?
Yes. Install the layout in your operating system and switch to it in software. The keycaps may still show QWERTY, so touch typing, labels or interchangeable keycaps can help.
Does changing keyboard layout change the display language?
No. Keyboard layout controls character input; it does not automatically change the operating system’s display language.
Why do F and J have raised bumps?
The tactile marks help a typist find the home-row position without looking.
The Bottom Line
Keep QWERTY if it is comfortable and productive. If typing hurts, address keyboard geometry, height, force and posture first; if you need another language or want to experiment, change the software layout before buying specialized hardware. QWERTY’s dominance reflects history, compatibility and switching costs—not a universal guarantee of speed or ergonomics.
