QuillBot vs. Sudowrite: Paraphrasing, Plagiarism Checking, and Fiction Writing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QuillBot is the better fit for paraphrasing, general editing, citations, and built-in plagiarism checking. Sudowrite is the better fit for fiction brainstorming, drafting, and narrative revision. They overlap in rewriting, but they are not direct substitutes: QuillBot is a general writing toolkit, while Sudowrite is a creative-writing workspace. Neither one can guarantee that work is original, properly cited, or allowed by a school or publisher.

For the current QuillBot plan comparison, see QuillBot’s free-versus-Premium guide. Sudowrite’s pricing page and credit guide explain its feature and usage model.

What QuillBot is designed to do

QuillBot brings several general-purpose writing tools together: a paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator, translator, AI detector, and plagiarism checker. That makes it the more relevant option when you already have text and want help revising or checking it, rather than building a fictional world or drafting a novel.

Its free account has limits. QuillBot’s help documentation lists paraphrasing up to 125 words at a time in Standard and Fluency modes, and summarizing up to 1,200 words. Premium expands those limits; the same guide lists unlimited paraphrasing, nine predefined modes plus custom modes, and summarizing up to 6,000 words. Features and limits can change, so check the current plan comparison before subscribing.

For document workflows, QuillBot says its Word add-in is free to install, but full capabilities require Premium. See QuillBot’s Word add-in guidance.

What Sudowrite is designed to do

Sudowrite is an AI writing partner aimed primarily at fiction authors. Its workflow includes brainstorming, outlining, character development, scene and chapter drafting, and revision. Its Rewrite tool can apply creative directions such as making a passage shorter or more descriptive, using “Show, Not Tell,” or increasing intensity or inner conflict. It also accepts custom instructions.

Sudowrite documents a Rewrite selection limit of up to 6,000 words. Its documentation is not fully consistent about whether short rewrites use the project’s Story Bible synopsis, so do not assume every Rewrite request reliably draws on the whole story. Consult the current Rewrite documentation and review the output for continuity.

Sudowrite also supports custom plugins for writing, editing, and analysis. They extend the workflow but do not eliminate the need to check generated material. See the plugin documentation.

Which tool is better for paraphrasing?

For meaning-preserving rewrites, choose QuillBot

QuillBot is the clearer product fit for revising existing prose, testing alternative wording, adjusting tone or formality, and editing short passages. Its paraphrasing modes are designed for this kind of general rewriting. That is a feature-fit recommendation, not a claim that a controlled head-to-head test has proved its output is more accurate.

For creative transformations, choose Sudowrite

Sudowrite’s Rewrite controls are more relevant when the aim is to change how a fictional passage reads—for example, adding description or tension—rather than simply expressing the same idea in different words. That flexibility can also introduce new details, emotional cues, or assumptions. Treat the result as a draft, not an automatic replacement.

Check every rewrite against its source

Either tool can change the intended meaning. Watch for altered negation, certainty, technical terms, causal links, pronoun references, and distinctions that matter in scientific or legal writing. In source-based work, verify that a rewritten claim still says what the cited source says.

Which tool checks plagiarism?

QuillBot has a dedicated plagiarism checker; Sudowrite does not present itself as an equivalent checking service. QuillBot’s Premium checker allowance is 25,000 words per month, and its help documentation describes similarity reports, highlighted matches, and citation assistance in APA, Chicago, and MLA. The checker is a Premium feature according to QuillBot’s checker plan guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the monthly allowance, QuillBot lists additional word packs: 6,250 words for $2.45, 25,000 for $8.95, and 62,500 for $19.95. These are prices shown in QuillBot’s help materials and may change. The same word-pack guide notes that subscribers who purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play may not be able to buy more credits through the app or website.

Sudowrite’s pricing page directs users to verify generated writing with plagiarism checkers. Its explanation that its model generates text incrementally is a vendor statement, not an independent originality assessment. The absence of a matching checker means Sudowrite should not be bought as a replacement for QuillBot’s checker or an institution’s similarity system.

A similarity score is not a verdict on integrity

A checker compares a document with sources it can access. Results can reflect common phrases, quotations, templates, or properly cited passages; they can also miss material outside the checker’s indexed sources. A low score does not prove that the ideas are original, citations are correct, or a submission complies with policy. A high score alone does not establish misconduct.

Does paraphrasing with QuillBot count as plagiarism?

It depends on what is being rewritten and how the result is used. Rephrasing your own draft is not automatically plagiarism. Rewording someone else’s ideas without attribution can still be plagiarism: changing the words does not change who developed the ideas. Keep citations attached to the claims they support, and check that the paraphrase has not distorted the source.

QuillBot says that paraphrasing external material still requires proper citation and that it cannot guarantee a particular result in a plagiarism checker. Its guidance is at “Is using a paraphrasing tool plagiarizing?” A checker does not make unattributed copying acceptable or prove that a piece meets an academic policy.

Which is better for academic writing?

QuillBot is the closer fit for academic editing because it combines paraphrasing, summarizing, grammar support, citation assistance, and a plagiarism checker. Those tools can help with a draft, but they do not validate the source, citation, or argument for you. Confirm each claim against the original material and follow your institution’s rules on AI-assisted editing and writing.

Sudowrite is generally a poor substitute for an academic writing toolkit: its main focus is fiction, and its current materials do not describe a comparable citation and plagiarism-checking workflow. A student writing a novel or screenplay may still find Sudowrite useful; “Student” in a plan name does not make it academic-integrity software.

Which is better for fiction?

Sudowrite is the more purpose-built choice for developing plots, characters, scenes, and long-form creative work. Its workspace and creative rewrite options are aimed at the decisions fiction writers make across a story. QuillBot can still help with grammar, clarity, or sentence-level alternatives, but it is not presented as a persistent story-development environment.

Some writers may use Sudowrite while drafting and QuillBot for a later language-editing pass. That can add cost and successive rewrites may flatten a distinctive voice or change meaning. Read the manuscript as a whole after each tool-assisted pass, and use a separate plagiarism checker if originality verification is needed.

How much do QuillBot and Sudowrite cost?

The prices below are the amounts listed in the cited materials as of August 2026. They are not guaranteed universal prices: offers can vary by geography, billing cycle, account eligibility, or promotion. Confirm the checkout price before paying.

Plan or allowance QuillBot Sudowrite
Entry annual plan Premium listed at $8.33 per month, billed annually ($99.95 per year) on the cited upgrade page Hobby & Student listed at $10 per month when billed annually
Entry monthly plan Premium listed at $23.95 per month on the cited upgrade page Hobby & Student listed at $19 per month
Other paid tiers Quarterly Premium listed at $39.95 every three months ($13.31 per month as displayed) Professional: $22 per month annually or $29 monthly; Max: $44 per month annually or $59 monthly
Usage included Premium includes unlimited paraphrasing and a 25,000-word monthly plagiarism-checking allowance Annual credit allowances listed as 225,000, 1,000,000, and 2,000,000 rollover credits by tier; credits are not a fixed word count

QuillBot’s cited upgrade page is the basis for the listed Premium prices. Search-visible QuillBot pages can show other offers; do not assume the figures apply to every visitor. Sudowrite’s plan guide says plans include the feature set, with tiers differing mainly by credit volume and rollover rules. Because credit use depends on feature, input, output, and model, a monthly fee cannot be translated reliably into a fixed number of pages or words.

Which one should you choose?

  • Student or researcher: QuillBot is the closer fit for paraphrasing and language cleanup, but use its checker as one signal—not as proof of compliance—and follow your institution’s AI policy.
  • Blogger or professional: QuillBot is more relevant for revising existing articles, reports, emails, and other general prose.
  • Novelist or screenwriter: Sudowrite is more relevant for brainstorming, plot and character work, scene drafting, and creative revision.
  • Writer who needs both: Sudowrite can support fiction creation and QuillBot can assist with later editing, but neither validates the other’s output. A separate similarity check may still be appropriate.
  • Buyer focused on originality checking: Choose a dedicated checker for that job; Sudowrite is not a substitute, and no score can guarantee originality or policy compliance.

What neither tool can guarantee

  • Accurate meaning: Compare a paraphrase with the original and its source, especially when wording carries technical, legal, or academic significance.
  • Correct citations: Check that references are real, formatted as required, and positioned next to the claims they support.
  • Preserved voice: Read revisions for unwanted changes to tone, emphasis, characterization, or style.
  • Acceptance under school or publisher rules: Policies may restrict generated text, paraphrasing tools, or undisclosed assistance. Check the rules that apply to your submission.
  • Definitive AI authorship evidence: QuillBot offers an AI detector, but an AI-detection result is not the same as a plagiarism match and should not be treated as proof of who wrote a passage.

For the final originality check, use the checker required by your institution or publisher when one is specified. QuillBot’s checker, an external service, and an institutional system may search different sources and produce different results.
