Short answer: The Snapdragon 870 is an older flagship-tier chip that remains capable for everyday Android use and gaming, especially in a well-cooled phone or tablet. In 2026, it makes sense mainly when the device is inexpensive and its battery, software support and network compatibility check out. Benchmark figures vary by device and version, so a score without that context can mislead.
Snapdragon 870 specifications at a glance
Qualcomm calls it the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform; “processor” is common shorthand, but the platform also includes graphics, modem, camera, display, AI and wireless components. Its model number is SM8250-AC. Introduced in 2021 as an evolution of the Snapdragon 865-era design, it is a 7 nm platform for phones and tablets—not a current-generation flagship.

The 3.2 GHz figure is the maximum clock of the prime core, not a speed the chip necessarily sustains during a long workload. A technical breakdown identifies the CPU clusters as one Cortex-A77-derived prime core, three Cortex-A77-derived performance cores and four Cortex-A55-derived efficiency cores; Qualcomm’s brief itself specifies Kryo 585 and the clock ceiling, rather than those underlying ARM labels. The prime core helps with short bursts such as opening an app, while the performance and efficiency cores divide heavier multitasking and lighter background work.

The Adreno 650 remains a strong GPU for its age. It supports Vulkan 1.1, OpenGL ES 3.2 and OpenCL 2.0 FP; Qualcomm also lists HDR gaming and support for QHD+ displays up to 144 Hz. That does not mean every game runs at a display’s maximum refresh rate. Game optimization, resolution, graphics settings, cooling, firmware and the manufacturer’s performance mode all affect results.
In ordinary Android games, the 870 is still more than adequate. It can handle many demanding titles at high settings, but newer or especially demanding games may call for lower resolution or reduced effects. It is also a strong option for emulation compared with budget chips, though compatibility and performance depend on the emulator, game, graphics driver and device. It lacks the peak performance, efficiency and newer graphics features of current flagship GPUs.
Snapdragon 870 benchmark results
Recent user-submitted aggregates put Snapdragon 870 devices at about 1,081 single-core and 2,905 multi-core in Geekbench 6, and around 1.04 million in AnTuTu 11. Treat these as indicative reference points, not a guaranteed score for every phone. NanoReview’s Snapdragon 870 database aggregates submissions from different devices and conditions.

| Test | Indicative result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | About 1,081 | User-submitted aggregate; model and conditions affect results |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | About 2,905 | User-submitted aggregate; not a controlled test of every phone |
| AnTuTu 11 | About 1,037,237 | Aggregate estimate; only compare with AnTuTu 11 results |
| AnTuTu v9 CPU results | 15,422–196,952 in Notebookcheck’s device sample; average 174,189 | Older-version figures vary widely across devices and should not be compared with v10 or v11 |
The unusually broad AnTuTu v9 range in Notebookcheck’s cross-device database illustrates why a chip does not have one universal benchmark score. Geekbench 5, 6 and 7 use different scoring systems; AnTuTu v9, v10 and v11 are likewise not interchangeable. Check the Geekbench mobile charts for version context rather than treating an older result as a current-version score.
For a fair comparison, identify the benchmark version, phone or tablet model, RAM and storage configuration, software version and performance mode. A single-run result is not the same as an average, and a CPU score says little by itself about sustained gaming, graphics, AI, temperature or battery drain. Tablets can sustain higher performance than thin phones because their larger chassis may provide more room for cooling. Longer gaming sessions can reveal thermal throttling that a short benchmark run misses.

Gaming and sustained performance
There is no defensible universal frame-rate promise for every Snapdragon 870 device. Results depend on the game version and graphics API, rendering resolution, refresh-rate settings, thermal design, battery temperature, memory and storage, and whether a vendor mode prioritizes performance. A phone may begin a session at a high frame rate and then reduce clocks as it heats up.
- Good fit: everyday gaming, many demanding Android titles with settings adjusted as needed, and emulation on compatible software.
- Check first: cooling reviews for the exact device if you play for long sessions; the same chip can behave differently in a compact phone and a tablet.
- Do not infer: game frame rates from one synthetic GPU score. Look for device-specific sustained tests that report settings, frame stability and temperature.
5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The integrated Snapdragon X55 modem supports sub-6 GHz and mmWave 5G, standalone and non-standalone modes, FDD and TDD, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing. Qualcomm lists peak theoretical rates of up to 7.5 Gbps downlink and 3 Gbps uplink. These are platform maxima under suitable conditions, not real-world speed guarantees.

Regional model, antenna and RF components, firmware, SIM configuration and carrier certification determine practical compatibility. Before buying an imported or refurbished device—particularly in the US—check the exact model number against the carrier’s current LTE and 5G band requirements. A listing that says “Snapdragon 870 5G” is not enough.
The platform’s FastConnect 6800 supports Wi-Fi 6, 2.4 and 5 GHz operation, 2×2 MIMO, MU-MIMO and WPA3, with a listed peak Wi-Fi rate up to 1.774 Gbps. Bluetooth 5.2 and aptX Voice and aptX Adaptive are also listed. The product brief does not list Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, so do not assume either from the Snapdragon 870 name.
Memory, storage and charging
The platform supports LPDDR5 up to 2750 MHz or LPDDR4X up to 2133 MHz, with listed memory capacity up to 16 GB. The phone maker chooses the actual RAM type and amount. Storage is also device-dependent: some 870 phones pair the chip with UFS 3.1, but that is not a universal SoC guarantee. For example, the POCO F4 specification page lists LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1; do not generalize that configuration to every Snapdragon 870 phone.
Rank #3
Qualcomm lists Quick Charge 4+, but manufacturers implement their own charging systems and advertised speeds vary. The POCO F4, for example, advertises 67 W charging and a 4,500 mAh battery. Those are POCO F4 device specifications, not properties every Snapdragon 870 product shares. Battery life likewise depends on display, modem use, software, capacity and—especially on an older used device—battery health.
Camera, video, display and AI capabilities
The Spectra 480 ISP supports dual 14-bit ISPs, up to 2 gigapixels per second, photo capture up to 200 MP, 8K video at 30 fps, 4K at 120 fps and 720p slow motion at 960 fps. Qualcomm also lists 4K HDR, HEIF and HEVC capture support, plus HDR10+, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision video features. These are platform ceilings: the phone’s sensor, lenses, stabilization, camera software and recording app determine which options are actually available and how good the results look. A 200 MP maximum does not mean a 200 MP sensor is fitted, and a manufacturer may omit 8K or 4K/120 recording.
Display support includes on-device 4K at up to 60 Hz, QHD+ at up to 144 Hz and external output up to 4K at 60 Hz, along with 10-bit color, Rec. 2020 and HDR formats. The handset or tablet maker selects the panel, refresh rate, certification and external-display implementation. Hardware H.265 and VP9 decoding is also listed.
For AI, Qualcomm lists the Hexagon 698 processor, Tensor Accelerator, Vector Extensions, Scalar Accelerator and Sensing Hub. The POCO F4 product page attributes a 15 TOPS figure to Qualcomm, but TOPS is not a standardized real-world score and figures across generations or workloads are not directly comparable. The 870 should not be mistaken for a newer platform with current-generation on-device generative-AI features; camera and voice functions also depend heavily on the manufacturer’s software.

Most of these products are older models, so a manufacturer page or old listing should not be read as proof of current stock. Confirm the exact variant, condition, warranty and return policy with the seller before paying.
Is a Snapdragon 870 device worth buying in 2026?
Yes, if the price is low enough and the device is in good condition. The 870 still offers responsive general use and capable gaming, and a tablet’s larger chassis may help with sustained workloads. It can be a sensible bargain or secondary device when the buyer values performance over the latest features.
Be more cautious if it will be your main phone. The SoC’s age means the remaining security-update period depends on the particular manufacturer and model. Battery wear, repair availability and aging cameras can matter more than a benchmark. A newer mid-range device may offer better efficiency, longer support, newer connectivity or more capable camera and AI software, even if the 870 remains fast in raw tasks.
Before buying, check these in order:
- Exact model and regional variant, then carrier LTE/5G bands and certification.
- Battery health, replacement cost and whether replacement parts are available.
- Current Android and security-patch status, plus the maker’s update policy for that model.
- Cooling design if you intend to game for long sessions.
- Actual RAM type, storage capacity and speed, display condition and refresh rate.
- Camera needs and whether the device’s camera app supports the recording modes you want.
- Seller reputation, refurbishment grade, warranty, return window and total cost after shipping or import fees.
Compare the final price with newer refurbished phones rather than assuming an 870 device is a bargain because of its former flagship position. For example, Google’s US refurbished-device page has listed newer Pixel models at different prices; they are not direct performance substitutes, but may be a better fit for buyers prioritizing camera processing, official support and warranty confidence. Prices and availability change, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old price signal.
