Qualcomm announced Quick Charge 5 on July 26, 2020, as a smartphone charging platform capable of supporting more than 100W. That was a platform capability, not a promise that every compatible phone—or every charger labelled “100W”—would charge a phone at that rate. The result depends on the phone, adapter, cable, battery design, software and temperature. Qualcomm has since introduced Quick Charge 5+; Quick Charge 5 is the 2020 announcement explained here.
What Qualcomm announced in 2020
Qualcomm described Quick Charge 5 as its first commercially viable smartphone charging platform supporting more than 100W, and said compatible devices could charge a 4,500mAh battery from 0% to 50% in five minutes. The company also claimed up to 70% greater efficiency and operation up to 10°C cooler than Quick Charge 4 under its comparison methodology. Those are Qualcomm claims, not guarantees for every retail phone. Qualcomm’s announcement said commercial devices were expected in Q3 2020.
The platform used Qualcomm SMB1396 and SMB1398 power-management integrated circuits (PMICs). Qualcomm initially named Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 865 Plus and future premium and high-tier Snapdragon platforms as supported platforms. Chip support alone did not ensure that a phone maker implemented or enabled Quick Charge 5.
How USB Power Delivery and PPS fit in
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a power-negotiation standard used over USB-C. Programmable Power Supply (PPS) is an optional USB PD mode that allows a device to request changing voltage and current values instead of relying only on fixed voltage steps. That finer adjustment can help a phone manage power conversion and heat. USB-IF describes the standard and PPS in its USB Charger and USB PD overview and its Certified USB Fast Charger announcement.

In a typical USB PD-PPS charging exchange, the charger reports the power profiles it can provide, the phone selects a supported profile and requests a level, and the charger supplies the negotiated power. The phone can adjust its request as charging conditions change. If the phone, charger or cable cannot support a requested mode, the system may use a lower compatible level instead.
- USB-C is the connector and cable interface; it does not, by itself, specify charging speed.
- USB PD-PPS is a standards-based way to negotiate adjustable power.
- Quick Charge 5 is Qualcomm’s branded platform and certification ecosystem, built to use USB PD and PPS while also involving Qualcomm’s device integration and system features.
Qualcomm said Quick Charge 5 was backward compatible with Quick Charge 2.0, 3.0, 4 and 4+, but compatibility with an older charger does not give that charger Quick Charge 5 performance. Likewise, USB PD or PPS support alone does not guarantee the full Qualcomm profile.

What “100W-plus” means inside a phone
Qualcomm specified support for 2S batteries as well as 1SnP and 2SnP configurations through the SMB1396 and SMB1398. A 2S design has two cells arranged in series, allowing a higher overall battery voltage than a single-cell arrangement. Ars Technica’s technical analysis of the demonstration described power being divided across cells, illustrating why a 100W-class adapter rating should not be read as the power entering one conventional cell.
The charger’s rated output, the power negotiated at the USB-C input, the power handled by the phone’s charging circuitry and the energy ultimately stored in the battery are different quantities. Conversion losses and thermal controls intervene, and the phone’s internal design determines the voltage and current each cell receives.

What Qualcomm said about protection and heat
Qualcomm listed 12 voltage, current and temperature protections, USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V, and external power controls beyond 30V. It also cited Battery Saver, Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities, adaptive input voltage, INOV4, and Dual Charge and Triple Charge technologies. Qualcomm specified PMIC efficiency above 98% for the SMB1396 and SMB1398. These are platform specifications and company claims, not evidence that every phone has identical thermal behavior or battery life.
Fast charging does not remove the ordinary factors that affect battery aging: heat, cell chemistry and design, charging habits, software limits, and time spent at a high state of charge. A phone can reduce charging power when it gets hot or approaches full, so the highest rate is not necessarily sustained throughout a session.

What to check before choosing a charger
- Check the phone specification. Confirm support for Quick Charge 5 or the USB PD/PPS modes the phone accepts. Do not infer it from the Snapdragon processor alone.
- Check the charger’s actual profiles. “USB-C PD” does not necessarily mean PPS. Look for the published PPS voltage and current range and the output for the specific port you plan to use.
- Match the cable to the power level. Use a cable rated for the negotiated current; 5A operation requires an appropriately rated cable with the relevant e-marker requirements. A low-rated or damaged cable may limit charging or cause fallback.
- Account for port sharing. A multi-port charger’s headline wattage may be its combined output. Connecting another device can reduce the power available at the phone’s port.
- Consider certification and the phone maker’s requirements. Qualcomm certification is relevant when seeking branded Quick Charge 5 performance; USB-IF certification is a separate standards-compliance signal. Some phones rely on a manufacturer-specific adapter or cable for their fastest mode.
USB-IF says USB PD systems before PD 3.1 were limited to 100W using a 20V/5A solution over an appropriately rated USB-C cable; PD 3.1 later expanded the specification to 240W. That broader USB PD capability does not mean an individual phone can accept those levels. See the USB-IF overview.
How different charger combinations are likely to behave
| Setup | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Quick Charge 5 phone, Quick Charge 5-certified adapter and suitable cable | Potential for the phone’s Quick Charge 5 capability, subject to its own battery, software and thermal limits. |
| Quick Charge 5 phone and USB PD-PPS adapter | May provide high-speed charging if the adapter’s PPS range matches what the phone accepts; full Quick Charge 5 performance is not assured. |
| Quick Charge 5 phone and fixed-profile USB PD adapter without PPS | May use a compatible fixed profile, typically with less flexibility and potentially lower speed. |
| Quick Charge 5 phone and older Quick Charge adapter | Backward-compatible charging may work, but not at Quick Charge 5 rates. |
| Non-Qualcomm phone and USB PD-PPS adapter | Can charge through compatible USB PD/PPS profiles if the phone supports them; Qualcomm branding does not confer speed. |
| USB-C phone without USB PD/PPS support | May charge at a lower negotiated rate or through another protocol supported by that phone. |
These are device-dependent outcomes. A charger marked “100W” describes a possible charger output under specified conditions, not a command to deliver 100W to every connected device.
How to interpret the five-minute claim
Qualcomm’s 0–50% claim concerned a 4,500mAh fast-charge battery. Its footnote described a 1.5C charge rate and a maximum-power thermal limit of 40°C for its charging implementations. It was not a claim that all phones charge from empty to half full in five minutes, nor that a full charge takes ten minutes. Charging commonly slows as the battery approaches full, and capacity, cell arrangement, software, charger, cable and ambient temperature all affect the result.

Quick Charge 5 remains the name of Qualcomm’s 2020 platform announcement; it should not be mistaken for the company’s latest branding. Qualcomm introduced Quick Charge 5+ in September 2025 as a later evolution. Its current Quick Charge product page and 2025 announcement describe that newer platform. Qualcomm continues to associate 100W-plus charging and the five-minute half-charge claim with the Quick Charge 5 family, but those claims remain conditional on the particular phone and charging setup.
What Quick Charge 5 changed
Quick Charge 5 paired Qualcomm’s high-power phone charging platform with USB PD-PPS negotiation, rather than relying solely on Qualcomm’s earlier proprietary charging negotiation. That made standards-based USB-C interoperability part of the proposition while leaving peak performance dependent on coordinated support across phone, adapter, cable, battery and software. For a buyer, matching those supported profiles matters more than selecting a charger by its largest wattage number alone.
