Krait 300 and Krait 400 are CPU designs; Snapdragon 800 is a complete system-on-chip (SoC) family built around four Krait 400 cores. For a like-for-like platform comparison, look at Snapdragon 600 with Krait 300 versus Snapdragon 800 with Krait 400.

What the names mean

Qualcomm’s Krait was a custom CPU microarchitecture that implemented the 32-bit ARMv7 instruction set. It was not an ARM Cortex-branded core. Qualcomm introduced Krait for its Snapdragon S4 generation as an in-house alternative to reference CPU designs. Qualcomm’s 2011 Krait announcement describes that launch.

  • Krait 300: a CPU-core design used principally in Snapdragon 600.
  • Krait 400: a later, higher-frequency evolution used in Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801.
  • Snapdragon 800: a family of SoCs combining CPU cores with graphics, memory and multimedia hardware, plus connectivity and peripheral features that vary by part.

Comparing Krait 400 directly with Snapdragon 800 is like comparing an engine design with a complete vehicle. The core matters, but the GPU, memory subsystem, modem, cooling and software also shape performance.

What changed from Krait 300 to Krait 400?

Higher clock targets, not a wholesale redesign

Qualcomm specified Snapdragon 600 with Krait 300 at up to 1.9 GHz per core and Snapdragon 800 with Krait 400 at up to 2.3 GHz. Krait 400 was an evolutionary design, tuned for higher-frequency operation, rather than a completely unrelated CPU architecture. AnandTech’s technical coverage of Krait 400 and Krait 300 describes improved L2 access latency alongside that higher-frequency focus.

The clock figures are maxima, not universal operating speeds. A phone’s configured clock, workload, firmware and thermal limits affect how quickly it completes a task. The clock-rate difference alone does not establish an equal-sized performance gain in every application.

A different 28 nm process variant

Snapdragon 600 used 28 nm LP, while Snapdragon 800 used TSMC’s 28 nm HPm process. Qualcomm and TSMC described the 800 as the first production processor using that process in their 28HPM announcement. The process supported the 800’s higher frequency targets, but it does not mean every Snapdragon 800 phone necessarily uses less power: higher clocks and sustained workloads can raise consumption.

Cache behavior and the rest of the platform

Krait 400’s CPU changes were only one part of the move to Snapdragon 800. The platform also paired it with Adreno 330 graphics, a Hexagon QDSP6 V5 DSP and a faster memory configuration. Differences in video, display and connectivity support also depended on the specific 800 part. Those platform changes help explain why a Snapdragon 800 phone could outperform a Snapdragon 600 phone beyond what the CPU-core name alone suggests.

Why Snapdragon 800 was stronger for graphics and media

Adreno 330 versus Adreno 320

Snapdragon 600 paired Krait 300 with Adreno 320; Snapdragon 800 paired Krait 400 with Adreno 330. Qualcomm claimed Adreno 330 could deliver more than twice Adreno 320’s compute performance in relevant workloads in its announcement of its next-generation premium processors. Treat that as a vendor claim about specified workloads, not a guarantee that every game runs twice as fast. Resolution, game engine, drivers, cooling and sustained thermal behavior all affect frame rates.

Snapdragon 600 versus Snapdragon 800 in use

CPU performance

The usual expectation is that a Snapdragon 800 phone running Krait 400 at roughly 2.2–2.3 GHz will be faster than a Snapdragon 600 phone running Krait 300 at roughly 1.7–1.9 GHz. How large the difference feels depends on the task and the device. App launch time, single-threaded work and sustained multi-core work do not necessarily scale alike.

Benchmark scores from different phones are not interchangeable. OEMs can set different clock limits and thermal policies, and results change with firmware, operating-system version and test version. AnandTech’s Snapdragon 800 performance preview and Nexus 5 review discuss performance and throttling in particular devices; their results should not be treated as universal ratings for every Snapdragon 800 phone.

Memory and connectivity

The Snapdragon 800 product brief specifies dual-channel 32-bit LPDDR3 at 800 MHz and up to 12.8 GB/s of bandwidth. Qualcomm’s 600 brief lists LPDDR3, but memory implementation varies by device. A modem or interface feature should not be inferred from the family label alone: the Snapdragon 800 family included MSM and APQ parts with different integration, while LTE bands and support also depended on the model and market.

Qualcomm listed LTE Advanced/Category 4 LTE, 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0 among Snapdragon 800 options, with some available only on selected processors. The 600 brief lists USB 2.0. Check the exact phone’s specifications rather than assuming every 800-branded device has every higher-end feature.

Battery life and sustained speed

Neither the lower clock of Snapdragon 600 nor the HPm process of Snapdragon 800 is enough to predict battery life. The screen, battery capacity and age, modem activity, software, background applications and workload duration all matter. During long gaming or processing sessions, a device’s cooling and thermal policy can reduce its initial peak performance.

Which phones used these chips?

Snapdragon 600 with Krait 300

Representative Snapdragon 600 devices include the HTC One, the LG Optimus G Pro and some Samsung Galaxy S4 models. The HTC One commonly used a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600 variant; Qualcomm advertised the family’s maximum CPU clock as up to 1.9 GHz. Qualcomm named the Galaxy S4, HTC One and LG Optimus G among Snapdragon 600 devices in its Snapdragon 600 device announcement.

Snapdragon 800 with Krait 400

Representative Snapdragon 800 phones include the LG G2, LG Nexus 5, Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and some Samsung Galaxy Note 3 variants. Snapdragon 800 parts also appeared in tablets and other products. A phone name alone may not identify the exact chip or configuration.

Check the Galaxy S4 model, not just its name

The Galaxy S4 is a notable regional exception: some versions used Snapdragon 600 with Krait 300, while others used Samsung’s Exynos platform. The same retail name therefore does not guarantee the same processor. A contemporary comparison of the Nexus 5, Xperia Z1, Galaxy S4, HTC One and LG G2 illustrates why the specific model matters. For any device comparison, verify the exact model number and SoC.

How to identify a device’s processor

  1. Find the full model number. Check the phone’s settings, its regulatory label or the manufacturer’s specifications; the retail name may cover multiple regional versions.
  2. Look up the model-specific chipset. Confirm the SoC designation, such as MSM8974, rather than relying on a listing that only says “Snapdragon 800.”
  3. Check the listed CPU and GPU. Krait 300 commonly indicates a Snapdragon 600-era configuration; Krait 400 appears in Snapdragon 800 and 801. Confirm which SoC family the device actually uses.
  4. Verify optional features separately. Check the exact phone specification for LTE bands, Wi-Fi, USB and video functions; platform maximums do not guarantee device support.

How to read old benchmark results

  • Separate peak from sustained results. A short run can show a burst clock that the phone cannot maintain under a longer load.
  • Compare like with like. Benchmark version, operating-system version, display resolution and performance profile can change results.
  • Account for graphics conditions. GPU comparisons are affected by resolution, drivers, game engine and thermal throttling.
  • Use device-specific evidence. A 2.26 GHz Nexus 5 and a similarly clocked LG G2 can behave differently because manufacturers tune cooling and firmware differently.

What these chips mean for a phone in 2026

Snapdragon 600 and 800 are 2013-era, 32-bit platforms, so their original flagship or upper-tier status is historical rather than a current performance recommendation. For an old phone, check its specific operating-system and app compatibility, security-update status, battery condition and storage before judging whether it remains useful. Those factors vary by device and cannot be inferred from Krait or Snapdragon branding.

Bottom line

Krait 300 and Krait 400 are related Qualcomm CPU designs, with Krait 400 tuned for higher clocks and used in the more capable Snapdragon 800 platform. Snapdragon 800 also brought Adreno 330 and broader memory, multimedia and connectivity options. For a real phone comparison, identify the exact model and SoC, then consider sustained performance and device-specific features rather than relying on a family name or maximum specification.
