Quick answer: PUP.Optional.BlazerBrowser is Malwarebytes’ detection name for a potentially unwanted, Chromium-based browser. Malwarebytes says it may be installed through misleading download buttons or bundled software. It is not automatically proof of a virus or credential-stealing malware, but if you did not deliberately install it, quarantine it and remove the associated browser or installer.
What is PUP.Optional.BlazerBrowser?
PUP.Optional.BlazerBrowser is a Malwarebytes detection for a Chromium-based browser that may reach a Windows PC through a deceptive or poorly disclosed installation process. Chromium is the open-source browser engine used by many legitimate browsers, so the fact that BlazerBrowser is Chromium-based does not make every Chromium browser unsafe.
The important part of the alert is PUP, meaning “potentially unwanted program.” Malwarebytes uses this category for software that may be bundled, misleadingly distributed, aggressively advertised, installed without clear consent, or otherwise unwanted. A PUP alert is different from a confirmed virus, trojan, ransomware infection, or credential stealer.

Why did Malwarebytes detect it?
The documented scenario involves a misleading download experience. A download page may show several similar buttons, place advertisements beside the legitimate link, bundle an additional browser with another installer, or preselect an optional offer during setup.
This does not establish that every BlazerBrowser installation came from one particular website or installer. It does explain why a user may see the alert after downloading an unrelated free application.
Possible clues include:
- A new browser shortcut or Start-menu entry.
- An unfamiliar browser in Windows’ installed-app list.
- An unfamiliar browser process or installation folder.
- A Malwarebytes alert immediately after downloading freeware.
- The same alert returning whenever an installer is downloaded again.
These are troubleshooting clues, not guaranteed symptoms. The available vendor description does not establish that every installation hijacks searches, changes the homepage, injects advertisements, steals passwords, records keystrokes, or uses persistence mechanisms.

Not based on this detection alone. Malwarebytes classifies it as a PUP rather than identifying it on the detection page as a conventional virus or trojan.
That does not mean it should automatically be trusted. Software can be unwanted because it arrived deceptively, bundled itself with another download, displayed aggressive advertising, or made its installation choices unclear. If you did not knowingly choose BlazerBrowser, removal is the safest default.

A single PUP alert also does not prove that your passwords were stolen or that your entire computer is compromised. If you are seeing suspicious account logins, ransomware activity, disabled security software, unknown remote-access tools, or additional malware detections, investigate those issues separately and consider broader incident-response steps.
How to remove PUP.Optional.BlazerBrowser
1. Update Malwarebytes if prompted
Open Malwarebytes for Windows and install any available program or protection-database update. Labels can vary between editions and versions.
2. Run a Threat Scan
- Open Malwarebytes.
- Start a Threat Scan.
- Review the detected items when the scan finishes.
- Select Quarantine for the BlazerBrowser detection and other items you recognize as unwanted.
- Restart Windows if Malwarebytes requests it.
This follows Malwarebytes’ general PUP-removal guidance. If Malwarebytes detected only an installer, the browser may never have completed installation; quarantining that installer may be all that is required.
3. Uninstall the browser from Windows
If BlazerBrowser or another unfamiliar browser is installed, remove it through Windows:
- Windows 11: Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Search for BlazerBrowser or an unfamiliar recently installed browser, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Windows 10: Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select the unfamiliar browser, and choose Uninstall.
- If it is not listed, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
Do not uninstall Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, or another legitimate browser merely because it uses Chromium. Confirm the exact application name first. Windows labels may differ by version and language.

4. Remove the leftover installer
Check your Downloads folder for the installer that triggered the alert. If Malwarebytes has quarantined it, delete any remaining copy and empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate. Do not run the installer again to test it.

5. Review browser settings
As a precaution, check the browser you actually use:
- Confirm the default browser in Windows settings.
- Remove unfamiliar desktop or Start-menu shortcuts.
- Review installed extensions.
- Check the default search engine and new-tab settings.
- Look for other recently installed applications that arrived with the same download.
These checks are sensible cleanup steps, not proof that BlazerBrowser changed every setting on your PC.
6. Run a second scan
After uninstalling the browser and deleting the installer, run another Malwarebytes scan. A clean result provides better assurance that the detected files have been removed, although it cannot prove that every unrelated security problem is absent.
What if the alert keeps coming back?
- The alert returns after installing another program: Remove or reconsider that program, then obtain it from the developer’s official website or a trusted app store. Its installer may be offering bundled software.
- Only an installer is detected: Delete the copy in Downloads and avoid reopening it. The browser may not be installed.
- Windows will not uninstall the browser: Restart Windows and try again from an administrator account. If normal removal fails, scan from Windows Safe Mode using instructions appropriate to your Windows version, or seek professional assistance.
- The browser reappears: Review recently installed software, browser extensions, scheduled installation activity, and the download source. Do not repeatedly reinstall the program that introduced it.
Should you allow-list BlazerBrowser?
Usually, no. An allow-list entry suppresses protection; it is not a removal method. Do not add an exclusion just because the alert is inconvenient or because the detection is called a PUP.

Only consider allowing it if you deliberately installed it, independently trust the exact installer and source, and understand that Malwarebytes may no longer block that file or application. Malwarebytes’ documented route is Detection History → Allow List → Add, followed by choosing an exclusion type such as a file or folder.
If you are uncertain, quarantine the detection instead of allowing it.
How to avoid similar unwanted software
- Download applications from the developer’s official website or a trusted app store.
- Avoid prominent “Download” advertisements on download portals and article pages.
- Choose Custom or Advanced installation when available.
- Read each installer screen and decline optional browsers, extensions, optimizers, and search changes.
- Keep Windows and your security software updated.
- Do not bypass a Malwarebytes warning simply to finish an installation.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus remains a built-in baseline for supported Windows systems. It is not a Malwarebytes-specific remedy, and this article does not establish that it will detect this exact PUP. Buying Malwarebytes is also not necessarily required if your existing installation can scan and quarantine the detection. Paid Malwarebytes protection is an optional choice for users who want ongoing real-time security, not a prerequisite for removing this alert.

According to Malwarebytes, the detection identifies a potentially unwanted Chromium-based browser and is associated in some cases with misleading download flows. Malwarebytes lists BlazerBrowser among its Top 10 PUP detections for June 2026, but that ranking reflects detection activity and does not measure the severity or damage on an individual computer.
The available vendor information does not provide a universal publisher, file name, hash, installation path, version list, registry key, scheduled task, or detailed behavioral analysis. If your scan log contains any of those details, treat them as evidence about your specific detection—not as universal indicators for every BlazerBrowser installation.

Bottom line: If you did not intentionally install BlazerBrowser, quarantine the Malwarebytes detection, uninstall any associated browser, delete the installer, review browser settings, and scan again. Treat the alert as a warning about unwanted or deceptive software—not automatic proof of a conventional malware infection.
