NASA plans to study asteroid 16 Psyche, not mine it. The Psyche spacecraft is an orbiter carrying scientific instruments—not mining equipment, a lander, or a capsule to return samples to Earth. Its planned arrival in 2029 will let scientists investigate the asteroid’s composition and formation. The much-repeated “$10 quintillion” figure is a speculative calculation based on assumed metal quantities and Earth prices, not a NASA valuation or a realistic estimate of money anyone could earn.
What is asteroid 16 Psyche?
16 Psyche is a large asteroid in the outer main asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. It was the 16th asteroid discovered, hence the number in its name. NASA estimates its irregular, potato-like shape at roughly 280 by 232 kilometers. It is also about three times farther from the Sun than Earth. The asteroid and the spacecraft sent to investigate it are both called Psyche. The asteroid is notable because observations suggest it contains substantial metal, but it is not known to be a solid lump of iron, much less a block of gold or platinum. NASA currently estimates that metal may make up about 30% to 60% of Psyche’s volume, mixed with rock or silicate material. Close-up observations are needed to establish its surface composition, structure, and history. NASA’s profile and JPL’s science overview explain what is known and what remains uncertain.
What will NASA’s Psyche spacecraft do?
NASA launched the Psyche spacecraft on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on October 13, 2023. It is designed to orbit the asteroid and study it remotely. The mission’s measurements could help scientists determine whether Psyche is an exposed or altered remnant of an early planetary body’s metal core—or a different kind of object altogether. - Multispectral imagers will photograph and map the surface and help identify minerals.
- A gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer will help determine which elements are present.
- A magnetometer will look for evidence of an ancient magnetic field.
- Radio measurements will track how the asteroid’s gravity affects the spacecraft’s motion, helping scientists study its mass distribution and interior.
- Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) is a separate technology demonstration testing laser communications in deep space; it is not a mining instrument.
The spacecraft will not land, drill, excavate, refine metal, or return samples. Its planned investigation is orbital, with observations from a series of different orbits. When will Psyche reach the asteroid?
As of August 18, 2026, NASA’s published schedule places the spacecraft’s arrival in late July 2029, with prime science operations expected to begin in August 2029 and continue through approximately November 2031. These are planned milestones, not guarantees.

The May 2026 Mars encounter was a planned gravity assist: the planet’s gravity helped change the spacecraft’s trajectory and velocity on the route to Psyche. It was not an unexpected detour. Where does the “$10 quintillion” estimate come from?
It is a hypothetical gross-value calculation, not an amount NASA says Psyche is worth. The basic arithmetic estimates how much metal an asteroid might contain, assigns it a value using terrestrial commodity prices, and adds the results. Every step depends on assumptions: Psyche’s detailed composition has not yet been measured at close range, and a metal fraction does not tell us how much material could actually be extracted.
The Congressional Research Service describes a Psyche valuation cited in media coverage as hypothetical. The numbers in circulation also vary: some coverage says $10 quadrillion, while other headlines say $10 quintillion. Those are not interchangeable—a quintillion is 1,000 quadrillion—so a figure should be tied to the specific calculation or publication that used it, not treated as an established NASA finding. A headline value also leaves out the difference between metal being present and metal being commercially useful. It is not, by itself, a measure of recoverable resources, revenue, market value, or profit.

- Composition: the amounts and distribution of metal and rock are not yet known precisely.
- Access and processing: the headline arithmetic does not establish whether materials could be mined, separated, and refined.
- Transport and operations: equipment, energy, communications, storage, and moving material across space all present major challenges.
- Market effects: today’s commodity prices assume current supply conditions. A huge new supply could lower prices, so multiplying an assumed inventory by today’s prices does not predict what it could sell for.

Why does NASA care about a metal-rich asteroid?
The mission’s value is scientific, not a forecast of mining income. Earth and other rocky planets have metal cores beneath rocky mantles and crusts, making those interiors difficult to observe directly. If Psyche is part of an exposed or altered core, studying it could offer clues about how metal separated from rock in the early solar system, how planetary cores formed, and whether differentiated bodies developed magnetic fields.
Scientists do not know yet that Psyche is an exposed planetary core. It could be partially differentiated or have another formation history. A result that rules out the exposed-core idea would still matter: it could show that Psyche is a kind of solar-system object not previously examined up close. Could anyone mine Psyche in the future?
Asteroid-resource extraction is a long-term possibility, not an established commercial capability. Psyche would be a particularly demanding target: it is in the main asteroid belt, and a mining operation would have to transport equipment there, operate it on a small irregular body, process material, and deliver useful products somewhere they could be used or sold.
For a future space economy, using resources in space—for example, turning water into propellant—could make more sense than shipping bulk metal back to Earth. That remains a possibility, not a proven business model. Any extraction proposal would also face legal and financial questions; international law bars national appropriation of celestial bodies, while how rights in extracted resources should work remains debated.
