Neither console has a confirmed consumer price. Based on what Microsoft has officially described, Project Helix is currently more likely to launch as the more expensive base machine because it is being positioned to play both Xbox console and PC games. However, a high-end or disc-equipped PS6 could match or exceed Helix. Any $900–$1,000 PS6 figure circulating online remains unverified.
The short answer
The most defensible prediction is conditional:
- More likely to have the higher base price: Project Helix, if Microsoft delivers the PC-and-console hybrid platform it has described.
- More likely to produce the highest premium price: Unknown. Sony could price a premium or disc-equipped PS6 as high as, or higher than, Helix.
- What is confirmed: Microsoft has announced Project Helix and plans to send alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Sony has not published an equivalent PS6 specification, launch date, or price announcement in the sources reviewed.
That means there is no reliable MSRP comparison yet. The useful question is not “Will PS6 cost $1,000?” but rather “Which hardware strategy creates more upward pressure on price, and what configuration will actually be compared?”
PS6 and Project Helix are not equally confirmed
PS6 is the informal name commonly used for Sony’s next PlayStation console. Sony has not officially confirmed that name, a consumer launch date, final specifications, or a retail price in the available evidence.

Project Helix is Microsoft’s confirmed codename for its next-generation Xbox. In its official announcement, Microsoft says Helix is being developed with AMD, uses a custom AMD system-on-chip, and is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft also describes it as being built around the next generation of DirectX and FSR, with a major improvement in ray-tracing performance and capability.

Microsoft says developer alpha hardware is planned from 2027. That is a development milestone, not a confirmed retail launch year. Microsoft has not announced Helix’s consumer price, final storage capacity, disc-drive policy, final configuration, or retail availability date.

Current prices show why a high next-generation MSRP is possible
Current-generation pricing has already moved beyond the traditional $399–$499 expectation in the United States. Sony’s recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are:

These figures come from Sony’s April 2026 pricing announcement. The PS5 Pro is a premium mid-generation product, not a direct forecast for the base PS6, but its $899.99 price demonstrates that Sony is willing to sell a console substantially above earlier mainstream price points.
Microsoft has also announced substantial Xbox price increases effective August 1, 2026. It says 512GB models will increase by $100, 1TB models by $150, and the 2TB model will be discontinued. Microsoft attributed the changes partly to storage and memory costs, saying those costs had risen by more than 2.5 times and could potentially double again by fall 2027. The announcement also says consoles are typically sold below manufacturing cost.
Microsoft did not provide a complete model-by-model U.S. price table in the accessible announcement, so exact current Xbox prices should be checked on the Microsoft Store rather than reconstructed from older price lists. The company’s official price update is useful evidence of cost pressure, but it does not establish Helix’s future MSRP.
Why Project Helix could cost more
1. It is being positioned beyond a traditional console
A conventional console is built around a fixed hardware target and a tightly controlled operating environment. Microsoft says Helix is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. That broader ambition could require more capable CPU and GPU resources, additional memory, faster storage, and software support for different game types.
That does not automatically make Helix a gaming PC, and Microsoft has not confirmed support for Windows, Steam, or every PC storefront. It does mean the product’s design goals could push it closer to PC-class hardware than a conventional subsidized console.

2. Microsoft is targeting a major performance leap
Microsoft has described an order-of-magnitude improvement in ray-tracing performance and capability, alongside next-generation DirectX and FSR features. If the retail hardware approaches those ambitions, the system may need more expensive silicon and cooling than a lower-cost machine designed mainly for rasterized 4K output.
This is a pricing inference, not a confirmed bill of materials. The final cost will depend on the chip design, clock speeds, memory configuration, manufacturing process, cooling system, and production volume.
3. Memory and storage are already a visible risk
Microsoft’s current-generation price announcement specifically cites rising memory and storage costs. A PC-capable, high-performance Helix could be particularly exposed to those components. A larger SSD, faster memory, or a higher memory capacity would raise the hardware cost before Microsoft decides how much of that cost to absorb.

Console makers can sell hardware below manufacturing cost and recover revenue through game sales, subscriptions, accessories, and platform fees. Microsoft’s comments about current console economics do not prove that it will stop subsidizing Helix. But if Helix is marketed as an open-ended console-and-PC platform, Microsoft may choose to recover more of the hardware cost at purchase instead of relying on a large loss-leading strategy.
Helix could also launch in multiple tiers: an affordable model alongside a more powerful flagship. In that case, “the price of Xbox Helix” would not describe one product.
Why PS6 could still be more expensive
Sony could pursue an equally ambitious hardware design, especially if it prioritizes advanced ray tracing, higher image quality, faster storage, or a major CPU and GPU upgrade. Sony could also separate its products into digital, disc-equipped, and premium versions.
A disc-equipped PS6 would probably cost more than an otherwise equivalent digital model because of the drive hardware and licensing structure. Sony could additionally sell a premium model with more storage or higher performance. The PS5 Pro’s price shows that a premium PlayStation tier is plausible, although it does not prove that the standard PS6 will cost $900 or more.
Some secondary coverage has repeated an alleged PS6 bill-of-materials estimate of roughly $960. For example, PC Gamer describes the estimate, but it is not a Sony-confirmed figure. A bill of materials is also not the same as a retail price. It may exclude or inadequately account for assembly, packaging, shipping, retailer margins, warranty costs, marketing, software development, platform fees, taxes, regional pricing, and any hardware subsidy.

Therefore, “PS6 will cost $1,000” is not a verified statement. At most, the estimate is a warning that an expensive high-end PS6 configuration cannot be dismissed outright.
Base model versus premium model

Comparing a disc-equipped PS6 with a digital Helix, or a premium Helix with a base PS6, would create a misleading result. The models must be matched by performance, storage, drive, included controller, and bundled games.
Rumors and confidence levels
A practical way to read the current information is to divide it into four categories:
- Confirmed: Project Helix exists; Microsoft is developing it with AMD; it is intended to play Xbox console and PC games; Microsoft is targeting next-generation DirectX and FSR features; developer alpha hardware is planned from 2027; Sony and Microsoft have both raised current-generation price signals in 2026.
- Strong inference: Helix faces upward price pressure if its PC-oriented hardware ambitions are genuine and Microsoft passes more of those costs to buyers.
- Unverified: PS6 bill-of-materials estimates, $1,000 launch-price claims, launch dates, final specifications, and reports of a disc-less Helix.
- Unknown: Which company will set the higher MSRP, whether either company will subsidize the hardware heavily, and how many launch configurations each platform will offer.
Microsoft’s statement that it intends to preserve compatibility with games from four Xbox generations is valuable for existing Xbox owners, but it does not mean every title, peripheral, or region will necessarily work identically. Compatibility can vary by game, licensing, and technical requirements.
Launch timing will affect the answer
Developer alpha hardware beginning in 2027 does not establish a 2027 consumer launch. Development hardware can precede retail availability by a substantial period. There is also no verified PS6 launch year in the available evidence, so 2027, 2028, or 2029 should not be presented as confirmed dates.
The eventual launch window matters because memory and SSD prices, AMD manufacturing costs, exchange rates, tariffs, production capacity, and component availability can all change. A delay could allow cheaper components, but it could also lead to redesigned hardware or higher specifications. Sony and Microsoft may also adjust their pricing after seeing the other company’s announced hardware and MSRP.

- A headset or other accessories.
- Storage expansion.
- A separate disc drive, if one is offered.
- Online multiplayer or game subscriptions.
- New games and possible price increases.
- Financing interest or fees.
- Warranty coverage.
Digital-only hardware can reduce the initial price but removes the ability to buy used discs, borrow games, resell physical copies, or use an existing disc library. A more expensive disc model may therefore be cheaper over several years for a buyer who regularly shops physical games.

Platform value matters as well. Xbox buyers may place significant value on backward compatibility, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Game Pass. PlayStation buyers may prioritize Sony’s exclusive releases, physical PS4 or PS5 libraries, and PlayStation Plus. Subscription prices and catalogs can change, so neither should be treated as a permanently fixed value.
Which buyers should wait?
Existing PlayStation owners
Wait for official PS6 specifications if you own a large physical PS4 or PS5 library, want Sony’s exclusives, or are considering paying near-next-generation money for a PS5 Pro. Buying a digital system without confirming the future disc strategy could create avoidable switching costs.
Existing Xbox owners
Helix may reduce switching costs if Microsoft’s four-generation compatibility commitment and Xbox Play Anywhere approach meet your needs. Your existing digital library and Game Pass use should be included in the comparison, not treated as incidental benefits.

Helix is most interesting if it offers meaningful PC-game support at a price below an equivalent gaming PC. If it approaches $1,000, compare the complete package with a PC’s upgradeability, storefront flexibility, non-gaming uses, and hardware warranty. Microsoft has not established that Helix will run every Windows application or PC storefront.
Budget buyers
A discounted, used, or certified-refurbished current-generation console may offer better value than either first-wave next-generation machine. Microsoft says certified refurbished Xbox consoles can be available for up to $100 below MSRP, subject to model and stock availability; check the official refurbished store for current listings.
Occasional players
If you play only occasionally, launch-day hardware may be poor value. A current console, cloud option, or remote-play setup can avoid paying an early-adopter premium while the next generation’s software library develops.
Final verdict
Project Helix is the more likely candidate for the higher base price because Microsoft is describing a machine that spans Xbox console and PC gaming, targets a substantial ray-tracing improvement, and may use more expensive memory, storage, and silicon. But that is a forecast, not an announced price.

PS6 could still be the more expensive product in a premium or disc-equipped configuration. Sony’s $899.99 PS5 Pro provides context for its premium positioning, while the widely repeated PS6 cost estimates remain unverified and should not be treated as retail pricing.
Until both companies announce matched configurations and official MSRPs, the most accurate answer is: Helix is more likely to cost more as a base platform, but neither console is a confirmed price winner.
