To make a PS5 use 5GHz Wi‑Fi, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, highlight your Wi‑Fi network, press the controller’s Options button, then choose Wi‑Fi Frequency Bands > 5GHz. Reconnect if prompted and run a connection test. 5GHz can deliver more speed when the console is near the router, but its shorter range means it is not automatically the better choice.
Does the PS5 support 5GHz Wi‑Fi?
Yes. PS5 consoles support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi‑Fi bands. Sony’s PS5 manual lists both WLAN ranges and warns that interference can reduce speed and range or interrupt a wireless connection. Exact wireless features can vary by model group and region.
Here, 5GHz means a Wi‑Fi frequency band, not 5G cellular service. A newer router does not automatically make a standard PS5 connect to 6GHz. The PS5 Pro’s Multi-Link Operation support is a separate feature, available only on the CFI-7000 model group when the access point supports it; it is not a requirement for ordinary 5GHz Wi‑Fi.
How to connect a PS5 to 5GHz Wi‑Fi
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Highlight the saved Wi‑Fi network you want to use.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Wi‑Fi Frequency Bands, then choose 5GHz instead of Automatic.
- Select the network and reconnect. Enter its password if the console asks for it.
- Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, or run the test from the setup screen.
Sony’s internet connection guide confirms the setup path through Set Up Internet Connection. The frequency-band selector’s wording or location may vary with system software or console model; if you do not see that exact label, look for an equivalent frequency-band option in the network setup controls.

If you cannot see the 5GHz network
Work through these checks before changing advanced router settings:
- Check that the router’s 5GHz radio is enabled. Some routers let you switch bands off independently.
- Check the network name (SSID). If 2.4GHz and 5GHz share one name, the PS5 may display only that combined network. Try the console’s frequency-band selector first. If it is unavailable or does not work reliably, temporarily give the router’s 5GHz band a separate name, such as
Home-5G, and connect the PS5 to it. - Move the console closer to the router temporarily. If the network appears nearby but not in the usual room, distance, floors, walls, or interference may be weakening the signal.
- Restart the PS5 and router, then check for router firmware updates.
- Check the router’s channel. If the PS5 still cannot find or hold the network, try a different 5GHz channel. Channel availability differs by country and router; a standard non-DFS channel can be a useful test where the router offers that choice.
- Check security and the password. Sony lists WPA, WPA2, WEP, and WPA3 among supported password/security options, but router compatibility and firmware can affect connection success. Use WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal where available; WEP is obsolete and should not be chosen for a new network.
Router menus differ by manufacturer, so consult its manual for settings such as band steering, SSID, channel, and security mode. Sony’s wireless LAN troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the password, router firmware, network name, obstacles, distance, and frequency band.

The PS5 supports IPv6, but not an IPv6-only network connection. If the router has been configured for IPv6-only service, enable IPv4 as well; do not disable IPv6 generally as a Wi‑Fi fix. See Sony’s connection guidance.

One Wi‑Fi name or separate names?

Separate SSIDs are a control and visibility option, not a universal speed upgrade. If you split the bands to test the PS5, you can keep the separate names or restore the combined setup once you know which connection works best.

Is 5GHz better than 2.4GHz for PS5 gaming?

For online play, a high download-speed number is not the same as a responsive connection. Latency consistency, packet loss, local congestion, the ISP connection, and the game server all matter. A strong 2.4GHz signal can be better than a weak 5GHz one. Selecting 5GHz may reduce local wireless congestion, but it does not guarantee lower ping.
How to tell whether switching helped
After connecting, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Note the download speed, upload speed, NAT type, and whether the test succeeds consistently. To compare bands, run the test from the same console location, at similar times, with heavy household downloads or streaming paused.

The built-in test is a useful comparison, not a controlled broadband benchmark. A good test result also does not rule out game-specific lag: investigate wireless dropouts, packet loss, restrictive NAT, router congestion, other household traffic, ISP instability, and server distance. If the connection problem may be service-related, check PlayStation Network status.

- Re-enter the Wi‑Fi password carefully and confirm the router’s security mode is compatible.
- Restart the PS5 and router, and install available router firmware updates.
- Test closer to the router. If the connection works there, the problem is likely coverage or interference in the usual room.
- Try a different 5GHz channel and, if needed, a separate 5GHz SSID. Router channel choices vary by location.
- Confirm the router supports IPv4 as well as IPv6; the PS5 does not support IPv6-only connections.
- Try another known-good 5GHz network or a phone hotspot, if available. That can help distinguish a console issue from a router configuration issue.
- If wireless remains unreliable, test with Ethernet. Sony’s wired path is Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- If the connection test succeeds but an online game still has problems, check NAT, packet loss, other network traffic, ISP stability, and PlayStation service status rather than changing Wi‑Fi bands repeatedly.
When to use Ethernet or improve the router setup
If the router is close enough to run a cable, Ethernet is generally the most dependable alternative for a PS5, especially when wireless interference causes dropouts or stability is important for competitive play. The wired setup is available in the PS5 network settings.
If the console is far from the router, first try improving router placement: an open, central, elevated position is generally better than a cabinet or a spot behind obstacles. A mesh node near the PS5 or an extender may improve coverage, but a wireless backhaul can limit throughput and add congestion or latency. A wired access point or mesh node with Ethernet backhaul is usually preferable where practical.
Do not buy a new router just to unlock 5GHz: the console already supports the band. Consider different equipment only if the current router cannot provide a stable signal where the PS5 is used, is outdated or unreliable, or cannot cover the home. Choose equipment for the actual problem—coverage, stability, or compatibility—not a router’s advertised maximum speed. A newer Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 router is not a reason by itself to expect a standard PS5 to use 6GHz.
