For an authorized eBay integration, use an official eBay API if it provides the data you need. A proxy only routes network requests; it does not grant permission to automate access to eBay or bypass its technical measures. eBay’s User Agreement says automated scraping requires its prior express permission. For search and item details, start with the Browse API; for category-level feeds, investigate the Feed API only if your application can obtain production access.

First, the permission question: a proxy is not permission

Before choosing a technical design, establish whether your intended automated access is authorized. eBay’s User Agreement prohibits using a scraper or similar automated means to access its services for any purpose without eBay’s prior express permission. It also prohibits circumventing technical measures. The agreement specifically includes automated tools such as scrapers and data-gathering or extraction tools.

A proxy changes the route or apparent network origin of a request. It does not change who is accessing eBay, what the software does, or whether eBay has authorized that access. Do not treat rotating IP addresses, residential proxies, or any other proxy arrangement as a way around the User Agreement or eBay’s technical controls.

eBay says it may limit, suspend, or terminate accounts and take technical or legal steps if it believes a user is violating its agreement or policies. That is not a claim that every violation receives the same sanction; it is a reason to resolve permission before building an automated scraper. If your use case is not covered by an official API or another authorization, ask eBay for express permission rather than assuming that a proxy makes it acceptable.

What the Browse API provides

The official Browse API is the natural starting point for an application that needs to search eBay listings or retrieve item details. Its documented search capabilities include keyword, category, product, GTIN, image, and other criteria; results can be refined, and item details can be retrieved. Browse methods require an application access token.

This is a structured API rather than a browser-page capture workflow: your application makes supported API calls and consumes the returned data. That distinction matters if you need dependable fields for a product search, listing lookup, or application feature. The API does not eliminate the need to read and comply with eBay’s developer requirements, license, and limits.

Typical decision path

  1. Define the exact data and operation you need, such as searching by keyword, filtering by category, or retrieving details for a known item.
  2. Check the Browse API documentation and determine whether its supported methods return the fields and scope your application requires.
  3. Register and configure an application through the eBay Developers Program, then obtain the application access token required by Browse methods.
  4. Design for the current call limits and the API License Agreement’s requirements, including keeping displayed listing information reasonably current.
  5. If the API does not cover the use case, obtain explicit authorization from eBay before using automated access by another means.

The exact token-generation steps and API request parameters are not specified here; use eBay’s current developer documentation rather than copying an example intended for a different method or API version.

When the Feed API may fit

The Feed API is aimed at a different data-access pattern: it can provide downloadable listing feeds for selected categories and marketplaces. That can suit an eligible application working with category-level feed data rather than making repeated individual search and item-detail requests.

Access is the important qualification. eBay describes the Feed API as limited release, and production use of Buy APIs has eligibility, approval, and contract requirements. Do not plan a production system on the assumption that an account can simply turn it on. Confirm your application’s eligibility and production approval with eBay before relying on it.

Affiliate tracking is separate

The Feed API does not supply eBay Partner Network tracking links. EPN publishers can retrieve a tracking link through Browse getItem or create one using eBay’s instructions. A feed’s listing data and the affiliate link therefore need to be handled as distinct parts of an implementation. This does not establish current EPN enrollment eligibility or commission terms.

Proxy vs. official API: practical comparison

Question Official eBay API Proxy-based scraping
Does it establish authorization? Use is governed by eBay’s developer license and applicable API requirements. Access to the API is not permission to exceed its allowed purposes. No. A proxy is network infrastructure, not eBay’s express permission to scrape.
What does it provide? Browse provides supported search and item-detail operations; Feed can provide downloadable category and marketplace feeds for eligible applications. A proxy routes requests. It does not itself provide a structured eBay data product.
How do you get access? Browse methods require an application access token. Feed production use may require eligibility, approval, and a contract. Buying or configuring a proxy does not provide API access or permission for automated scraping.
Limits and freshness API call limits apply. The API License Agreement also requires displayed item listing information to remain reasonably current. No relevant comparative proxy success rate, block rate, latency, or cost is established here. A proxy does not waive eBay’s policies.
Best fit An authorized application whose needs match the supported API methods, or an approved category-feed workflow. Not a policy workaround. Automated scraping still requires prior express permission.

Plan around API limits and data freshness

eBay’s Developers Program API call limits page lists default limits of 5,000 calls per day for most Browse methods and 5,000 calls per day for getItems. These figures are the defaults shown on the current limits page accessed in 2026; limits can change, so verify the live page for the specific method and application before setting quotas or launch capacity. eBay says limits depend on the API and may be increased after an Application Growth Check.

Do not treat the daily number as a target or as a guarantee that every request pattern is suitable. Implement request accounting, handle limit responses, and avoid retry loops that multiply calls. If planned demand exceeds the applicable limit, review eBay’s growth-check and approval requirements rather than trying to spread requests across proxies.

The API License Agreement says listing information displayed in an application may not be more than six hours older than the information displayed on eBay. That is a freshness constraint for displayed listing information, not a promise that every API response is updated on a fixed six-hour schedule. Build a refresh policy that keeps displayed data reasonably current, and consult the live agreement for the obligations relevant to your application.

How to choose for your use case

  • You need search or item details: Start with Browse and map your requirements to its supported search and detail methods.
  • You need category-level listing data in feeds: Evaluate Feed, but confirm limited-release availability and production approval before committing to it.
  • You need affiliate tracking: Treat EPN tracking as a separate implementation concern; Feed itself does not provide tracking links.
  • You are considering a proxy to avoid API constraints: Stop and resolve authorization with eBay. A proxy neither raises API limits nor authorizes automated scraping.
  • The official APIs do not expose what you need: Request express permission for the proposed automated access. Do not infer permission from technical feasibility.

ScreenshotNeo is for screenshots, not eBay data extraction

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an eBay listings API or a permission mechanism for scraping. It can be useful if your separate requirement is to render a webpage as an image or PDF; it does not replace Browse or Feed for structured listing data. See ScreenshotNeo for its screenshot service.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a visual capture of a page, one GET request can return a screenshot. The endpoint and documentation are at ScreenshotNeo docs. This example captures a page as WebP; it is not a method for extracting eBay listing data or bypassing eBay access controls.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

  • Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • “The proxy makes it okay.” It does not. Obtain prior express permission for automated scraping, and do not circumvent technical measures.
  • “An API token means any use is allowed.” No. API use remains subject to the license, permitted purposes, limits, and any applicable certification or approval requirements.
  • “The listed default limit will never change.” Limits are subject to change and may depend on API and application. Verify the live limits for each method before deployment.
  • “Feed is available to every production app.” Feed is described as limited release, and production Buy API access can require eligibility, approval, and a contract. Confirm access before designing around it.
  • “A feed includes EPN links.” It does not. Obtain tracking links through the applicable Browse workflow or eBay’s instructions, and separately confirm your EPN status and terms.
  • “A screenshot tool will return scrape-ready product fields.” A screenshot is a visual output, not structured eBay data. Use the authorized API for data fields; use a screenshot service only for a visual capture need.

FAQ

Can I use a proxy with the Browse API?

A proxy may be network infrastructure, but it does not change the API license, increase your allowed calls, or grant permission to scrape. Follow eBay’s current requirements for the specific application and request pattern.

Can I rely on the six-hour freshness rule as a cache duration?

No. The agreement’s stated constraint concerns how old listing information displayed in an application may be relative to eBay. It is not a prescribed cache TTL or a guarantee about response update timing.

Does a screenshot of a public eBay page count as structured API access?

No. A screenshot produces an image or PDF, not the API’s structured listing fields. Whether any automated page capture is authorized is a separate question that must be resolved under eBay’s terms.
