Use ordinary HTTP extraction for static HTML, a browser-rendered API when JavaScript builds the required DOM, and a headless browser when the job involves clicks, scrolling, forms, cookies or multi-step navigation. Residential or mobile routing, sticky sessions, fingerprinting and CAPTCHA handling can improve access, but they add cost, latency and compliance obligations. No vendor guarantees success on every domain.
What a proxy API actually does
A proxy API is a managed access layer between your application and a website. Instead of operating your own pool of servers and browsers, you send a URL and capture instructions to the provider. The service can select an IP address, route through a country or network type, maintain a session, execute JavaScript, and return HTML, a screenshot or structured data.
That abstraction solves infrastructure problems, not authorization. A proxy service does not make restricted data lawful to collect, and it cannot guarantee that a particular site will allow your request. Results vary with the domain’s defenses, requested geography, session state and the provider’s current behavior.
Choose the least complex architecture that meets the target
HTTP or API extraction for static pages
Start with a normal HTTP request when the information is present in the initial response or when the site exposes an authorised first-party endpoint. Validate the status code, redirects, character encoding and freshness before parsing. This path has the lowest overhead and is usually the fastest and least expensive.
Browser-rendered HTML for JavaScript pages
If the source response is only an application shell and the required content appears after JavaScript runs, request browser HTML. Zyte defines browser HTML as “the HTML representation of the Document Object Model (DOM) of a webpage after it has been rendered in a browser.” A managed browser can wait for a selector or a delay before returning the resulting DOM, without requiring you to maintain a browser fleet.

Headless-browser automation for interaction
Use a headless browser when extraction requires real interaction: clicking a tab, scrolling to trigger lazy loading, filling a form, accepting cookies, navigating through several pages or preserving state between steps. Zyte and Bright Data document controls for these actions, and Oxylabs describes headless browser as the better fit when real browser interaction is required.
Proxy-only routing as a separate layer
A proxy pool can be added to any of the three approaches. Datacenter addresses are generally economical; ISP, residential and mobile routes can look more like ordinary users and provide broader geographic choices, but normally cost more. ScraperAPI documents residential pools, country targeting and sticky sessions. Choose the smallest route that works for an authorised target instead of defaulting to the most expensive IP type.
Capabilities that determine whether a difficult target works
| Capability | Why it matters | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Residential or mobile IPs | Can reduce blocks aimed at datacenter traffic and provide local presence | Higher cost, variable latency and stronger consent and compliance review |
| Country or city targeting | Returns region-specific prices, inventory or language | Coverage and available addresses differ by provider and location |
| Sticky sessions and cookies | Keeps a login, cart or multi-page journey on one identity | Long-lived sessions can become a target for detection or stale state |
| Fingerprint and header controls | Aligns browser characteristics, headers and cookies with a realistic session | More settings to maintain; vendor claims are not independent success benchmarks |
| CAPTCHA and challenge handling | May recover a workflow that would otherwise stop | Not universal, may be restricted by policy, and does not grant permission to bypass access controls |
| Retries and adaptive routing | Recovers from transient failures and changes route when a pool is degraded | More requests, latency and potentially higher spend |
| Callbacks or asynchronous jobs | Lets long browser tasks run without holding an HTTP connection open | Requires signed webhook validation, job tracking and replay handling |
| Structured output | Reduces parser work when the provider returns fields or JSON | Schema changes can silently affect downstream data |
Provider fit: what each documented service is built to do
| Provider | Strongest documented fit | Controls and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Zyte API | Browser-rendered extraction and managed unblocking | Browser HTML, screenshots, actions, sessions, geolocation, proxy selection and compliance guardrails. Verify target-specific behavior and current pricing. |
| Bright Data Browser API | Interactive, highly protected pages | Proxy management, fingerprinting, CAPTCHA solving, JavaScript, retries, headers, cookies, clicking and scrolling. Its feature statements are vendor claims, not a neutral success benchmark. |
| ScraperAPI | Simple integration with rendering and proxy controls | Premium and residential proxies, rendering, redirects, geolocation, sticky sessions and anti-bot tuning. Its documentation says success can be lower on heavily protected sites. |
| Oxylabs | Enterprise structured extraction and difficult public-data acquisition | Web Scraper API, structured JSON, callbacks, Web Unblocker, rendering, fingerprinting and headless browser. Use headless browser when the workflow requires real interaction. |
| ScreenshotNeo | Clean website screenshots and PDFs | Cookie and popup removal, no billing for failed or challenged captures, an MCP server for AI agents and a $5 paid entry plan. |
For a screenshot API specifically, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try because it removes common consent and nuisance widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here. It is a visual capture API, not a general-purpose HTML or structured-data scraper.

How to select and pilot a proxy API
- Define the output. Decide whether you need raw HTML, rendered DOM, a screenshot, PDF or structured fields. Do not pay for browser execution when the initial response already contains the data.
- Describe the interaction. List required waits, clicks, scrolling, forms, cookies, authentication and pagination. A provider that only fetches a URL is insufficient for a multi-step flow.
- Specify geography and identity. Record countries, network type, session lifetime and whether one session must persist across requests.
- Check the target first. Review its terms, robots.txt, login and access controls, CAPTCHA behavior and any stated exclusions. Confirm that your purpose and collection method are authorised.
- Run a representative pilot. Test the actual domains, page types, regions and interaction paths you will operate. Measure successful output, challenge rate, timeout rate, latency, parser stability and cost. Vendor capability pages do not establish cross-provider success rates.
- Design for change. Version parsers, store provenance and keep a fallback route. A site can change its markup or defenses without notice.
A practical implementation pattern
Request and validate the response
Keep provider-specific credentials and endpoints in environment variables. Treat every response as untrusted until you check its status, content type, size, encoding and expected marker. A generic Python outline (replace PROXY_ENDPOINT with the endpoint supplied by your authorised provider) is:
import os
import requests
endpoint = os.environ["PROXY_ENDPOINT"]
params = {
"url": "https://target.example/page",
"render": "true",
"country": "US",
"session": "catalog-42",
}
response = requests.get(endpoint, params=params, timeout=90)
response.raise_for_status()
content_type = response.headers.get("content-type", "")
if "html" not in content_type:
raise ValueError(f"Unexpected content type: {content_type}")
html = response.text
if "product-list" not in html:
raise ValueError("Expected marker was not found; save the response for diagnosis")
Use the provider’s documented parameter names for rendering, waits, proxy type and sessions. Avoid infinite retries: classify failures first, then retry only transient network and rate-limit responses with exponential backoff and a cap.

Separate acquisition from parsing
Persist the requested URL, timestamp, route type, country, session identifier, response outcome, parser version and a provenance pointer. Keep raw responses only for the period your documented purpose requires. This makes schema drift and disputed records diagnosable without collecting more personal data than necessary.
Control concurrency
Start below the provider’s published limits, add a queue and enforce per-domain rate limits. Monitor latency percentiles, timeout classes, challenge frequency, empty documents and field-level changes. Increasing concurrency can raise error rates and spend rather than throughput.

When the deliverable is a clean visual capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts the consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. A direct call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Beyond a basic shot, it supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delays/network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePerformance, reliability and cost controls
- Choose rendering selectively: browser execution is slower and more resource-intensive than HTTP extraction. Route only JavaScript-dependent pages to it.
- Cache intentionally: cache only when freshness permits, and record the cache key and TTL. A cache hit may return old content while appearing successful.
- Use asynchronous jobs for long flows: signed callbacks avoid connection timeouts, but validate webhook signatures and make handlers idempotent.
- Budget by outcome: compare the cost of successful pages, not just the nominal request price. Include retries, browser time and residential or mobile surcharges.
- Keep a failure taxonomy: distinguish DNS and transport errors, HTTP blocks, challenge pages, empty renders, parser misses and policy denials. Each class needs a different response.
Troubleshooting common failures
The response is an empty shell
Cause: JavaScript has not run or the request returned an application shell. Fix: use browser-rendered HTML, wait for a stable selector or switch to an authorised endpoint.
Content appears only after scrolling or clicking
Cause: lazy loading or interaction-gated data. Fix: use headless actions, explicitly scroll or click, and wait for the resulting selector before extraction.
Frequent CAPTCHA or bot challenges
Cause: the site’s defenses identify the route, fingerprint, rate or behavior. Fix: verify authorization, slow the request pattern, use an appropriate geography and session, and consult the provider’s compliant challenge-handling options. Do not treat a proxy as permission to defeat an access control.
Rank #4
Sessions lose login or cart state
Cause: rotating identity, missing cookies or parallel requests sharing a session. Fix: enable a documented sticky session, persist cookies securely and serialize the steps that must share state.
Intermittent timeouts
Cause: slow origin responses, overloaded browser workers or an unsuitable route. Fix: set a bounded timeout, retry transient failures with backoff, reduce concurrency and test another permitted route or region.
Parser suddenly returns no records
Cause: schema drift, consent markup or a challenge page being mistaken for content. Fix: retain a sample response, check verdict and content markers, version the parser and alert on field-count changes.

Public visibility is not the same as unrestricted use. The European Data Protection Board says GDPR applies when scraping processes personal data and highlights purpose limitation, transparency, accuracy, minimisation and safeguards for special categories. CNIL states that “Web scraping is not, in itself, prohibited under the GDPR,” while requiring safeguards and respect for sites that oppose automated collection through measures such as CAPTCHAs or robots.txt. Canadian privacy regulators stated in October 2024 that publicly accessible personal information remains subject to privacy laws in most jurisdictions. The Italian Garante’s 30 May 2024 guidance recommends restricted areas, anti-scraping terms, traffic monitoring and technical controls such as robots.txt.
- Document the purpose, lawful basis and jurisdictions before collecting.
- Check terms, robots.txt, CAPTCHAs, access controls and provider restrictions.
- Collect only fields needed for that purpose; delete irrelevant or sensitive data promptly.
- Record URL, timestamp, route and geography, outcome, parser version and provenance.
- Provide retention, deletion, transparency and objection processes where required.
- Use contracts and access controls for vendors and keep credentials out of logs.
A proxy API is infrastructure, not a legal exemption. If a target or platform authorises an API, prefer it over scraping; if it forbids automated collection or requires a restricted login, obtain permission or do not collect.

FAQ
Do I always need residential proxies?
No. Use datacenter routing when the target permits it and you do not need residential geography. Move to ISP, residential or mobile routes only when testing shows a justified need and your legal review permits it.
Can a proxy API guarantee access to a protected site?
No. Success depends on the site’s defenses, geography, session state, interaction depth and changing vendor behavior. A representative authorised pilot is the only reliable way to establish suitability.
Is a screenshot API a substitute for a scraping browser?
No. Screenshot APIs return visual files or PDFs. If you need DOM fields, form workflows or structured records, use an HTML or headless-browser product; use ScreenshotNeo when the required output is a clean visual capture.
Frequently Asked Questions
