Proton VPN’s Android app lets people in Brazil start the free VPN by choosing Continue as guest (or Continuar como convidado), without creating or signing in to a Proton account. This is guest access, not an anonymous account login. The important limitation is that Proton says its Free plan does not include Brazilian VPN servers, so a guest connection from Brazil may use a server in another country.
What “without registration” means
There are three different actions:
- Registration: creating a Proton account, normally with account details.
- Login: entering credentials for an existing account.
- Guest mode: opening the Android app and using the free VPN without either of those steps.
Proton’s Android documentation describes the guest option as access to the app’s free features without a Proton account. It does not mean that your phone, internet provider, Android, or the VPN service processes no technical connection data. A VPN also does not make every activity completely anonymous.
Proton has highlighted Brazil as a significant source of demand for censorship-circumvention tools, but guest mode is documented as a general Android feature, not a Brazil-only service. See Proton’s Android guide and censorship report.
How to use Proton VPN on Android without an account
- Install the official Proton VPN app from Google Play, F-Droid, or Proton’s official Android download page. Proton also publishes an APK through its official GitHub distribution.
- Open Proton VPN.
- At the account screen, tap Continue as guest or Continuar como convidado. Labels can vary with the app language and version.
- Approve Android’s VPN connection request when it appears.
- Tap Quick Connect (Portuguese: Conexão rápida) or the fastest-server control.
- Wait for the app to show a connected state, then check Android’s VPN indicator.
- If you need to verify the exit location, check your public IP with a reputable IP-checking service. The result may show a country other than Brazil.
What guest mode provides
Guest mode gives access to Proton’s free Android service. Proton’s Free-plan pages describe no stated data cap and no artificial bandwidth limit, but those are plan claims—not a promise of a particular speed, latency, or uninterrupted connection.

Proton documents guest mode as access to free features; premium functionality requires signing in with a paid Proton VPN account. Details are listed in Proton’s Free Android page and free-versus-paid comparison.
Does Proton VPN Free provide a Brazilian IP address?
Not according to Proton’s current Brazil server information. You can use Proton VPN Free while physically located in Brazil, but Proton says Brazil is not a Free server location. Free users are connected to available free servers elsewhere, while selecting Brazil requires a paid plan.

A paid plan is the practical choice if you need a Brazilian exit location, broader country selection, premium features such as NetShield or Secure Core, or up to 10 simultaneous devices. Proton advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for Proton VPN Plus on its Brazil pricing page; current price fields can change.

The guest button is missing
- Update Proton VPN through the official store or download channel.
- Confirm that the app is the official Proton VPN app, not a clone.
- Force-stop and reopen the app.
- If necessary, clear app data, noting that this can remove local settings or guest-session state.
- Reinstall from Google Play, F-Droid, or Proton’s official download route.
Interface labels can differ by language, device, distribution channel, and release. Proton’s current Android release notes list version 5.18.19.16 dated June 29, 2026, and still reference upgrades from an anonymous guest account. That indicates guest functionality remains part of the current product, although your device may show a different version.

The VPN will not connect
- Accept Android’s VPN permission prompt.
- Disable another VPN or always-on VPN profile temporarily.
- Try a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
- Restart the app and phone, then retry Quick Connect.
The IP check shows another country
That is expected on the Free service: being in Brazil and receiving a Brazilian VPN IP are different things. Proton says free users are not assigned free Brazilian servers. A paid plan is required to select Brazil under the current server listing.
Streaming still fails
Proton does not guarantee geo-blocked streaming on the Free plan. Streaming providers can detect and block VPN addresses, and even a paid connection is not an absolute bypass for every service. A paid plan may provide more suitable locations, but it cannot promise universal access.

You downloaded an APK
Use only Proton’s official download channels. Technically experienced users can compare an APK’s signing certificate fingerprint with the fingerprint published on Proton’s Android download page.
Android compatibility caveat
Proton’s own pages currently disagree about the minimum Android version. The general support guide says Android 8.0 or later, while the Brazilian Android product page says Android 6.0 or later. Because those statements conflict, rely on the current Play Store compatibility notice or the installation result for your device rather than assuming either number applies universally.
Quick Recap
Which option fits your situation?
- Choose guest mode for quick, temporary VPN protection without account creation, when the server country does not matter.
- Create a free Proton account when you want persistent account-based access, recovery, or easier movement between devices.
- Choose a paid Proton plan when you specifically need a Brazilian IP, selectable locations, premium features, or Proton’s paid-plan streaming guarantee.
