For most households, the best starting point is filtered DNS configured on the home router, followed by device-level parental controls on phones and tablets that leave the house. Router DNS filtering covers devices using that network—including televisions, consoles and many smart-home products—without installing an app everywhere. It is a baseline safeguard, not a complete view of every page, message, image or video: it normally blocks domains and DNS lookups, and can be bypassed by cellular data, VPNs, alternate resolvers, encrypted DNS or another network.
What web content filtering can—and cannot—do
Filtering systems can block known malware, phishing and adult-content domains; categories such as gambling, pornography, social media, streaming, gaming, shopping or messaging; and, on supported services, enforce SafeSearch or YouTube Restricted Mode. They may also provide schedules, allow/block exceptions and activity logs. For example, eero’s controls offer age presets, category rules, profile assignment and exceptions, while NextDNS advertises categories, SafeSearch, schedules, app and game blocking, profiles, analytics and encrypted DNS.
DNS is the lookup that translates a domain such as example.com into an IP address. A DNS filter refuses or redirects that lookup before a connection is made. It normally decides at the domain level, not by URL path: blocking a shared domain can disable an entire service, while allowing it can permit many types of content hosted there. HTTPS protects page contents from ordinary network inspection, so DNS filtering does not automatically read text, images, private messages or video within an allowed site. Category databases also produce false positives and false negatives.

Secure the router before adding a filter
A filter cannot compensate for a compromised gateway. Follow the FTC’s guidance:

- Install current router firmware.
- Use WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal where WPA3 is unavailable.
- Set unique Wi-Fi and administrator passwords.
- Disable remote administration, WPS and UPnP when you do not need them.
- Keep the router firewall enabled.
- Use a guest SSID for visitors and, where practical, risky IoT devices. Verify whether each SSID inherits the same DNS policy; do not assume it does.

OpenDNS lists FamilyShield as preconfigured adult-content filtering and OpenDNS Home as a customizable free option. NextDNS lists Pro at £1.79 per month or £17.90 per year; prices and terms can change. AdGuard DNS is a hosted alternative with ad, tracker, malware, adult-content and SafeSearch controls. Hosted providers can see DNS queries and associated metadata according to their policies; self-hosting changes local administration but not necessarily the visibility of your chosen upstream resolver.
Fastest setup: Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families
These values provide Cloudflare’s malware-plus-adult-content policy. Router labels vary—look under Internet, WAN, DHCP or DNS.

- Sign in to the router’s administration page or app.
- Open the Internet/WAN/DHCP/DNS settings and choose Manual or Custom DNS.
- Enter IPv4 primary
1.1.1.3and secondary1.0.0.3. - Apply the change, reboot if requested, then reconnect clients or renew their leases.
- Test an ordinary site and Cloudflare’s test addresses: malware.testcategory.com and nudity.testcategory.com.
If the router distributes IPv6 DNS, also set 2606:4700:4700::1113 and 2606:4700:4700::1003. Otherwise IPv6 devices may use the ISP resolver and evade the intended policy. Cloudflare publishes malware-only addresses (1.1.1.2, 1.0.0.2) and encrypted endpoints, including malware-plus-adult DoH at https://family.cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query, in its setup documentation.

Undoing a failed DNS change
- Return to the router’s DNS page.
- Restore Automatic, ISP or the previous known-good values.
- Apply and reconnect devices.
- Check for a mistyped address, unsupported field, IPv6 mismatch or provider outage.
Custom profiles with NextDNS
Create separate configurations for children, adults, work devices or guests, then assign devices by their profile identifiers. You can combine threat, ad, tracker and parental categories with allowlists, blocklists, SafeSearch, YouTube restrictions, schedules and analytics. Device applications or profiles can extend the policy to other Wi-Fi networks and cellular connections. The free plan includes 300,000 queries per month; once exceeded, NextDNS says it answers as conventional non-blocking DNS, so do not treat the free quota as unlimited filtering.

Self-hosted filtering with AdGuard Home
AdGuard Home runs a local DNS service on macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi or compatible hardware. Install it on an always-on host, give that host a stable local IP, configure the router’s DHCP/DNS service to advertise that address, then add lists, allow rules, parental controls, SafeSearch and upstream resolvers. Keep the host powered, updated and backed up, and plan a fallback resolver: a failed host, changed IP, damaged storage or competing DHCP server can make the whole household appear offline. Router-native controls
Existing mesh owners may prefer integrated controls. Google Home exposes custom DNS at Wi-Fi → Network settings → Advanced Networking → DNS; Google warns that an incorrect server can stop connected devices reaching the internet (documentation). Google advertises website blocking, explicit-content controls, schedules and time-outs on Nest Wifi (product page). eero’s category filters, profiles, exceptions and activity insights require eero Plus according to its support documentation.

Verify coverage and resistance to bypasses
- Confirm an ordinary allowed site loads and a known test domain is blocked.
- Repeat on a laptop, phone, tablet, TV, console and relevant IoT device, including the guest SSID.
- Test after a router reboot and on an IPv6-capable device.
- Confirm the resolver path. Clients may show the router’s address because it proxies DNS; inspect the router’s upstream setting as well.
- On supervised devices, check whether users can set custom DNS, enable Private DNS or browser DoH, install a VPN/proxy, switch to cellular data or join another Wi-Fi network.
Router features may redirect outbound DNS or block known DoH endpoints, but no router DNS setting defeats every encrypted-DNS, VPN or cellular path. Device-management policies and operating-system parental controls are needed for stronger off-network enforcement.
Common problems and practical fixes
Blocked sites still open
Check IPv6, alternate DNS, browser secure DNS, VPNs, proxies, hard-coded addresses and whether the device is on cellular or another SSID. Direct IP connections can avoid a DNS lookup, although HTTPS certificates and application behavior often make them unreliable.

A legitimate site or app breaks
Category systems can misclassify domains, and shared domains may serve login, advertising, games and desired content together. Add a narrowly scoped allow exception where supported, or move the device to a profile with a different policy. Streaming, advertising, games and smart-home functions are especially sensitive; DNS blocking will not remove every ad.
The whole network lost internet access
Restore automatic or previous DNS values first. Then verify the addresses, router support, IPv6 settings, ISP gateway behavior and that you have not created two DHCP servers. ISP-managed gateways may require advanced WAN settings, bridge mode or replacement; confirm that mesh extenders inherit the intended configuration.
Filtering stops outside home
That is expected for router-only DNS. Use device-level controls or a service profile designed for mobile and desktop clients.

Plain DNS is visible to the resolver and network intermediaries; encrypted DNS protects the query in transit from some observers but sends it to the resolver provider and does not make browsing anonymous. NextDNS offers configurable retention from one hour to two years or disabled logging, a provider-specific feature rather than a general DNS property. Public filtered DNS is easiest but externalizes queries; managed services add profiles and logs; self-hosting gives local control while upstream DNS still matters unless you operate a recursive resolver.
Filtering reduces exposure; it does not determine whether every item is age-appropriate, detect every harmful interaction or replace conversation, supervision and operating-system controls.
