For most modern presentations, choose Widescreen (16:9), which is 13.333 × 7.5 inches (33.867 × 19.05 cm). Use Standard (4:3), at 10 × 7.5 inches, only when an older projector, existing deck, or client specification requires it. Posters, print pages, banners, phone graphics, signage, and other specialized outputs need a custom width and height.
The right setting is determined by where the slide will be shown or printed—not by the PPTX file extension or the size of an image placed on it.
PowerPoint slide-size presets
| Preset | Aspect ratio | Dimensions | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 4:3 | 10 × 7.5 in | Legacy projectors, older displays, existing 4:3 decks |
| Widescreen | 16:9 | 13.333 × 7.5 in (33.867 × 19.05 cm) | Modern monitors, projectors, TVs, webinars, video calls and video |
| On-screen Show (16:9) | 16:9 | 10 × 5.625 in | A screen-oriented 16:9 canvas with a smaller physical document size |
| On-screen Show (16:10) | 16:10 | 10 × 6.25 in | Displays using a 16:10 frame |
| Overhead | Approximately 4:3 | 10 × 7.5 in | Legacy overhead-transparency layouts |
| 35 mm Slides | Approximately 3:2 | 11.25 × 7.5 in | Legacy slide output |
| Banner | 8:1 | 8 × 1 in | Simple horizontal banners |
These preset values and the current menu behavior are documented by Microsoft. Widescreen and On-screen Show (16:9) have the same shape; Widescreen simply provides a larger physical canvas for designing.
Which size should you choose?
Modern screen presentations
Choose Widescreen 16:9 for current monitors, TVs, projectors, Teams, Zoom, Google Meet and browser-based viewing. It provides more horizontal room for charts, timelines and full-width images, and is the least troublesome format when a deck later becomes a video.
Older equipment or a legacy template
Choose Standard 4:3 when the venue specifies it, the projector is known to be 4:3, or an established deck must retain its layout. A 4:3 file shown on a widescreen display can acquire side bars or look poorly framed, while converting a heavily designed deck can require manual rebuilding.
#1 Best Overall
Print, posters and banners
Use the printer’s finished width and height rather than a presentation preset. Examples are US Letter at 8.5 × 11 inches, A4 at 210 × 297 mm, and a poster or banner at the printer’s supplied trim size. Ask whether bleed, safe margins, crop marks or a particular PDF specification is required.
Vertical, mobile and signage content
Use custom portrait dimensions for a phone graphic, vertical display, social post or kiosk. A 9:16 design could be 7.5 × 13.333 inches or any proportional equivalent. For digital signage, match the display’s native ratio; for video, match the destination frame.
An existing or shared deck
Ask the recipient, venue or client for its required ratio before designing. If a deck is already formatted, duplicate it and test the conversion before changing the working copy.

Is 16:9 the PowerPoint default?
Microsoft’s current documentation lists 16:9 Widescreen as the default for new presentations in Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 on supported Windows, macOS and web versions. The default applies to new files: an older presentation or template can remain 4:3, and changing one presentation does not change future files. Templates can define their own ratio.
How to change PowerPoint slide size
The path is the same in principle on Windows, Mac and PowerPoint for the web, although labels and dialogs vary by edition:
- Open the presentation and select Design.
- Select Slide Size.
- Choose Standard (4:3), Widescreen (16:9) or Custom Slide Size.
- If PowerPoint asks how to scale existing content, choose the option that matches your priority.
- Inspect every slide, including its master and layouts, before distributing the file.
Desktop versions commonly show Maximize and Ensure Fit; some dialogs use Scale and Don’t Scale. Microsoft explains the behavior on its slide-size support page.
Rank #2
Maximize versus Ensure Fit
- Maximize enlarges content to use more of the new canvas, but objects can extend beyond the visible slide.
- Ensure Fit (or Don’t Scale) keeps content visible by shrinking or retaining it, but can leave larger margins and make text too small for a room.
How to create a custom slide size
- Go to Design → Slide Size → Custom Slide Size.
- Enter Width and Height in the units offered by your version: inches, centimeters, or, where available, pixels.
- Set Slides to Landscape or Portrait.
- Select OK, then choose the scaling behavior for existing content.
Microsoft documents a supported interface range of approximately 1 inch (2.54 cm or 120 px) minimum to 56 inches (142.24 cm or 720 px) maximum. PowerPoint may convert entries to the operating system’s preferred unit, and controls differ across versions and platforms. These limits should not be assumed for every historical release or third-party editor.

Portrait and vertical PowerPoint slides
PowerPoint does not have a separate “portrait file” type. Portrait is an orientation selected in Custom Slide Size, and the orientation applies to the entire presentation. For a Letter handout use 8.5 × 11 inches; for A4 use 210 × 297 mm. For vertical 16:9 content, use a 9:16 ratio.
PowerPoint cannot maintain different slide dimensions or orientations in one normal presentation. Workarounds include separate decks, placing a portrait image or video on a landscape slide, or exporting slides and assembling a PDF or video in another application. Microsoft describes the one-size and one-orientation limitation in its size documentation and page-layout documentation.
Changing a finished deck from 4:3 to 16:9
Resizing changes the canvas; it does not redesign the presentation. Save a backup first, change the size, and then work through this checklist:
- Check text boxes for overflow and changed line wrapping.
- Re-crop full-bleed images and inspect background graphics.
- Review SmartArt, grouped objects, charts and tables.
- Reposition title, footer and other placeholders.
- Open View → Slide Master and check masters and individual layouts.
- Verify video framing and animation paths.
- View the deck at 100% zoom and in Slide Show mode.
- Export a test PDF or image set before sending it.
Use Ensure Fit when preserving every object matters. Use Maximize only when you are prepared to repair overflow and redesign spacing. Neither option makes the editorial decisions a human designer must make.

Printing: slide size is not paper size
A 16:9 slide does not naturally fit Letter or A4. Printing it may add margins, reduce the artwork, or crop it depending on whether the print dialog is set to fit or fill. Establish the final physical dimensions first, then ask the printer about bleed, color mode, safe areas and PDF requirements. PowerPoint can produce useful print layouts, but it is not a full prepress application.
Aspect ratio, dimensions and resolution
Aspect ratio describes shape: 16:9 is 1.777… width units for each height unit, while 4:3 is 1.333…. Slide dimensions describe the document canvas in inches, centimeters or another unit. Output resolution describes pixels in an exported image or video.
1920 × 1080 pixels is a common Full HD 16:9 output frame; it is not a PowerPoint canvas measured in 1920 × 1080 inches or centimeters. Set the slide ratio first, then export or record at the pixel dimensions required by the destination. A 16:9 slide can be exported at many resolutions without changing its shape.
Video calls and screen sharing
For Teams, Zoom, Meet and similar services, 16:9 usually matches the computer screen and video frame. Keep essential text away from extreme edges, use type large enough to survive compression, and test screen sharing at the same window size used in the meeting. The meeting application’s camera and sharing behavior can add bars or cropping independently of the slide ratio, so test a recording when video delivery matters.
Troubleshooting common size problems
Objects are cut off after resizing
Undo and retry with Ensure Fit, or keep the resized copy and move objects back inside the slide. Check grouped elements, SmartArt and master placeholders individually.
Rank #4
Text became too small
Ensure Fit may preserve visibility by shrinking content. Reduce wording, rebuild the layout, or use fewer objects instead of accepting unreadable type.
Images look stretched or have unexpected blank areas
Check the image’s crop and fill settings, then recrop it for the new ratio. Do not confuse a letterbox or margin with a faulty export.
Print output has margins or is cropped
Compare the slide ratio with the paper ratio and choose fit-to-paper or fill-page deliberately. A printer-supplied trim and bleed specification takes precedence over a screen preset.

Google Slides
Google Slides offers Widescreen 16:9, Standard 4:3, other presets and custom dimensions in inches, centimeters, points or pixels. It is well suited to browser collaboration and Google Drive teams. PowerPoint files can be imported and edited, but PowerPoint-specific fonts, animations, macros and advanced chart behavior may not transfer exactly. See Google’s page-size instructions and Google Slides.

Canva
Canva is useful for templates, custom-size presentations, posters, banners and social graphics, with PDF, JPG and PNG exports. It is less suitable when recipients need complex, natively editable PPTX files or exact PowerPoint animation fidelity. Features and plans change; consult Canva’s PowerPoint alternative page and current pricing.
Dedicated layout software
For large-format posters, strict color management or printer-specific prepress work, a dedicated layout application may provide better control than PowerPoint. Choose based on whether the deliverable must remain an editable presentation, PDF, image or video.
