If a PowerPoint slide turns black or white during a presentation, press B or W once to undo the slideshow’s blank-screen mode. If that does not help, identify what is actually blank: one slide, the whole show, Presenter View, or only the projector. Each points to a different fix.
Start with the symptom table below. The Windows-specific graphics, Safe Mode, and repair steps are labeled; PowerPoint for Mac and the web version do not have all the same controls.
Identify what is going blank

First fix: undo black or white blank-screen mode
During a slide show, PowerPoint lets the presenter deliberately blank the screen. Press B to toggle a black screen or W to toggle a white screen. Press the same key again to return to the slide. These shortcuts are documented by Microsoft.

If you are unsure what mode the show is in, press Esc to exit and restart it. On Windows, F5 starts from the beginning, Shift+F5 starts from the current slide, and Alt+F5 opens Presenter View. During the show, Right Arrow, Spacebar, Enter, or Page Down advances; Left Arrow, Backspace, or Page Up goes back. Shortcut availability can vary by platform and keyboard setup.

If only one slide is blank or missing
A hidden slide is retained in the presentation but skipped during the normal show; it is not the same as a visible slide whose objects fail to render. Microsoft explains how to hide or show a slide.
- In the thumbnail pane, look for a hidden-slide indicator, often a slash through the slide number. Right-click that thumbnail and choose Unhide Slide.
- If you are already presenting, right-click the show, choose See All Slides, and select the missing slide.
- In the editor, open Home > Arrange > Selection Pane. Confirm that the important objects are visible; the pane can also expose objects that have been hidden or layered behind others. See Microsoft’s Selection Pane guidance.
- Look for a large image, shape, or transparent rectangle covering the content. Check whether text or images sit outside the slide edges.
- Review animations for effects that hide, fade out, or delay the objects. Temporarily remove animations and transitions from a copy of the slide to see whether the content returns.
To distinguish a slide problem from a PowerPoint problem, save a copy of the file and copy the affected slide’s contents into a new blank slide or presentation. If the copy works, the original slide or its layout may be the issue. Rebuilding only that slide is safer than recreating the entire deck.
If the projector, second monitor, or Presenter View is blank
First decide which display is wrong. Presenter View normally shows notes and controls on the presenter’s screen while the audience display shows the slide. If the laptop is correct but a projector shows black, PowerPoint may not be producing a blank slide at all: the projector could be on the wrong input or have lost the signal.

- Check that the monitor or projector is powered on and set to the connected input. Reseat the cable, and if possible test a different cable, port, adapter, or projector input.
- On Windows, open Settings > System > Display and confirm the external display is detected. For the normal private-notes workflow, choose Extend these displays. Duplicating displays is a useful diagnostic, but it shows the same output on both screens rather than providing the usual separate Presenter View.
- In PowerPoint, open Slide Show > Set Up Slide Show. Check the selected monitor and Presenter View setting. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions explain the setup.
- If Presenter View and the audience slide are on the wrong screens, use Presenter View’s Display Settings > Swap Presenter View and Slide Show.
- For a quick comparison, turn Presenter View off and run the ordinary slide show. If that fixes the problem, the display assignment or Presenter View path is implicated, not necessarily the slide content.
If the screen goes blank when you click another app, or only while presenting through Teams or Zoom, isolate the output chain: test without the meeting app, capture card, dock, USB-C adapter, or virtual-display device; disconnect the second monitor; then reconnect the display before launching PowerPoint. In a meeting app, share the actual slide-show window or intended display, not the notes window. These are diagnostic tests, not proof that any one device or app is at fault.
Test slide-show graphics acceleration (Windows desktop)
If the editor looks normal but the show is blank, flashing, or unreliable during transitions, video, or animation, test PowerPoint’s hardware graphics setting. In Windows desktop PowerPoint, go to File > Options > Advanced > Display, select Disable Slide Show hardware graphics acceleration, choose OK, then close PowerPoint completely and reopen it.
Run the same slide show again. If it now works, graphics rendering is implicated. The setting is a troubleshooting workaround, not a universal performance improvement: turning acceleration off can reduce performance, particularly with complex visual effects. Reverse the setting if it makes no difference or worsens playback. Microsoft documents the control in its PowerPoint Advanced options and discusses rendering factors in its presentation performance guidance. This Windows setting may not appear in PowerPoint for Mac or PowerPoint for the web.

Test whether the presentation file is the problem
Save a duplicate before making changes. Create a new blank presentation, add one text box, and run the show. If even that test deck goes blank, focus on the PowerPoint installation or display path. If it works, test a copy of the affected slide in a new deck; a failure limited to the original file points toward its content or file state.
- Try the file on another computer or open it in PowerPoint for the web, if available. Web playback is a comparison, not a feature-for-feature replacement for the desktop app.
- Use Save As to make a fresh copy, or copy slides into a new presentation. Check the result for missing fonts, timings, sections, links, or media, which may not transfer exactly.
- Temporarily remove or replace embedded video, animated objects, transparent graphics, unusual fonts, transitions, and complex effects. If a static version works, restore elements one at a time to isolate the trigger.
- If the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint, check whether an earlier version works. For a downloaded, emailed, or synced file, confirm that it finished transferring and that the saved copy opens normally.
These steps help locate a file-specific problem; they do not guarantee recovery of damaged content. Office repair, described below, addresses the application installation and may not repair an individual presentation.
Check add-ins and update PowerPoint (Windows)
If the problem affects multiple decks, test PowerPoint without its startup add-ins. Close PowerPoint, press Windows key + R, type powerpnt /safe, and press Enter. Run the presentation in Safe Mode. Microsoft describes this Windows diagnostic in its instructions for opening Office apps in Safe Mode.

If the show works in Safe Mode, an add-in or extension may be involved. In normal PowerPoint, open File > Options > Add-Ins. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins from the Manage list, select Go, and disable the add-ins. Restart PowerPoint and test; re-enable them one at a time until the problem returns. Safe Mode and this command are Windows-focused and should not be treated as Mac or web instructions. Microsoft also recommends isolating add-ins when Office behaves abnormally in its PowerPoint troubleshooting guidance.
Install available Office updates and test again. If the issue persists across new and existing presentations, also check for graphics, dock, or DisplayLink driver updates from the relevant device or computer manufacturer. Do not assume an update caused the failure unless a Microsoft issue entry matches your PowerPoint version and symptoms; a general report of a blank slide is not enough to identify a known bug.
Repair Office only after simpler tests
Consider repairing Office if several presentations fail, PowerPoint also freezes or crashes, and the problem remains after updating, checking display settings, and testing without add-ins. On Windows, close Office apps, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select your Office installation, and choose Change. Follow the repair choices shown for that installation; labels and options differ among Microsoft 365, Click-to-Run, and perpetual Office editions. The repair process may require administrative access or a restart. Microsoft’s repair guidance covers this path. Repair is not an early fix for a single damaged slide, and the Windows procedure does not apply to Mac in the same way.

If the presentation ends on black
A black screen after the final slide can be intentional. In Windows desktop PowerPoint, open File > Options > Advanced > Slide Show and clear End with black slide if you want the last content slide to remain visible at the end. The option is documented in Microsoft’s Advanced options.
When to contact support
If the blanking continues, record the PowerPoint edition and build, Windows or macOS version, whether one deck or all decks are affected, the number and type of displays, Presenter View status, and any dock, adapter, projector, or capture device in the chain. Note whether B/W, a new test deck, disabling acceleration, and Safe Mode changed the result, and whether the file contains video, animations, macros, or unusual fonts. Those details help separate a slide-specific fault from a display or installation issue.
