Polotno is a JavaScript/React SDK that your team integrates, stores, secures, and customizes. Orshot is a hosted editor delivered through an iframe or framework wrapper, with rendering, templates, and automation managed as a service. Choose Polotno when product-specific UI and infrastructure control matter most; choose Orshot when a packaged, multi-tenant editor and hosted rendering are more valuable than owning the editor stack.
The short answer
Use Polotno if your team wants to compose editor components into an existing application, replace panels and controls, connect its own authentication and storage, and decide where rendering runs. Use Orshot Embed if you want to load a ready-made editor in an iframe, pass templates and data through documented integrations, and consume hosted rendering and automation features under a subscription plan.
Neither is universally better. Polotno gives you a wider integration surface and more responsibility. Orshot reduces the amount of editor infrastructure you operate but imposes a hosted boundary, plan quotas, and iframe constraints.
The comparison below uses vendor documentation and pricing pages observed September 29, 2026. Features, prices, framework support, and plan limits can change; verify the current terms before signing a contract.

How the integration models differ
Polotno: an SDK inside your application
Polotno describes its product as a JavaScript library and set of React components for building customized canvas editors. Your application renders the editor, works with Polotno’s shared JSON design model, and decides how designs, users, assets, and permissions are persisted. The default 4.x line targets React 19, while a 3.x line targets React 18. Documentation also links integrations for Vue, Angular, plain JavaScript, and mobile-oriented use.
This is a composable approach: you can register controls, replace or rearrange panels, connect an asset library, style the editor, and attach lifecycle or synchronization hooks. Polotno’s customization page summarizes the philosophy as: Polotno SDK was designed to be molded into your product, not the other way around.
That flexibility also means your team owns authentication, authorization, storage, tenancy rules, deployment, and much of the operational integration. Polotno’s documentation explicitly says authentication is not handled internally.
Orshot: a hosted editor embedded in your UI
Orshot’s editor is loaded from its service through an iframe. Its integration guide documents an embed ID, a sized container, allowed domains, content-security-policy considerations, and HTTPS for production. React/Next.js, Vue, and Angular wrappers are documented, so you can expose the editor through familiar framework components without running the editor backend yourself.
The React integration exposes template and modification properties, callbacks for template and download events, and methods to switch templates, update data, and request exports. You configure the integration, but the editor remains within Orshot’s hosted boundary. That can shorten delivery time; it can also limit interactions that require direct control of the editor’s DOM or server.

| Decision axis | Polotno SDK | Orshot Embed | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting boundary | Integrated into your application; self-hosting is described as the default, with an optional Cloud Render API. | Hosted editor embedded by iframe or wrapper. | Data residency, service-availability requirements, CSP, and whether third-party hosting is acceptable. |
| UI control | Custom panels, controls, theming, branding, and integration hooks. | Configurable embed settings and documented controls within the hosted interface. | Whether each custom interaction exists in the selected Orshot plan or requires a Polotno implementation. |
| Identity and assets | Your team supplies authentication, database, storage, permissions, and asset sources. | Per-user data and assets, permissions, and plan-dependent multi-tenancy are documented features. | User isolation, retention, migration, tenant count, and quota behavior. |
| Rendering | Client-side, self-hosted, or cloud rendering paths; exports include vendor-listed image, document, vector, animation, video, and presentation formats. | Hosted API rendering consumes monthly plan credits. | Required formats, concurrency, latency, and the cost of operating your chosen path. |
| Framework fit | React-first SDK with documented Vue, Angular, plain JavaScript, and mobile-oriented options. | Iframe plus React, Vue, and Angular integration routes. | Responsive behavior, event delivery, navigation, and iframe policy in your app shell. |
Polotno’s feature page lists canvas editing, pages and layers, image and video editing, PDF import/edit/export, templates, APIs, PNG/JPG, PDF, SVG, HTML, GIF, MP4, and PPTX exports, plus print-related CMYK and bleed options. These are vendor-published capabilities: availability can depend on runtime and implementation. Orshot’s feature page lists imports from Canva, Figma, HTML, URL, Polotno, Bannerbear, and Templated; dynamic parameters, text autofit, pagination, smart resize, animation, custom fonts, and a brand-assets library.
Embedding Orshot in an application
Orshot’s documented flow is suitable when an iframe is an acceptable boundary.
- Create or select an Orshot embed and note its embed ID.
- Place the iframe or the React, Vue, or Angular wrapper in a container with an explicit width and height. Test narrow and wide layouts rather than relying on an unconstrained height.
- Add the production domains permitted by Orshot’s embed settings.
- Review your Content-Security-Policy and frame-related headers, and serve the production page over HTTPS.
- Pass the template and modification data required by your workflow. Wire template-change and download callbacks if your application needs audit records, navigation, or post-export processing.
- Test switching templates, updating data, requesting an export, and handling a user who lacks permission or whose plan has exhausted credits.
An iframe can simplify browser compatibility because the editor’s UI is not bundled into your application, but it also means your app cannot freely style internal controls or query the editor’s document tree. Treat the documented events and methods as the integration contract.
Building with Polotno
With Polotno, start by installing the SDK version that matches your React major version, render the editor components in your application shell, and define how a design JSON document is loaded and saved. Next, connect your authentication provider and storage layer, register the controls and panels your workflow needs, and configure asset upload and retrieval. Finally, choose client-side, self-hosted, or cloud rendering for each output path.
This sequence matters because Polotno does not supply your product’s identity system. A production design editor usually needs:
- Tenant-aware authorization for loading, editing, sharing, and deleting designs.
- Durable storage for the JSON model and uploaded assets, with versioning or recovery if users overwrite work.
- Asset validation, size limits, malware checks, and a strategy for external fonts or media.
- Autosave and conflict handling if the same design can be open in multiple sessions.
- Export workers or a Cloud Render integration when browser rendering is insufficient.
Polotno’s common JSON model can keep editing and rendering workflows aligned, but you still need to test fidelity with your own fonts, images, videos, page sizes, bleed, and PDF requirements.
Rendering, exports, and operating responsibility
Polotno rendering choices
Polotno documents client-side rendering, self-hosted rendering, and a Cloud Render API. Client rendering can reduce server work but depends on the browser environment and asset availability. Self-hosting gives infrastructure control and puts scaling, security patches, queueing, and observability on your team. Cloud rendering reduces that operational burden but adds a service dependency and its own commercial terms.
Orshot credit accounting
Orshot packages rendering into plan credits. Its pricing page defines one image, one PDF page, or one video second as one credit. A multi-page PDF therefore consumes credits per page, while a 20-second video consumes 20 credits under that definition. Model your real mix rather than comparing only the headline monthly number.
Formats need verification
Do not assume that every listed export format is available in every execution path, or that an import preserves every effect. Make a proof of concept with representative templates and compare save/load behavior, supported assets, font substitution, responsive layout, permissions, export fidelity, and the complete edit-to-production-render path.

Pricing and total cost
| Product | Published starting price observed September 29, 2026 | Included allowance or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Polotno Grass Roots | $249/month or $2,490/year | Limited-scope license, subject to manual review; 60-day free trial on a development server subject to terms. |
| Polotno Self-serve | $899/month or $9,990/year | Base price covers one domain under one brand family. |
| Polotno Enterprise | Custom | Terms and scope negotiated with Polotno. |
| Orshot Launch | $39/month | Displayed starting selection includes 1,500 monthly render credits. |
| Orshot Grow | $160/month | Displayed starting selection includes 20,000 monthly render credits. |
| Orshot Scale | $349/month | Displayed starting selection includes 75,000 monthly render credits. |
Orshot also advertises 100 free monthly credits. Its plan page shows feature gates for downloads, webhooks, multi-tenancy, and custom asset-picker or control events, so confirm that the selected tier includes the exact embed behavior you require. Polotno’s license price is not directly comparable with Orshot’s SaaS fee: add engineering time, hosting, identity, storage, support, and rendering operations to a Polotno estimate, and compare those costs with Orshot’s quotas and hosted dependency.
Which product fits which team?
Choose Polotno when control is a requirement
- Your product has a React-oriented UI and needs editor panels that match an existing workflow.
- You must integrate a house authentication system, storage model, or asset catalog.
- You need control over deployment, data flows, or rendering infrastructure.
- Your roadmap depends on custom tools rather than only documented embed settings.
Budget for ongoing SDK integration and the surrounding systems Polotno leaves to you.
Choose Orshot when packaged hosting wins
- You want an iframe-based editor delivered without operating the editor backend.
- Per-user templates, assets, permissions, or multi-tenant experiences are central.
- Hosted rendering, webhooks, imports, and automation integrations fit your workflow.
- Your team accepts plan quotas and the limits of a hosted frame.
Confirm domain allowlists, CSP, event behavior, retention, and the plan’s feature gates before implementation.

A practical proof-of-concept checklist
- Use the same app shell, identity provider, and representative templates in both trials.
- Measure how a user creates, saves, reopens, duplicates, and shares a design.
- Test large images, custom fonts, video, multiple pages, and failure or timeout states.
- Verify tenant isolation and permission changes with two test accounts.
- Generate the production formats you actually sell or deliver, then inspect text, bleed, transparency, and pagination.
- Calculate monthly credits or infrastructure capacity from real edit and export volumes.
- Record every custom requirement that is impossible, expensive, or plan-gated in the chosen model.
Troubleshooting common integration problems
The Orshot frame is blank
Check the embed ID, allowed-domain configuration, HTTPS, iframe dimensions, and Content-Security-Policy frame directives. Browser developer tools will usually reveal a blocked frame or policy violation.
Events or exports do not arrive
Confirm that the wrapper version and callback names match the current integration guide, that your component remains mounted, and that the selected plan includes downloads or webhooks. Log the event payload before changing application state.
Polotno designs fail to save
Inspect the network request and authorization token, then verify that the design JSON and asset references are persisted atomically. A successful canvas edit does not prove that your API accepted the document.

Exports differ from the editor
Check fonts, remote assets, browser-only effects, page dimensions, and the selected rendering path. Reproduce with a minimal template, then add assets one at a time. For Orshot, also check credit availability; for Polotno, check the worker or Cloud Render configuration.
Multi-tenant data appears mixed
Do not rely on a visual user identifier alone. Enforce tenant authorization server-side, scope asset and design keys by tenant, and test cross-tenant IDs with an account that should receive a denial.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo for rendered page captures
If your workflow also needs screenshots of the finished editor, documentation pages, or customer previews, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server: cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can call its take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools through MCP.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS selectors, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF settings, caching, async jobs, bulk capture, and signed links.
