SpaceX launched Polaris Dawn on September 10, 2024, and the private crew returned safely five days later. The mission sent four people to a peak altitude of 1,408.1 kilometers, through portions of Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts, and conducted the first commercial astronaut spacewalk. It was a high-altitude technology and research flight—not a prolonged stay in the belts or a trip beyond Earth orbit.

The Polaris Program’s mission overview describes the flight’s objectives and milestones.
What Polaris Dawn was—and why it launched
Polaris Dawn was the first mission of the privately funded Polaris Program, associated with Jared Isaacman and SpaceX. Isaacman had previously commanded Inspiration4, the 2021 private orbital mission. Polaris Dawn went further in scope: it combined a high-altitude crewed flight, radiation and human-health research, a new spacesuit demonstration and an attempt to communicate with SpaceX’s Starlink network using optical links.

Why the launch date moved
The launch had been targeted for earlier dates, including August 26, before it flew on September 10. The schedule changed amid launch-campaign checks and weather and recovery considerations. Contemporaneous reporting by Axios attributed the final postponement to a helium leak and poor weather. That reporting is useful context, but it is more accurate to describe a series of schedule changes than to claim one officially established cause for every delay.
A record-setting Earth orbit
After launch from Kennedy Space Center, Falcon 9 placed Dragon Resilience in orbit. The spacecraft then raised its orbit to an eventual apogee—its farthest point from Earth—of 1,408.1 km. That was more than three times the roughly 400-km altitude of the International Space Station and surpassed the previous crewed Earth-orbit altitude record set by Gemini 11 in 1966.
The distinction matters: Polaris Dawn reached the highest altitude in Earth orbit, not the greatest distance humans have ever traveled from Earth. Apollo crews went much farther while traveling to and from the Moon. Polaris Dawn’s crew reached the farthest distance from Earth since the Apollo era, while remaining in Earth orbit. The spacecraft only spent a portion of the mission at its peak altitude before lowering its orbit for later operations.

What it means to pass through the Van Allen belts
The Van Allen belts are regions where Earth’s magnetic field traps energetic charged particles. They are not solid shells or visible walls. Their intensity and shape change, including in response to solar activity, and a spacecraft passing through them encounters elevated particle radiation. That radiation can affect electronics and increase exposure for people aboard. NASA’s Van Allen Probes mission studied how the belts behave; NASA has also documented how solar storms can temporarily alter radiation-belt conditions.
Polaris Dawn’s high, elliptical orbit crossed portions of the belts. The crew did not live in them throughout the five-day flight, and the mission was not a dedicated radiation-belt probe. Its orbit exposed the crew and spacecraft to a higher radiation environment than a typical low-Earth-orbit mission and gave researchers an opportunity to collect measurements using radiation monitors and crew dosimeters. The program’s science and research overview explains the measurement plan.
The spacewalk required depressurizing Dragon
On September 12, Isaacman and Gillis moved outside the spacecraft in newly developed SpaceX spacesuits. It was the first commercial astronaut spacewalk. Dragon does not have a conventional airlock, so the operation involved partially depressurizing the cabin; all four crew members wore the suits during the procedure, even though only Isaacman and Gillis went outside. The suits remained connected to Dragon for life support rather than functioning as independent spacecraft.

This made the event more than a demonstration of movement outside a capsule. It tested suit mobility and communications, crew procedures, and the process of depressurizing and repressurizing a spacecraft without a traditional airlock. Those lessons may inform future commercial vehicles or stations. They do not, by themselves, establish that this suit design is ready for lunar or Martian surface operations.
Nearly 40 experiments—and a communications test
The mission carried nearly 40 experiments selected with more than 30 partner institutions. The work covered radiation exposure and astronaut observations of light flashes, as well as human physiology and medical monitoring. Areas of study included vision and brain changes, bone and blood health, sleep, motion sickness and immune-related measures. Other investigations involved molecular biology and genomics, plant growth and pharmaceutical stability. Researchers collected information in orbit and after the crew returned.
Polaris Dawn also tested laser-based optical communications between Dragon and Starlink satellites. The program reported that the crew sent the first post on X via Starlink from space. This was an in-space communications demonstration—not ordinary consumer Starlink service operating inside Dragon.

What the early radiation results showed
In April 2025, the mission team shared initial findings that put the crew’s total radiation dose at an estimated 8 millisieverts (mSv), with about half attributed to passages through the Van Allen belts. The team compared that dose to roughly 20 days on the ISS. It also reported that crew members saw radiation-induced light flashes during a belt passage.
These are preliminary, mission-specific findings, not a definitive assessment of long-term health effects. Dose depends on a flight’s path, shielding, time at altitude, solar conditions and the instruments used; 8 mSv should not be treated as a standard dose for all Dragon missions. Four people on a flight lasting about five days cannot establish the long-term effects of radiation or microgravity for a much larger population or longer missions. The mission team’s initial findings report also describes early observations involving bone, brain, eye, blood, sleep, motion sickness and immune-related measures. These, too, remain early results.
How risky was the mission?
The mission involved real hazards: a higher-radiation orbit, a spacewalk using a new suit design, a depressurized cabin without a traditional airlock, and the demands of reentry and splashdown. A successful landing does not mean the risk was negligible, nor does one flight prove the systems safe for every future mission.

The crew trained extensively, including in Dragon simulations, centrifuge and altitude training, survival and high-performance aircraft training, zero-gravity flights, and underwater or suspended spacesuit practice. The crew and spacecraft returned safely, with no crew injury reported in the mission account. That outcome followed preparation and operational work; it should not be confused with a general guarantee about future flights.
What Polaris Dawn did—and did not—prove
- It did: set a human Earth-orbit altitude record, demonstrate a commercial spacesuit and Dragon spacewalk procedure, and gather radiation, health and communications data on a private crewed mission.
- It did not: send people beyond Earth orbit, keep them immersed in the radiation belts for an extended period, or establish that long-term human exposure there is safe.
- It also did not: demonstrate consumer Starlink service inside a spacecraft or qualify the spacesuit for lunar or Mars missions.
The crew splashed down off Florida on September 15, 2024, completing nearly five days in orbit. Polaris Dawn’s significance lies in bringing several challenging capabilities together—private crewed flight, high-altitude research, commercial EVA and optical communications—while producing early data for work that will require further flights and analysis. The return announcement records the mission’s completion and reported milestones.
