The Plugable TBT4-HUB3C is worth considering if you need more Thunderbolt or USB-C ports—not if you want a one-cable dock with built-in HDMI, Ethernet, card readers, and several USB-A ports. It provides three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, up to 60W host charging, and support for up to two 4K displays at 60Hz under compatible host conditions. Its main drawbacks are the required power brick, limited legacy connectivity, display-adapter needs, and a 40Gbps upstream link shared by connected devices. Plugable’s official store showed it at $175.99 USD on August 16, 2026, against a listed $249.99 price; that dated price is a snapshot, not a guaranteed current offer.
What the TBT4-HUB3C does—and what it does not
This is a powered Thunderbolt 4 hub: it takes one connection to a compatible computer and adds three downstream Thunderbolt/USB-C ports for peripherals such as fast storage, displays, and networking adapters. It is not a conventional all-in-one docking station. It has no built-in Ethernet, SD or microSD reader, audio jack, or native HDMI or DisplayPort socket.
That distinction shapes the buying decision. A hub is useful when you need more high-speed ports and prefer to choose your own adapters. A dock is the more convenient choice when you want fixed video outputs and a broad collection of desk peripherals connected with fewer accessories. Plugable’s product page lists three downstream Thunderbolt ports and an included USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Windows Central’s review describes a documented configuration with one USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port as well. Check the exact retail-box contents and port layout for your region and purchase, since listings and older reviews may differ.

Ports, power, and physical design
The host computer connects to the single Thunderbolt 4 port on the front. The three downstream Thunderbolt ports are on the rear, alongside the power input; they are for peripherals and are not interchangeable with the host port. A status indicator and security-lock slot are also noted in Windows Central’s review. The compact enclosure takes less space than a full dock, but the external power adapter and attached cables make it a desk-oriented device rather than a portable, bus-powered hub.
The included power adapter is mandatory: the hub cannot operate from power supplied by the host alone, according to Plugable’s support guidance.

The ratings describe supported capabilities, not a promise that every computer or connected device will reach them. A single 40Gbps host link connects the hub to the computer, so the three downstream ports do not each have an independent, uncontended 40Gbps path to the host.
Compatibility depends on the computer’s port
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guaranteed set of features. A computer’s USB-C port may support USB 3.x, USB4, DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB Power Delivery, Thunderbolt, or only some of these. Check the computer maker’s specifications for the exact port before buying; do not infer Thunderbolt performance from the connector alone.

For Thunderbolt 3 systems, Plugable’s compatibility guidance identifies conditions under which certain computers can expose downstream ports as Thunderbolt 3: an Intel Titan Ridge host controller, a DCH Thunderbolt host-controller driver newer than 1.41.613.1, and internal Thunderbolt NVM firmware version 41 or higher. Treat these as Plugable’s documented conditions for particular systems, not a universal guarantee for every Thunderbolt 3 computer.
Plugable says that supported Windows and macOS hosts normally do not require a separate driver installation. That does not rule out operating-system, GPU, chipset, firmware, or Thunderbolt security updates when troubleshooting. See its driver guidance.
Displays: capable on paper, conditional in practice
Plugable specifies support for up to two 4K displays at 60Hz or one 8K display at 30Hz, subject to host, operating system, GPU, adapter, and monitor capabilities. Windows Central reported reaching two 4K displays at 60Hz on its Thunderbolt 4 Windows test host; it also observed lower maximum resolution in some Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and ordinary USB-C scenarios. Those are review-unit observations, not guarantees for every system.
There is no built-in HDMI or DisplayPort output. The included USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can serve one compatible HDMI display; a second HDMI monitor will generally need another suitable adapter, while a monitor with USB-C or DisplayPort input may use an appropriate cable or adapter instead. Confirm the adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate, and include the cost of any additional adapter in the comparison with a dock.

Mac buyers should check the external-display limit for their exact model and chip. macOS does not handle Windows-style MST extended displays in the same way, and base-model Apple Silicon Macs can have strict native display limits. Do not assume that attaching two monitors to this hub will give a Mac two independent extended desktops; confirm the Mac model and the intended display arrangement first.
Storage and other high-bandwidth devices
A Thunderbolt SSD, multiple external drives, a 10GbE adapter, capture hardware, or an audio interface can all make use of the downstream ports, but the total workload still travels over the single host connection. Concurrent storage transfers and display traffic share available bandwidth. Protocol overhead, PCIe allocation, enclosure and drive limits, cable quality, and thermal behavior also affect real throughput.
Windows Central reported using a 4K display, keyboard, external SSD, and SD-card-reader hub without apparent performance problems, then adding a second 4K display while retaining 60Hz on both. That is useful evidence of a practical setup on one review system, not a controlled benchmark or a promise of identical performance on other hosts.
One USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, rated up to 10Gbps in the Windows Central review’s documented configuration, is not enough for a desk full of legacy accessories. Keyboards, mice, webcams, printers, microphones, and flash drives may require an additional USB hub. Plugable documents using its USBC-AF3 adapter for USB-A peripherals in its USB-A compatibility guidance; an adapter consumes one of the hub’s scarce downstream USB-C/Thunderbolt connections and does not create a set of native USB-A ports.

Charging: 60W is a ceiling, not a universal laptop supply
The hub can offer up to 60W to a host, but the computer must accept charging through its Thunderbolt or USB-C port, and the hub must be connected to AC power. Plugable notes that not every Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB-C system supports charging through that port; see its host-charging guidance.
Three things matter: the hub’s maximum output, the laptop’s charging acceptance, and the laptop’s power demand in actual use. Many ultraportables can work well within 60W, while a laptop designed for a 90W, 100W, or higher adapter may charge slowly, merely maintain its charge, or discharge during demanding CPU or GPU work. Each downstream Thunderbolt port can also provide up to 15W for compatible peripherals.

Connect it in the right order
- Connect the included power adapter to the hub and then to an AC outlet.
- Connect the included Thunderbolt 4 cable from the hub’s front host port to a confirmed Thunderbolt or USB4 port on the computer.
- Attach displays and peripherals to the three downstream ports, using the required display adapters or cables.
- Approve a Thunderbolt security prompt if the operating system presents one.
- If a device is not detected, install relevant operating-system, chipset, GPU, or Thunderbolt firmware updates, then test one peripheral at a time.
Plugable documents a solid white indicator as meaning the hub is powered and green as meaning it is connected to a compatible host on its product page.
If the hub does not power on
- Check that the adapter is fully seated in the hub and its cable is seated in the adapter.
- Try a known-working AC outlet and use the included adapter.
- Remember that host power alone cannot run this hub.
If the computer does not detect it
- Verify that the computer is connected to the front host port, not one of the downstream ports; Plugable confirms the host-port location here.
- Confirm the computer’s port supports Thunderbolt or the required USB4 features, and fully reseat the cable.
- Check for a pending Thunderbolt security approval, then update system firmware and operating-system components.
- Try a certified Thunderbolt cable known to work with the devices, or cold-reboot the computer with the hub disconnected before reconnecting it.
If the second display fails
- Check the computer’s native external-display limit, especially on a Mac.
- Confirm the host’s GPU and port support the required resolution and refresh rate, and that the adapter is suitable.
- On Windows, check the display arrangement and MST support; on USB-C-only hosts, confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode capability.
- Test each monitor and downstream port separately before adding both screens.
A second-display failure does not by itself show that the hub is defective: the host, adapter, cable, operating system, or monitor can be the limiting part of the chain.

If storage disconnects or goes to sleep
Check the drive or enclosure cable, its firmware, host sleep settings, and whether several high-bandwidth devices are active at once. A downstream USB hub and its attached devices add another link to the chain. Plugable’s product support forum includes user reports about drive sleep, display reconnection, and device detection on Macs. These reports identify useful troubleshooting cases but do not establish a failure rate.
If the laptop charges slowly or not at all
Confirm that the computer supports USB-C or Thunderbolt charging and that the hub has AC power. Compare the laptop’s power requirement with the hub’s 60W maximum, and check whether heavy workloads explain slow charging or battery drain.
Alternatives: compare the ports you will actually use

The listed prices above are dated observations, not guaranteed current prices. A Thunderbolt 5 label alone does not make an upgrade worthwhile for a Thunderbolt 4 laptop with modest peripherals. Conversely, a full dock can cost less overall than assembling the adapters and secondary hubs needed to make a hub serve as one.
Who should buy the TBT4-HUB3C?
Consider it if your computer has Thunderbolt 4 or capable USB4, you specifically need additional high-speed Thunderbolt/USB-C connections, and your desk setup is built around fast storage, networking adapters, capture gear, or USB-C displays. It is more attractive if you already own suitable display cables and adapters, 60W is adequate for the laptop, and the price is meaningfully below a dock or newer-generation alternative.
Choose another solution if you need Ethernet, SD cards, several USB-A devices, built-in HDMI or DisplayPort, or more than 60W of host charging. It is also a poor fit if the computer has only ordinary USB-C and its video, charging, or data capabilities are not confirmed. At the August 16, 2026 observed price of $175.99, buyers should compare it with the OWC and CalDigit hub options and with full docks before paying for a port layout they may not need.
