Choose Playwright for a new web end-to-end suite when you want an integrated runner, automatic waiting, isolated browser contexts, tracing and first-party projects for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Choose Selenium when WebDriver standards, Selenium Grid, branded-browser coverage, an existing suite or established remote infrastructure matter more. Neither is universally “better,” and no reliable source-backed benchmark justifies a blanket speed winner. The right choice follows your languages, browser distributions, CI architecture and migration cost.
Playwright vs. Selenium at a glance
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Primary model | Integrated browser automation API and Playwright Test workflow | W3C WebDriver protocol with bindings and optional Selenium Server/Grid |
| Official language support | TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, .NET and Java; core automation is shared, while test-runner integration differs by language (Playwright language documentation) | WebDriver bindings and ecosystem integrations; select the binding and test framework that match your stack (Selenium WebDriver documentation) |
| Built-in workflow | Playwright Test includes actionability waits, retrying assertions, isolation, parallelism and trace viewing (Playwright overview) | WebDriver APIs are composed with your chosen test runner and waiting strategy |
| Browser projects | Bundled Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, plus installed Chrome and Edge channels; bundled engines are not identical to branded Safari or Firefox | Browser-specific WebDriver support, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari sections (Selenium supported browsers) |
| Distributed execution | Parallel projects and sharding across machines | Selenium Server and Grid for remote, multi-machine and multi-platform execution |
| Browser events | Playwright event and network APIs in its own automation model | WebDriver BiDi adds bidirectional WebSocket event streaming for network requests, console messages and JavaScript errors |
Use the table as a shortlist, not a performance claim. Test duration depends on application behavior, locator quality, browser startup, CI resources and parallelism.
What Playwright gives you
An integrated runner for web tests
Playwright Test supplies fixtures, projects, retries, parallel workers, test isolation and trace files in one documented workflow. A browser context gives each test a clean session without launching a separate operating-system browser for every case. Traces can record actions, snapshots and network information for failure diagnosis.

Automatic waiting and assertions
Before an action, Playwright checks conditions such as visibility, stability, enabled state and whether an element can receive events. Its assertions retry until the expected state or timeout. This reduces explicit sleep calls, but it does not repair ambiguous locators or application defects. Prefer role, label and test-id locators over brittle CSS or XPath.

Projects and browser engines
You can define Chromium, Firefox and WebKit projects, vary viewport and device settings, and use installed branded Chrome or Edge channels. Playwright’s WebKit is not branded Safari, and its Firefox build is patched rather than the branded Firefox distribution. For Safari-specific behavior—especially media, OS integration or enterprise policies—run tests on the actual Safari/macOS combination your users rely on. Playwright browser binaries are versioned with the package, so upgrading Playwright may require installing the matching browsers (browser documentation).
Where Playwright fits best
- Greenfield web applications where one team controls test code and CI.
- Teams that want traces, retries, fixtures and parallel projects without assembling separate libraries.
- Suites that need Chromium, Firefox and WebKit checks but can validate branded Safari separately.
- TypeScript/JavaScript teams that want Playwright Test’s complete runner experience.
What Selenium gives you
A standards-based protocol and broad ecosystem
Selenium’s official documentation states that “WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation.” The browser driver model lets client bindings communicate with local browsers or a remote Selenium Server. This standards orientation is useful when your organization requires WebDriver-compatible infrastructure, browser vendors’ documented capabilities or tooling shared across languages.
Grid and remote machines
Selenium Grid is designed to distribute tests across machines and platforms. If your CI already provisions Grid nodes, routes sessions, records artifacts and manages browser versions, that operational investment has real migration value. Replacing it with a different execution model can cost more than changing test syntax.
WebDriver BiDi
Selenium is not limited to request-and-response commands. WebDriver BiDi provides a bidirectional WebSocket connection for streaming browser events such as network activity, console output and JavaScript errors. Check browser and binding support for the specific BiDi features you need rather than assuming every event works identically everywhere.
Where Selenium fits best
- Large existing suites with stable page objects, reporting and custom extensions.
- Organizations standardized on Selenium Grid or remote WebDriver services.
- Requirements for branded browser distributions and operating-system combinations that need direct validation.
- Teams whose language, test runner or internal tooling is already built around Selenium bindings.
Language and test-runner choice
Start with the language your production and test engineers already maintain. Playwright officially supports TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, .NET and Java; its documentation notes that core browser automation features are supported in all languages, while testing-ecosystem integration differs (supported languages). JavaScript and TypeScript users can use the first-party Playwright Test runner. In other languages, choose the documented integration that fits your existing runner and reporting.
Selenium’s WebDriver API is intentionally lower-level. You can pair it with the runner, dependency injection, fixtures, reporting and assertion library your organization already uses. That flexibility is an advantage for mature platforms, but you must define conventions for waits, isolation, retries, screenshots and diagnostics.

Waiting, reliability and debugging
Why Playwright often needs less synchronization code
Actionability checks and retrying assertions cover common races between a test and a changing DOM. Context isolation limits state leakage, and traces show what happened around a failure. These defaults improve maintainability when used with stable locators; they are not proof that every Playwright suite is more reliable.

How to build equivalent discipline in Selenium
Use explicit waits for meaningful conditions, avoid fixed sleeps, isolate accounts and data, and capture browser logs, screenshots and page source on failure. Selenium can implement robust patterns, but the project must choose and enforce them through fixtures, helper libraries and code review. A poorly designed Selenium suite can be flaky; a poorly designed Playwright suite can be flaky too.
Retries and parallelism require test design
Retries can reveal intermittent failures, but they can also hide product defects. Run retries only with clear reporting of the original failure. Parallel workers require independent data, unique accounts or transactional cleanup. Measure queue time, browser startup and server capacity before increasing worker counts.
Cross-browser fidelity: answer the Safari question precisely
Playwright’s three named projects represent browser engines, not a promise of identical branded browsers. Its WebKit project is not Safari. Bundled Chromium is not necessarily the same build, policies or codecs as installed Chrome; the documentation describes differences between bundled binaries and branded channels. Selenium’s browser documentation covers browser-specific setup and capabilities, but a browser name alone does not establish equal feature support or effort across operating systems.
Make a browser matrix before choosing:
- Exact browser brand and channel (for example, Chrome Stable, Edge Enterprise or Safari).
- Operating system and architecture.
- Media codecs, WebGL, fonts, proxies and enterprise policies.
- Authentication, certificates, extensions and third-party integrations.
- Whether the test runs locally, in a container, on a hosted device or on physical macOS hardware.
Use Playwright projects for fast engine coverage, then add runs on the branded combinations that affect revenue or compliance. Use Selenium when direct WebDriver access to those combinations and your existing Grid are the decisive requirements.
Remote execution and CI architecture
Playwright
Playwright documents parallel projects and sharding across machines. You manage workers, browser installation, artifacts and service capacity in your CI system. Pin the Playwright package and install its matching browser binaries; cache them deliberately and invalidate the cache when versions change.

Selenium
Selenium Server and Grid provide a session-routing model for machines and platforms. This is useful when browsers are maintained by a central platform team or tests must fan out across a heterogeneous fleet. Budget for node health, driver/browser compatibility, queueing, video and log retention.
For either framework, compare total pipeline time rather than a single test’s command latency. Record cold and warm startup, queue delay, execution, artifact upload and rerun time under the same browser matrix.
Should you migrate an existing Selenium suite?
Do not migrate solely because a blog calls one framework faster. Inventory your suite first:

- Measure flaky tests, median and tail duration, queue time, rerun rate and debugging time.
- Identify custom WebDriver commands, page objects, reporting hooks and accessibility or network tooling.
- Choose one representative user journey and build a Playwright proof of concept beside the Selenium test.
- Compare failure diagnostics, browser fidelity, CI cost and developer maintenance over several runs.
- Migrate by boundary—new features first or one product area at a time—while retaining Selenium coverage for browsers or infrastructure not yet matched.
Migration is attractive when the current suite spends substantial effort on synchronization and diagnostics, and Playwright’s projects match your required engines. Staying is rational when Grid, branded-browser coverage, internal bindings or a large stable suite dominate the economics.
Common failure modes and fixes
“Browser executable is missing” in Playwright
Install the browser versions associated with your package (for example, through Playwright’s documented install command), and keep package and binary versions aligned. In CI, verify that the cache key includes the Playwright version.
Tests pass in Chromium but fail in Safari
Do not treat WebKit as Safari. Reproduce on the supported Safari/macOS environment, then investigate codecs, permissions, fonts, viewport behavior and vendor-specific APIs.

Flaky Selenium element interactions
Replace sleeps with explicit waits for a state that proves the next action is safe. Check for stale references after re-rendering, overlays intercepting clicks and incorrect frame or window context. Capture logs and a screenshot at the failure point.
Remote sessions cannot start
Verify server URL, authentication, browser capability names, driver/browser compatibility, node capacity and proxy rules. A local success does not prove the remote Grid is healthy.
Parallel runs corrupt test data
Give each worker isolated records, accounts or namespaces. Make cleanup idempotent and ensure retries do not reuse state left by a failed attempt.

Cost, maintenance and performance decisions
Framework license price is rarely the largest cost. Include CI minutes, browser and driver maintenance, Grid nodes, hosted-device usage, engineer time diagnosing flakes, artifact storage and migration work. Playwright’s bundled binaries simplify matching package versions but consume cache and image space. Selenium’s distributed fleet can reuse existing capacity but requires ongoing node and driver governance.
Best Value
Run a small controlled comparison using identical journeys, browsers, data and CI limits. Report the conditions and distributions you measured; do not publish a universal speed ranking from one machine.
Decision checklist
- Choose Playwright when a new web suite benefits from its integrated runner, automatic waiting, traces, isolation and engine projects.
- Choose Selenium when WebDriver standards, Grid, branded-browser/OS coverage or an established suite are central.
- Use both temporarily when migration risk is high or each covers a different browser or infrastructure requirement.
- Validate either choice against real browsers, CI topology, test data and failure diagnostics—not marketing speed claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright test real Safari?
Playwright’s WebKit project is not branded Safari. For Safari-specific behavior, add tests on the actual Safari and macOS combination your users depend on.
Is Selenium obsolete because WebDriver is slower?
No. Selenium WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation, and WebDriver BiDi adds event streaming. No comparable, source-backed benchmark establishes a universal speed winner.
Can Playwright replace Selenium Grid?
Playwright supports parallel projects and sharding, while Selenium Grid provides a documented remote machine and platform model. Whether to replace Grid depends on your fleet, browser requirements and migration cost.
Which should a new TypeScript project use?
Start with Playwright if its integrated runner, tracing, isolation and browser projects fit your requirements. Confirm branded-browser and CI needs before committing.
