Playwright is usually the better starting point for a new, end-to-end test suite when you want Chromium, Firefox and WebKit coverage, an integrated runner, parallel execution and built-in debugging. Selenium remains the safer choice when your organization already depends on WebDriver, needs a broad browser-automation ecosystem, or wants to keep browser control separate from its test runner. For scraping, neither tool grants permission to collect data: check the target site’s terms and access controls first.
Playwright and Selenium solve overlapping problems
Both projects drive real browsers, so either can navigate pages, fill forms, click controls, download files and verify results. The important difference is the product boundary. Playwright presents browser automation together with Playwright Test, a coordinated runner with waiting, assertions, tracing, parallelism and reporting. Selenium is a browser-automation ecosystem; you normally choose a test runner, assertion library and reporting stack around WebDriver.
That distinction affects architecture more than the ability to click a button. A team with an existing Selenium grid, language bindings and CI conventions may gain little by switching. A new JavaScript or TypeScript project that wants one integrated workflow may avoid substantial assembly work with Playwright.

| Requirement | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New end-to-end suite with built-in runner features | Playwright | Playwright Test supplies projects, parallel runs, auto-waiting, tracing, UI mode, debug mode and an HTML report. |
| Existing WebDriver/Grid investment | Selenium | Keeping the current ecosystem can reduce migration and maintenance work. |
| Chromium, Firefox and WebKit in one documented API | Playwright | Those engines are documented as supported options, with branded Chrome and Edge channels also available. |
| Browser automation separated from test orchestration | Selenium | Selenium supplies WebDriver control while your chosen runner organizes tests. |
| Repetitive browser task or permitted collection without an API | Either, based on language and site behavior | Both can automate pages; stability, access rules and rendering requirements matter more than a blanket winner. |
Browser and engine coverage
Playwright: three engines plus branded channels
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox and WebKit support through a single API. Its browser guide also covers branded Chrome and Edge channels. WebKit is the browser engine used by Safari, but it is not the same as running Apple’s Safari application; validate any Safari-specific behavior on the actual environments your users need.
Each Playwright release expects specific browser binaries. The Playwright CLI installs matching binaries, which makes a fresh setup predictable but adds a version-management step to local machines and CI. Upgrading the package and installing its browser revisions should be treated as one change.
Selenium: choose the browser and driver path deliberately
Selenium controls browsers through WebDriver implementations. The exact browser matrix depends on the drivers, bindings and infrastructure you select. Selenium’s JavaScript documentation says Selenium Manager can automatically handle browser-driver installation, but driver and browser compatibility remains an operational concern. Confirm current support for your language and browser versions before standardizing a pipeline.
Runner, waiting and debugging
What Playwright Test provides
Playwright Test runs headlessly by default and can execute configured browser projects in parallel. Its documented workflow includes UI mode for interactive exploration, a debug mode and an HTML report. Playwright’s automation layer also includes auto-waiting and assertions designed for web-test synchronization, reducing many hand-written sleep calls.
A minimal TypeScript test looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout page is reachable', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/checkout/i);
await expect(page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Pay' })).toBeVisible();
});
Run it with npx playwright test. Use the runner’s project configuration to target different browsers, and open the generated HTML report after a CI failure. Keep authentication state files out of source control: Playwright warns that saved state can contain cookies and headers capable of impersonating an account.
How Selenium fits into a test stack
Selenium WebDriver supplies browser commands; your runner supplies test discovery, retries, assertions, parallel scheduling and reports. That separation is useful when your organization already has a mature framework. It also means you must define conventions that Playwright Test bundles for you.
A small JavaScript example using Selenium WebDriver is:
const { Builder, By, until } = require('selenium-webdriver');
(async function () {
const driver = await new Builder().forBrowser('chrome').build();
try {
await driver.get('https://example.com/checkout');
const pay = await driver.wait(
until.elementLocated(By.css('button[data-action="pay"]')),
10000
);
console.log(await pay.isDisplayed());
} finally {
await driver.quit();
}
})();
Install the JavaScript binding with npm install selenium-webdriver. Put this code inside your selected test runner for assertions, fixtures and reporting rather than treating a one-off script as a complete test system.

Playwright documents JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java and .NET. Core browser-automation concepts are shared, but testing integration differs by language: the project recommends Playwright Test for Node.js and a Pytest plugin for Python end-to-end testing. Choose the binding that matches your team’s existing libraries and CI skills.
Selenium also has multiple language bindings and a large WebDriver ecosystem. The documentation reviewed here establishes JavaScript usage and Selenium Manager behavior, but not a complete, current language matrix. Verify the binding, runner and browser versions you intend to use rather than assuming every feature is identical across languages.
Is Playwright easier to set up?
For a new project, Playwright’s setup is coherent: install the package, run its browser-install command, create a test and use the integrated runner. The trade-off is that framework upgrades can require matching browser-binary updates.
Selenium setup can be equally straightforward for a small script, especially where Selenium Manager supplies a compatible driver. Larger deployments may involve a grid, remote nodes, browser images and a separately chosen test runner. That flexibility is valuable, but it creates more decisions to document and maintain.
Can you use either tool for web scraping?
Yes, both can automate pages that require JavaScript rendering, scrolling, login flows or downloads. Selenium’s documentation explicitly lists web scraping as a possible browser-automation use case while warning that some sites prohibit scraping and others block Selenium. Playwright exposes navigation, page and network APIs that can support scripted collection, but the pages reviewed do not present it as a dedicated scraping product.
Check permission before code
- Read the site’s terms, robots guidance and published access rules.
- Prefer an official API when one exists.
- Collect only the fields and frequency you need, and identify your client where required.
- Stop when the site presents a bot check, CAPTCHA or explicit denial; do not attempt to bypass it.
Rendering and stability choices
Use browser automation when the data appears only after JavaScript execution or interaction. For static pages, an HTTP client is usually simpler and lighter. Select locators that reflect stable attributes, wait for a meaningful element or network condition, and record failures so a layout change does not silently produce incomplete data.
Network control, authentication and evidence
Playwright’s network APIs can monitor and modify HTTP and HTTPS requests, including XHR and fetch traffic. That helps test applications with mocked responses or diagnose a failing request. Selenium can automate the visible browser workflow, while deeper network inspection generally depends on the browser, driver and additional tooling you select.
For authenticated tests, isolate accounts and rotate credentials. Reused browser state is convenient, but any file containing cookies or authorization headers must be treated as a secret. Capture screenshots, videos or HTML reports only where their contents can be stored safely.

Common failure modes and fixes
Browser or driver will not launch
- Playwright: install the browser binaries required by the installed package, then repeat the run in the same environment.
- Selenium: check browser-driver compatibility, allow Selenium Manager to resolve the driver where supported, or pin a known-good browser image in CI.
Tests fail intermittently
Replace fixed sleeps with a wait for a locator, navigation state or application signal. Ensure each test gets isolated data and a fresh browser context or driver session. Parallel execution can expose shared-account and shared-record collisions that serial runs hide.
Elements are present but not actionable
Wait for visibility and enabled state, verify that the correct frame or window is active, and prefer role, label or stable data attributes over long CSS paths. A successful locator query does not prove that an overlay has stopped intercepting clicks.
CI passes locally but fails remotely
Compare browser versions, installed binaries, fonts, timezone, viewport and environment variables. Run headed or debug mode once to observe the failure, then retain a report, screenshot or trace as the diagnostic artifact.
A scraper receives a CAPTCHA or blocked response
Treat the response as an access decision, not a selector bug. Check permission, reduce request frequency, use the published API and contact the site owner when appropriate. Do not design automation to evade a challenge.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Neither the reviewed documentation nor this comparison establishes a universal speed or reliability winner. Browser startup, page weight, network distance, parallel-worker count and application behavior dominate real runs. Measure your own critical flows with the same CI images and concurrency you will operate.
Best Value
Reuse a browser process when safe, create isolated contexts or sessions per test, and close every browser in teardown. Cache Playwright’s matching browser binaries in CI. For Selenium, pin compatible browser images and monitor driver updates. Keep retries low enough that a real regression is not hidden by repeated attempts.
Capturing test and scraping evidence without maintaining a browser
If your workflow only needs a clean image or PDF of a URL after automation, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan listed here.
You can keep the browser-based method above for interactions, then call ScreenshotNeo for a final artifact. Its API supports full-page images, selected elements, device and viewport settings, JavaScript, custom CSS, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, PDFs and asynchronous jobs. Every response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
Or skip the browser setup:
Use one request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright run Safari itself?
Playwright documents WebKit and branded Chrome and Edge channels. WebKit coverage is not the same as running Apple’s Safari application, so validate Safari-specific behavior on real Safari environments.
Should I migrate an established Selenium suite?
Not automatically. Compare the migration cost with the value of Playwright’s integrated runner, browser projects and debugging workflow, while preserving Selenium when its grid, bindings and team practices already meet your needs.
