Use Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot tool for three distinct jobs: the current viewport (the default), one element selected by snapshot ref or CSS selector, or the entire scrollable page with fullPage: true. Add filename to control where the image is saved, choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and use scale to control CSS-pixel versus device-pixel resolution. Full-page capture and an element target are mutually exclusive, so choose the capture scope before calling the tool.
Choose the capture mode first
The official Playwright MCP reference defines the tool as able to “Capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page.” The screenshot tool reference exposes those modes through the request you send from your MCP client.
| Goal | Parameters | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Current viewport | No target and no fullPage |
What is currently visible in the browser viewport |
| One element | target set to an element ref or unique CSS selector |
A tight image of that element |
| Entire page | fullPage: true, with no target |
The full scrollable document |
Do not send target together with fullPage: true. Treat them as separate operations rather than expecting the tool to crop an element out of a full-page render.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Capture the current viewport with MCP
After your MCP client has a Playwright browser session open, call the tool with an empty object or only the options you need. The default is a viewport screenshot.

{
"name": "browser_take_screenshot",
"arguments": {}
}
This is useful for checking the visible state of a dialog, chart, canvas, or responsive layout. It captures what the browser is displaying now; it does not automatically scroll through the page.
Capture a full scrollable page
Save a complete page under a useful name
Set fullPage to true and provide a descriptive filename:
{
"name": "browser_take_screenshot",
"arguments": {
"fullPage": true,
"filename": "homepage-full.webp"
}
}
A name such as pricing-desktop-full.png records both the page and the state you intended to review. Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. If you omit filename, Playwright MCP creates a timestamped file such as page-1712345678901.png in its output directory. When a filename extension is present, the extension determines the format; without one, PNG is the fallback.

When a full-page image is the right choice
- Reviewing a landing page from header to footer.
- Documenting a long visual bug without stitching screenshots yourself.
- Checking lazy-loaded images and sections that appear below the fold after the page has loaded.
Very long documents can create large image files and take longer to encode than a viewport capture. If you only need a component, use an element target instead of producing a tall page image.
Capture one element
Target by an accessibility snapshot ref
Use browser_snapshot when you need to understand page structure. Its accessibility-oriented tree assigns refs to controls and regions. Pass a ref from the current snapshot as the screenshot target:

{
"name": "browser_take_screenshot",
"arguments": {
"target": "ref=sidebar",
"filename": "sidebar.png"
}
}
The exact ref is page-specific; copy the value returned by your current snapshot rather than inventing one. Snapshot refs are valid only for that snapshot. If the page changes, take a new snapshot and obtain a fresh ref. The snapshot documentation explains this lifecycle at playwright.dev/mcp/snapshots.
Target by a unique CSS selector
If a stable, unique selector identifies the component, pass that selector as target:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
{
"name": "browser_take_screenshot",
"arguments": {
"target": "main article[data-testid='release-notes']",
"filename": "release-notes.webp"
}
}
Prefer a selector that resolves to exactly one element. If it matches several nodes, refine it with an ID, data attribute, semantic container, or other unique condition. Element capture is particularly useful for cards, dashboards, invoices, charts, and components that would be awkward to crop from a full-page image.
Choose the image format and resolution
PNG, JPEG, and WebP
Playwright MCP supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Put the desired extension in filename:
screen.pngfor lossless output and sharp text or interface edges.screen.jpegfor a commonly supported photographic format.screen.webpfor a modern compressed image format.
If you omit the extension and do not provide a separate type setting, PNG is used. Use a consistent format when comparing captures over time so that encoding differences do not obscure visual changes.

CSS scale versus device scale
The scale option accepts "css" or "device":
{
"name": "browser_take_screenshot",
"arguments": {
"filename": "hero-device.png",
"scale": "device"
}
}
scale: "css"favors CSS-pixel dimensions, which makes output easier to compare with layout measurements and design specs.scale: "device"uses the device pixel ratio for higher-resolution output on high-density displays.
Pick CSS scale when pixel dimensions need to match browser layout values. Pick device scale when the image will be inspected at high zoom or placed in a high-density document.

Screenshot or structured snapshot?
A screenshot is a visual artifact. It is appropriate for checking spacing, colors, charts, canvas content, responsive composition, or a visual regression. It is not the preferred representation for locating controls or operating the page. The Playwright MCP documentation explicitly distinguishes screenshots as something to look at rather than act on: use the screenshot reference for that guidance.
For text, semantics, and interaction, call browser_snapshot. The resulting accessibility tree lets you identify buttons, links, headings, and regions, then use their current refs with interaction tools. A practical workflow is:
- Load or navigate to the page.
- Call
browser_snapshotto inspect structure and obtain current refs. - Interact with the page using those refs.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotafter the page reaches the visual state you want to document.
Do not use an old ref after navigation, a significant re-render, or another change that replaced the snapshot tree.
Save screenshots with the Playwright API instead of MCP
If you are writing Playwright code directly, the API has equivalent operations. The official API documentation is available in the Playwright screenshots source.

Viewport and full-page files
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-full.png', fullPage: true });
One element with a locator
const chart = page.locator('[data-testid="revenue-chart"]');
await chart.screenshot({ path: 'revenue-chart.webp' });
Return bytes for post-processing
const bytes = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
// Pass `bytes` to your image pipeline, attach it to a report, or store it yourself.
Passing a path writes a file. Omitting it returns screenshot bytes, which is useful when another part of your program handles storage, hashing, upload, or image analysis.
Make captures reliable
Wait for the visual state you intend to record
A screenshot records the moment the command runs. If fonts, data, animations, or images are still changing, the file may not represent the finished state. In your MCP workflow, perform the page interactions and waits before calling the screenshot tool. For code, wait for a meaningful locator or application state rather than relying only on a fixed sleep:
await page.locator('[data-testid="dashboard"]')
.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
Keep capture dimensions intentional
Viewport screenshots depend on the browser’s current viewport and device settings. Record those settings in the filename or surrounding test metadata when reproducibility matters. A full-page capture can still vary if content is generated dynamically, personalized, or loaded after the first render.
Control file naming
Use names that encode page, state, viewport, and format, for example checkout-error-mobile-device.png. Avoid overwriting a useful artifact accidentally; include a build number or timestamp when captures are produced in a loop.

Cause: the request used the default viewport mode. Fix: send fullPage: true and remove target. If you actually need one component, keep target and omit fullPage.

The tool rejects a request containing both options
Cause: full-page and element capture are incompatible modes. Fix: issue two separate calls, or decide whether the deliverable is the full document or a single element.
The element target cannot be found
Cause: a selector matched nothing, matched multiple elements, or a snapshot ref became stale after the page changed. Fix: take a fresh browser_snapshot, verify the element is present and visible, then use the new ref or a more specific selector.
The file is not where expected
Cause: a relative filename is resolved against the workspace root, not necessarily the directory shown in your shell. Fix: use an explicit path supported by your MCP workspace conventions, or inspect the MCP output directory when no filename was supplied.
The output format is wrong
Cause: the filename extension was omitted or does not match the intended format. Fix: use .png, .jpeg, or .webp explicitly. PNG is the fallback when no format is specified.
The image is blurry or unexpectedly large
Cause: the selected scale does not match your goal. Fix: use scale: "css" for CSS-pixel output, or scale: "device" when device-pixel detail is required. Device scale can produce larger files.
The capture contains an intermediate loading state
Cause: the command ran before the page’s visual state stabilized. Fix: wait for a specific visible component or application-ready condition, disable or complete animations where your test permits, and then capture.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also offers MCP tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a direct call, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
