Playwright MCP is Microsoft’s Model Context Protocol server for browser automation. It lets an MCP-capable assistant control a browser through Playwright tools, inspect pages as structured accessibility snapshots, and carry out multi-step tasks such as navigating to https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc and adding todo items. You install it with Node.js 20 or newer, register the server in your AI client, then choose a browser and profile model that fits your security and state requirements.
What Playwright MCP is
Playwright MCP is software, not a physical product. Microsoft describes it as an MCP server that exposes Playwright browser automation to an MCP-compatible AI client. The client sends actions to the server; the server launches or connects to a browser, performs those actions, and returns page information.
The important distinction is how the assistant understands a page. In ordinary use, the server provides structured accessibility snapshots rather than requiring the model to reason from screenshots alone. Those snapshots describe roles, names, states and relationships for controls, so an assistant can identify a button, link, form field or heading and then act on it. Microsoft presents this as interaction with page structure and says a vision model is not normally required. That description is a design choice, not a guarantee that every page or workflow will automate successfully.

What an MCP request looks like
A typical workflow is iterative:
- The assistant asks the server to open a URL.
- The server returns a structured snapshot of the current page.
- The assistant selects an element from that snapshot and calls an interaction tool.
- The server returns the updated page state, allowing the assistant to continue.
This model is useful for login flows, form completion, exploratory testing and tasks where the next action depends on what the browser just discovered.

Prerequisites and installation
Required software
- Node.js 20 or newer. The version requirement is stated in Microsoft’s getting-started documentation and may change, so check the current project instructions before installing.
- An MCP client. Examples in the official setup guidance include VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop. Other compatible clients can use the same server command, but their configuration files and UI paths differ.
- A supported browser. The project documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit and Edge choices. The browser you select must be available to the Playwright installation or otherwise configured according to the current README.
Minimal server configuration
The standard server invocation uses npx and the latest package tag:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
A generic MCP configuration entry looks like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
Save that entry using your client’s documented MCP configuration route, then restart or reload the client so it discovers the server. Do not assume that every client uses the same filename, settings panel or reload command. Microsoft publishes client-specific directions for the clients named above.
Pinning versus the latest package
@latest is convenient for a first setup, but it permits package updates whenever the command resolves a new release. For repeatable development or CI work, use the versioning approach recommended by the current project documentation and test upgrades deliberately. Node.js guidance and package behavior can change over time.
How the browser interaction works
Accessibility snapshots instead of pixel-only control
After navigation, the assistant receives a structured accessibility view. It can use visible names and semantic roles to locate controls, then request clicks, typing, selections or other browser actions. This can be more inspectable than asking a model to infer coordinates from an image, especially on ordinary forms and content-heavy sites.
Snapshots do not guarantee success. A page may expose incomplete semantics, render important content inside a canvas, require a challenge, or change between the snapshot and the next action. Treat the returned structure as the server’s current observation and be prepared to request another snapshot after navigation, submission or a delayed update.

- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures

Typical getting-started task
Microsoft’s example task is to navigate to https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc and add a few todo items. In a client that has loaded the server, give the assistant that request in plain language. The assistant should navigate, inspect the snapshot, identify the todo input, enter items and verify the resulting list. The exact tool names and transcript shown depend on the MCP client.
Choosing a browser
The project documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit and Edge options. Browser choice should follow the site and behavior you need to reproduce rather than a blanket claim that one engine is best.
| Choice | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | General web automation and sites primarily developed against Chromium. | That the required Chromium build is installed and launchable. |
| Firefox | Cross-browser checks or workflows whose behavior differs in Firefox. | That the Firefox browser and Playwright integration are available. |
| WebKit | Testing behavior close to WebKit-based browsers. | That the WebKit runtime is installed and supported by your environment. |
| Edge | Workflows that must use Microsoft Edge specifically. | Which Edge channel and executable the current instructions expect. |
Use the current Playwright MCP README for the exact browser-selection flags. Browser binaries, executable paths and client wrappers are implementation details that can change.
Persistent profiles versus isolated sessions
Persistent profile
A persistent profile stores browser state between runs. That can include cookies, local storage and an authenticated session, making it suitable for repeated work in an account you intentionally prepared for automation. The trade-off is that credentials and other sensitive state remain on disk and may be reused by later tasks.
Isolated context
An isolated session starts clean. It is preferable for reproducible tests, untrusted sites and tasks where one run must not inherit another run’s cookies or storage. When the context closes, in-memory state is lost unless you explicitly provide state through the mechanisms documented by the project.

| Requirement | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse a prepared login | Persistent profile | Cookies and local storage survive between runs. |
| Start every test clean | Isolated context | Previous sessions do not silently affect results. |
| Handle sensitive accounts | Either, with controls | Persistent storage increases retention risk; isolation increases login work. |
| Parallel independent tasks | Isolated contexts | Each task can have separate state and fewer collisions. |
Do not share a personal daily-driver profile casually. Use a dedicated browser profile, least-privilege account and an operating-system account or container boundary appropriate to the risk. Exact flags for persistent directories, isolated contexts, connecting to an existing browser and sharing contexts are maintained in the current project documentation.
When MCP is the right workflow
Choose MCP for iterative, stateful work
- The next action depends on the page just inspected.
- You need a login, shopping cart, multi-page wizard or other retained browser state.
- An assistant must inspect rich page structure repeatedly while solving a task.
- You want browser interaction available as tools inside an MCP client rather than as a separate script.
Consider a CLI workflow for concise coding tasks
Microsoft’s project positioning says CLI-based workflows can be more token-efficient for some coding-agent tasks, while MCP is useful when persistent state, rich inspection and iterative interaction matter. This is qualitative guidance, not a published benchmark. A deterministic Playwright script may be easier to review, version and run in CI when the steps are already known.
Security and reliability checklist
- Use a dedicated profile for automation; never assume a persistent profile is safe for every environment.
- Keep secrets out of prompts and configuration files that other users or processes can read.
- Restrict the sites and accounts the assistant is allowed to access.
- Request a fresh snapshot after navigation, redirects, modal dialogs or asynchronous updates.
- Expect bot checks, CAPTCHAs, unsupported widgets and pages with poor accessibility semantics to require manual handling or a different test strategy.
- Record the browser, Node.js and package versions when diagnosing a failure.
Troubleshooting common failures
The client does not list Playwright tools
Confirm that the MCP entry uses command: "npx" and args: ["@playwright/mcp@latest"], then restart or reload the client. Check the client’s MCP logs for JSON syntax errors, a missing Node.js executable or a blocked package download.
Node.js version is rejected
Install Node.js 20 or newer, open a new terminal so the updated PATH is active, and verify with node --version. If your client launches servers with a restricted PATH, configure the absolute path to the intended Node.js installation using that client’s documented method.
The browser fails to launch
Check that the selected browser runtime is installed, that the executable is accessible to the account running the MCP client, and that sandbox or container restrictions are satisfied. Try a documented browser choice that is available in your environment rather than guessing an executable path.

The assistant cannot find a control
Ask for a new accessibility snapshot and inspect the control’s accessible name and role. The page may have changed, may be inside an iframe, or may expose little semantic information. A screenshot-driven or purpose-built script can be more suitable for canvas-heavy interfaces.
Login disappears between runs
You are probably using an isolated context or a different profile directory. Choose a deliberately configured persistent profile, or supply saved state using the current project’s documented method. Treat saved state as a secret and protect its filesystem permissions.
Actions time out or a page remains blank
Verify the URL from the browser itself, allow for redirects and delayed network activity, and capture a fresh snapshot after the page settles. Network policy, a bot challenge or a site-side failure may be the cause rather than an MCP configuration error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playwright MCP a browser or an AI model?
No. It is an MCP server that exposes Playwright browser controls to an MCP-capable AI client. The client supplies the model; the server supplies browser automation and page observations.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use a browser other than Chromium?
Yes. Microsoft documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit and Edge choices. Confirm the current installation and selection instructions for the browser and client combination you use.
Should I use a persistent profile for production automation?
Only when retaining browser state is an intentional requirement and you can protect the stored data. Otherwise, an isolated context reduces cross-run state leakage and improves reproducibility.
Does an accessibility snapshot make every website automatable?
No. Poor semantics, canvas content, iframes, bot challenges and rapidly changing pages can still prevent reliable interaction.
