If PlayStation Plus stops working, first check PlayStation Network’s live status, then verify that the subscription is active on the account you’re using. For a padlock or missing game, restore licenses: on PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses; on PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. If another account pays for Plus, check console sharing or primary-PS4 activation.
Use the symptom guide below to narrow down whether the cause is an outage, subscription or account issue, sharing setting, license, network connection, or a specific game.
Start with the symptom

Check whether PlayStation Network is having an outage
Open the PlayStation Service Status page and check Account Management, Gaming and Social, and PlayStation Store. The page reports service categories and may identify affected platforms, so an incident does not necessarily mean every PlayStation service is down.

Signing in and validating an entitlement, using multiplayer or social features, and accessing Store content rely on different services. If the relevant category shows an incident, wait for service to recover and try again; changing account or console settings will not resolve a Sony-side outage.

Confirm the subscription and account
Make sure you are signed in to the PlayStation Network account that bought the subscription. On that account, open subscription or membership management and confirm the plan name, expiration or next payment date, and payment status. Check the transaction history if a renewal or purchase is unclear. Do not buy another subscription until you have confirmed the account and existing payment.
Plus automatically renews until canceled. If the wallet does not have enough funds, Sony’s US terms say the default payment method may be used for a recurring fee. A payment issue does not necessarily mean access ends immediately, so check the account’s displayed status rather than guessing. Promotional access can convert to a paid subscription unless canceled before it ends; cancellation normally stops future payments, not an already-paid period. Refund exceptions may depend on local law and Sony’s policy. See the PlayStation Plus Usage Terms.
Plus plans and content differ. In the US, Sony’s support materials describe Essential, Extra, and Premium; Game Catalog and other entitlements depend on the plan. Availability can also vary by country or region, device, account type, age, and parental controls. A game leaving a catalog or no longer being included in your plan can lose access without indicating a console fault. Check PlayStation Plus Support for the applicable benefits.

Restore licenses for a padlock or missing entitlement
License restoration can help when a game or add-on is missing, shows a padlock, or cannot verify its entitlement. It does not delete saved data, and it is not a fix for an expired subscription, a catalog removal, or a service outage.
- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
After restoring licenses, restart the console and test again. If the title remains locked, confirm that it is still available through your plan, that you are using the account with the entitlement, and that the subscription is active. Check sharing on PS5 or PS4
If Plus belongs to another account on the same console, only selected benefits can be shared, and the setting must be enabled by the subscribing account. Sony’s sharing guidance covers one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled and one primary PS4; this is not unlimited sharing across multiple consoles or accounts.

PS5: Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
- Sign in to the account that subscribes to Plus.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable on the PS5 where other users should access eligible benefits.
- Restore licenses, restart the console, then test the feature from the other user’s account.
The setting can be active on only one PS5 at a time. If another PS5 is associated with the account, disable sharing there or use remote deactivation. Sony limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months. See PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play.

PS4: Activate the console as primary
- Sign in to the account that subscribes to Plus.
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Select Activate. If another PS4 is already primary, deactivate it first.
- Restore licenses, restart the console, and test again.
Each account can have one primary PS4. See Activate a primary PS4 console.
Know which benefits are shared
Other users on the enabled console can access selected benefits, including online multiplayer, downloaded Monthly Games, downloaded games purchased with a Plus discount, and eligible Game Catalog or Classics Catalog games, subject to plan and account restrictions. Sharing does not let another account redeem Plus games, make Plus-discounted purchases, use the subscriber’s online storage, receive automatic patch downloads, or get early access to time-limited trials. If online multiplayer is the only thing that fails
Most paid PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, but some games do not. Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing or publisher information before treating a subscription prompt as proof that Plus is broken. Then test another online game or Plus-dependent feature if one is available.
- If other online games also fail, check status, subscription, account, and console-sharing settings.
- If only one game fails, check its server status, pending updates, publisher-account requirements, age rules, and the specific mode you are trying to use.
- If the account is a child account, check parental controls and age restrictions with the family manager.
A subscription on the family manager’s account does not remove every restriction on a child account. Country or region settings can also affect subscriptions, vouchers, payment methods, and content; do not use a region change as a workaround.

Test the feature on the account that subscribes to Plus. If it works there but not on another user’s account, the difference may be a sharing limitation rather than a general Plus failure. Online storage is specifically not shared through console sharing; a second account cannot use the subscriber’s cloud storage. Plus support lists cloud storage and Share Play among its features, but availability depends on account and feature rules. Check Plus support and the sharing guide.

Resolve a failed or disputed payment
Renewal trouble can involve an expired card, a bank decline, insufficient wallet funds, an invalid default payment method, a country mismatch, a canceled subscription, or a payment still processing. A reversed payment or chargeback is different from an ordinary renewal failure and can lead to an account or console suspension while Sony investigates.
- Check the subscription status and payment date on the account that bought Plus.
- Review transaction history and confirm the payment method and its country match the account’s applicable Store region.
- Resolve a declined or disputed payment through the payment provider and PlayStation Support; avoid repeated purchases while status is unclear.
- Once the account shows an active entitlement, sign out and back in, restart the console, and restore licenses if a game remains locked.
If the charge appears on your statement but not in the account’s transaction history, or a payment was reversed, contact PlayStation Support. Sony’s Terms of Service address suspensions related to reversed payments.
Check the console’s network and software
If the relevant PlayStation service is available but the console cannot validate a license or connect, use the least disruptive checks first:
- Restart the console.
- Restart the modem and router. For the PS5 CE-109258-5 server or license connection error, Sony advises turning network equipment off for at least five minutes before restarting it.
- Run the console’s internet connection test. If possible, temporarily test with a wired connection.
- Install pending system software updates.
- Restore licenses if the problem is a lock or entitlement error, then retry.
Sony’s CE-109258-5 troubleshooting guide also advises checking service status and trying again later because a connection problem may be temporary. A Plus-only failure is not enough evidence to replace a router. Avoid factory resets or deleting saved data as early troubleshooting steps.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Stop repeating console fixes and contact PlayStation Support when payment and access do not agree, or an account restriction may be involved. This is especially important if:
- You were charged but the subscription or game entitlement is missing.
- The subscription shows as active online but not on the console after sign-in, restart, and license restoration.
- Your account or console is suspended, or a payment was reversed.
- Console sharing or primary activation cannot be enabled despite using the correct account.
- A purchase receipt shows ownership but the title remains locked.
Have the affected PSN account, console model, error code, transaction date, and receipt or transaction ID ready. Do not share your password or payment details with unofficial activation services.
