Pixel’s Material 3 Expressive redesign did not arrive in the original Android 16 Beta 1. The major preview came later, in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, a separate quarterly update track. Google then brought the redesign to Pixel 6 and newer phones and Pixel Tablet in the September 2025 Pixel Drop. In 2026, eligible Pixel owners should get it through the stable software-update channel, not by installing the old QPR1 beta.
Android 16 Beta 1 and QPR1 Beta 1 are different releases
The version names are easy to conflate. Android 16 Beta 1 belonged to the main Android 16 preview cycle. Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 was a later beta for the first quarterly platform release. Google describes QPRs as updates delivered to Pixel devices through Feature Drops; QPR1 is where it documented the Material 3 Expressive system changes. Google’s Android 16 QPR release notes distinguish that track from the main release.
Material 3 Expressive was announced in May 2025 as a design refresh for Android and Wear OS. Android 16’s June 2025 stable launch included groundwork, but not the complete visual redesign. The first major Pixel preview arrived in QPR1 Beta 1, released May 20–21, 2025; the public Pixel rollout followed in September 2025. Google’s announcement of Material 3 Expressive and its Android 16 launch post provide that context.
What Material 3 Expressive changes
Material 3 Expressive is an evolution of Material You, not a separate Android version or a single setting. Google describes a visual language intended to feel more personal, glanceable, and responsive. It uses more prominent color and typography, distinctive controls, depth and blur, and livelier motion. The design direction spans Android, Wear OS, and Google apps, but each app or surface can adopt it on its own schedule. Third-party apps do not change automatically; their developers need to implement the relevant design components.

On Pixel, the documented system-level refresh touches notifications, Quick Settings, the lock screen, and launcher. The practical effect is a more substantial visual update than a wallpaper-color change, though the details depend on the device, software build, and app.
What changed on Pixel
Quick Settings and notifications
Quick Settings received updated tile shapes and proportions, spacing, and a more expressive visual treatment. Coverage of QPR1 Beta 1 also reported resizable tiles and background blur. The notification shade gained refreshed styling and greater use of depth. These changes can alter how dense the panel feels and how quickly you scan its controls. 9to5Google’s QPR1 coverage describes the Quick Settings changes alongside Google’s documented system refresh.
Do not assume the beta universally enabled a split notification and Quick Settings layout. A split-panel design was reported in development, but its presence or availability varied; it should not be treated as a guaranteed QPR1 Beta 1 feature.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Lock screen, launcher, and volume controls
The lock screen and Pixel Launcher received visual updates, and the volume panel and sliders were also reported with refreshed styling. Clock presentation and customization evolved across later QPR builds, so not every control discussed during beta coverage was available in the first build. The exact appearance can also vary by Pixel model and software version.

Wallpaper and Style
QPR1-related Pixel coverage described a reorganized Wallpaper & Style experience, including wallpaper effects that can frame a selected subject with a shape, weather overlays, and tools for managing cinematic effects. Google Photos wallpaper suggestions and a Wallpaper Studio area were also reported. Some customization controls, including a possible Themes entry, were incomplete or experimental in the first beta. Features and placement changed in later builds; beta discoveries should not be read as a promise that every item shipped unchanged.

Google apps and other Android phones
Google apps can adopt the new visual language through their own updates, so their redesigns need not arrive alongside a system update. Nor did every Android 16 phone receive the Pixel interface at the same time: Pixel devices got the major refresh through QPR1, while manufacturers control software timing and implementation on other phones. Later reporting described broader carryover into subsequent Android releases. Android Authority’s later-version coverage discusses that evolution.
Which devices got the stable Pixel rollout?
Google said the September 2025 Pixel Drop would bring Material 3 Expressive to Pixel 6 and newer phones and Pixel Tablet. That is the clearest published range for the stable Pixel rollout; it is separate from the device list for any historical beta build. A phone’s eligibility for the main Android 16 beta did not by itself guarantee support for every QPR beta or every feature. For the stable rollout announcement, see Google’s September 2025 Pixel Drop post.
Should you install an Android beta to try it?
In 2026, installing the old Android 16 QPR1 beta is not the appropriate way to get Material 3 Expressive. If your supported Pixel has not received the update, check for stable updates in Settings → System → Software updates. Google’s current Android Beta Program is for newer testing releases, not a shortcut to the already-released QPR1 preview.

At the time, enrolling in the beta meant accepting unfinished software in exchange for an early look. Beta builds can bring battery drain, visual glitches, app incompatibilities, and features that change between releases. Users reported battery-drain problems around the May 2025 rollout, but contemporaneous reporting did not establish a universal defect or prove a single cause. PiunikaWeb’s report attributed the complaints to user reports and escalation.
Choose stable if the Pixel is your primary phone
Waiting for stable software is the safer choice if you depend on the device for work, banking, authentication, Android Auto, or device-management apps, or if you cannot tolerate troubleshooting or a possible data wipe. Beta compatibility can vary by app and build.
If you were considering beta enrollment
Historically, enrollment was through Google’s Android Beta Program page: sign in with the Google Account on the Pixel, select an eligible device, enroll it, then check Settings → System → Software updates for the over-the-air update. Back up important data first. Leaving a beta at the wrong time can offer a downgrade that erases device data; read the opt-out and update prompts before accepting them. Google’s Android 16 installation guidance is the relevant official reference for that release.

If blur or motion effects are uncomfortable, Android 16 QPR2 later added a Reduce blur effects option under Settings → Accessibility → Color & motion. That was not a QPR1 Beta 1 feature.
What to take away from the version mix-up
The precise claim is that Material 3 Expressive reached Pixel first in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, not the original Android 16 Beta 1. The beta provided an early preview; Google’s stable Pixel rollout followed in September 2025 for Pixel 6 and newer phones and Pixel Tablet. In 2026, check stable system updates rather than enrolling in that old beta.
