Google now documents Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. Once enabled, it lets you unlock the phone by placing an enrolled finger over the in-display sensor while the screen is completely off—without first tapping the display or pressing the power button. The Pixel 9a and Pixel 9 Pro Fold are not on Google’s current supported-device list.
What Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock changes
Ordinarily, you wake a Pixel’s display before using its under-screen fingerprint reader. With this setting on, the reader can recognize an enrolled finger while the display is off. The sensor is near the bottom of the screen, and there may be no visible outline to guide your finger.
This is different from Always-on Display, which keeps information visible, and from “Tap to check phone” or “Lift to check phone,” which wake the display. Those options can help you see where to place your finger; they are not required for screen-off unlocking.
Which Pixel phones support it?
Google’s current Pixel fingerprint setup page lists the following models. “Not listed” means the model does not appear on that page; it is not a claim that Google can never add support in a future update.

See Google’s Pixel fingerprint setup page for its current device list. Android 16 compatibility alone does not guarantee this setting: Google’s listing is model-specific. A Google Pixel Community thread about a missing Pixel 8 Pro option also illustrates why it should not be treated as an Android-16-wide feature.
How to turn it on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Tap Device unlock.
- Tap Fingerprint Unlock.
- Turn on Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock.
You need a supported screen-lock method and at least one enrolled fingerprint. Menu wording can vary by Pixel model or software version. If you do not see the listed path, search Settings for “Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock.” If the option is still missing, check whether your phone is on Google’s supported list rather than assuming that its Android version is sufficient.

How to use it—and what to expect
With the screen off, place the registered part of your finger over the sensor near the bottom of the display and hold it steady. The phone then follows its normal unlock process. It is not “tap anywhere to unlock,” and finding the sensor by feel may take practice.
Always-on Display is not required. If you prefer a visible target, you can turn on Always-on Display or use a wake option such as “Tap to check phone.” Face Unlock can also remain enabled as another way to unlock; it is not replaced by this setting. To check that fingerprint unlocking works on its own, temporarily disable Face Unlock or cover the front camera during a test.

- The power behind AI on Google Pixel - Google Tensor G4 is Pixel’s most powerful chip yet. It’s built for advanced AI, cutting-edge photos and videos, and smarter ways to help all day.
Unlocking the phone does not guarantee that every app, payment or work profile will accept the fingerprint as its only authentication. Those services can apply their own checks.
If it does not work reliably
- Confirm eligibility: Check that your model appears on Google’s supported-device list.
- Update the phone: Install available system and Google Play system updates.
- Check placement: Try the lower-display sensor area with the registered part of your finger; hold it still and use a consistent press. Keep the finger and display clean and dry.
- Check the screen protector: Google warns that a protector that is not Made for Google certified may affect fingerprint performance or security. If recognition worsened after fitting a protector, check its certification and consider registering your fingerprints again. Follow Google’s fingerprint troubleshooting guidance.
- Use a visible guide if needed: Temporarily enable Always-on Display or “Tap to check phone” while learning the sensor’s position. You can leave screen-off unlocking disabled if the invisible target is more frustrating than useful.
- Enter your backup credential when asked: Android may require your PIN, pattern or password instead of a fingerprint. This is not necessarily a fault with the sensor.
Security and the Android 16 connection
The feature was first spotted in an Android 16 Developer Preview 2 build in December 2024, when it was still pre-release. Droid Life’s report at the time discussed the possibility that support was tied to ultrasonic fingerprint hardware. Google’s current help page establishes which models it lists, but does not explain the hardware rationale; treat that explanation as early reporting, not a confirmed statement from Google.

Google’s documentation now makes screen-off fingerprint unlocking a usable, documented feature on selected models, not merely a preview discovery. The setting changes when the sensor can listen; it does not remove the need for a secure screen lock. Anyone with a fingerprint enrolled on the device may be able to unlock it, so only enroll people you trust. Android may still request the primary credential after certain security events or at other times.
