Ping tests whether an address answers ICMP echo requests; it does not prove that a website is working. For a useful availability check, combine a host-level ping with DNS resolution and an HTTP request to the exact URL. This guide shows the commands, explains every common result, and gives a repeatable troubleshooting path for Linux and macOS (with platform differences called out).
What ping actually tests
The ping utility sends ICMP ECHO_REQUEST packets and waits for ICMP ECHO_REPLY packets from a host or gateway. A reply demonstrates that an endpoint on the path answered that protocol. It does not fetch HTML, execute application code, validate TLS, or confirm that the expected page content is present.
That distinction prevents two common mistakes:
- Ping succeeds, website fails: the host or network edge is reachable, but DNS-to-application routing, the web server, TLS, authentication, URL, or application itself may be broken.
- Ping fails, website works: firewalls and providers often filter or deprioritize ICMP while allowing HTTPS. A timeout is not proof that the site is down.
Packet loss and latency describe the selected probe path during the selected interval. They are not automatically the same as a visitor’s page-load experience.

ping -c 4 example.com
The command exits with status 0 when the requested test completes successfully, status 1 when no replies arrive (or the requested count is not met by the deadline), and status 2 for other errors. Check the status in a shell script with $? immediately after the command.
macOS and other Unix-like systems
Run ping example.com and stop with Ctrl+C. macOS also accepts -c for a finite number of packets:
ping -c 4 example.com
Flags, timeout defaults, output wording, and exit behavior can differ between operating systems. Use man ping on the machine that will run your script rather than assuming Linux options are portable.
Test an IP address separately
ping 203.0.113.10
If the IP responds but the hostname does not, investigate DNS or the hostname’s address family. If neither responds, continue with the layered checks below; ICMP may simply be blocked.
Verify that DNS resolves
Before interpreting a ping timeout, confirm that the name maps to an address:
getent hosts example.com
On systems without getent, use:
nslookup example.com
or:
dig example.com
A DNS failure means the client cannot reliably select a destination; it is a different problem from an ICMP timeout. Compare answers from another network or resolver when investigating a suspected DNS incident.

Check the website with HTTP
Start with headers
Use curl to request the URL’s headers:
curl -I https://example.com/
-I uses the HTTP HEAD method. Some servers, proxies, and application frameworks deny or mishandle HEAD even though GET works. In that case, make a GET request while discarding the body and printing the response code:
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}
' https://example.com/
curl considers a transfer successful when it received an HTTP response; a 404, 500, or other status is not automatically a curl transfer error. Add --fail when a script should treat HTTP 400 and higher as an error:
curl --fail -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}
' https://example.com/
Keep the printed status when diagnosing redirects, authentication, or an endpoint whose normal response is not 2xx. A redirect may be healthy, while a protected endpoint may correctly return 401 or 403.
Inspect the complete exchange
curl -v https://example.com/
Verbose output shows name resolution, connection attempts, TLS negotiation, request headers, redirects, and response headers. Do not paste credentials or private cookies from this output into a public ticket.
Use both tests as a decision tree
| Ping | HTTP request | Likely interpretation and next action |
|---|---|---|
| Replies | Expected response | Basic reachability and this URL’s application response are present from this location. Continue with content or transaction checks if required. |
| Replies | Timeout, TLS error, or 4xx/5xx | ICMP works, but the web layer may have a service, certificate, routing, authentication, URL, or application problem. Use curl -v and inspect server-side logs. |
| Timeout | Expected response | ICMP is probably filtered or deprioritized, or the ping path differs from HTTPS. Do not label the site down solely from ping. |
| Timeout | Timeout or connection failure | There is a reachability problem from this probe, but it could be DNS, routing, firewall, host, TLS, or service failure. Repeat from another network and test the resolved IP where appropriate. |
| Replies | 404 or other intentional status | The server answered. Check that the URL and method are correct; transport success and application success are separate conditions. |
Test IPv4 and IPv6 independently
A hostname can have both address families, with one path broken. On systems that provide them:

curl -6 -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}

Use the equivalent options documented by your platform. A failure in only one family points to an address, routing, firewall, or service configuration specific to that family.

Why ping times out when the website works
ICMP filtering
Host firewalls, cloud security groups, transit providers, and load balancers can drop echo requests. HTTPS may terminate at a different edge system and continue normally.
Rate limiting and deprioritization
Routers may delay or discard diagnostic packets under load. Occasional loss does not establish equivalent loss for TCP or page traffic.
Different paths and destinations
DNS can return geographically or topologically different addresses. The ICMP responder may be a gateway, while HTTPS reaches a CDN or reverse proxy. Compare the resolved addresses and run the HTTP check from the same network.

When both ping and HTTP fail
- Resolve the hostname with
dig,nslookup, orgetent hosts. - Try the URL from a second connection, such as mobile data, to separate local-network trouble from a broad outage.
- Use
curl -vto identify whether failure occurs during DNS, TCP connect, TLS, redirect, or response handling. - Check local and upstream firewall rules, proxy settings, VPN routes, and the destination’s security controls.
- Compare the result with the service’s own status information and server logs before changing DNS or restarting production systems.
Make a scriptable availability check
A minimal Bash check can keep the layers separate:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -u
host="example.com"
url="https://example.com/"
if ping -c 4 "$host" >/tmp/ping.out 2>&1; then
echo "ICMP: replies received"
else
echo "ICMP: no successful reply (may be filtered)"
fi
code=$(curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}' --max-time 20 "$url")
status=$?
if [ "$status" -eq 0 ]; then
echo "HTTP: $code"
else
echo "HTTP transfer failed (curl exit $status)"
fi
Set timeouts appropriate to your service and record the probe location, timestamp, URL, address family, status code, and latency. Do not page an on-call engineer on one failed sample without retries or corroboration.
Recurring monitoring versus a one-time test
Manual ping and curl answer an immediate diagnostic question. Scheduled external monitoring is appropriate when you need alerts, checks from multiple regions, or a public status page. Choose a service by its check types (HTTP, TCP, and ICMP), probe geography, interval, timeout and retry policy, alert channels, status-page support, and plan limits.

Vendor settings are not universal standards. For example, Uptime.com documents a configuration using five ICMP packets per check and selectable intervals from one minute to one hour. Uptimehub describes recurring ICMP and TCP checks, six regions, alerts, and status pages. Treat those as each provider’s stated features, not a generally correct threshold.

When the question is “what does a real page look like?” rather than “does ICMP answer?”, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF and can exercise the page at the application layer.
For the documented API options and authentication details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting checklist
“Unknown host” or no DNS answer
Verify spelling, the zone’s records, local resolver configuration, and whether a VPN or split-DNS policy is required. Query a second resolver before changing authoritative records.
“Request timed out” from ping
Run the HTTP test. If HTTPS works, record ICMP filtering rather than opening a firewall solely to make ping green.
curl reports a certificate error
Check the system clock, certificate chain, hostname, SNI, and interception proxies. Do not disable certificate verification as a production fix.

HEAD returns 403 or 405
Use the GET form with -o /dev/null. The endpoint may intentionally reject HEAD.
curl shows 404 or 500 but exits successfully
That is an HTTP response, not a transfer failure. Inspect the status explicitly and add --fail only when your script should classify 400-and-higher responses as errors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ping a URL path such as /login?
No. Ping accepts a host or IP address, not an HTTP path. Use curl or another HTTP client for the complete URL.
Does a successful ping prove my server is secure?
No. It only reports an ICMP response. Security, TLS configuration, authentication, and application behavior require separate tests.
Should monitoring use ICMP or HTTP?
Use the check that represents the failure users care about. HTTP validates the web endpoint; ICMP can add useful network reachability context but may be filtered.
