Short answer: do not start a new production workflow on PhantomJS. Its project is suspended and its GitHub repository has been archived read-only since May 30, 2023. Urlbox is a hosted screenshot API that renders with headless Chrome/Chromium through Puppeteer, so it removes browser operations from your team but introduces a vendor API, data-flow review and usage costs. For a new managed API, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners and other clutter before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here. Keep PhantomJS only when a low-risk legacy job is stable and its older rendering behavior is an explicit requirement.
What each option actually is
PhantomJS: an embedded, legacy browser
PhantomJS is a JavaScript-scriptable headless browser built on QtWebKit. Its documentation covers page automation, screen capture, headless testing and network monitoring. The capture guide describes rendering HTML and CSS, SVG, images and Canvas into PNG, JPEG, GIF or PDF.
Those capabilities describe the historical PhantomJS engine, not compatibility with today’s websites. The project homepage says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” The official repository is archived and read-only, with an archive date of May 30, 2023. You therefore own the runtime, operating-system packaging, browser behavior and every workaround required by your pages.
Urlbox: a hosted rendering service
Urlbox converts URLs and HTML into screenshots, PDFs and videos, and can extract text, HTML and metadata. Its documented request styles include render links plus synchronous and asynchronous JSON API calls. Urlbox says its rendering engine uses headless Chrome/Chromium through Puppeteer.

Its product documentation describes viewport and responsive settings, full-page and element captures, multiple output formats and SDKs. The vendor also advertises more than 100 rendering options. Treat feature counts, quality, scale, security and accuracy statements as vendor claims rather than independent benchmark results.

How to choose without relying on a headline comparison
1. Inventory the pages and scripts you already capture
Record every URL class, authentication method, viewport, output format, wait condition, JavaScript interaction and post-processing step. Save representative pages: static HTML, client-rendered content, lazy-loaded images, long documents, login-gated pages and pages with consent dialogs. A PhantomJS script may appear simple while depending on WebKit-specific timing or DOM behavior.
2. Define the fidelity you require
Compare rendered pixels and extracted content against an agreed reference, not against a vendor feature list. Check modern CSS, web fonts, SVG, Canvas, video poster frames, lazy images, sticky elements, responsive breakpoints and print/PDF pagination. PhantomJS’s documented ability to render CSS and Canvas does not establish modern-browser fidelity.
3. Decide who owns operations
With PhantomJS, you patch the base image, keep the executable available, isolate untrusted pages, investigate crashes and build retries. A hosted API transfers browser operations to the provider, but you must monitor API failures, rate limits, latency, data residency, retention and contract terms. Neither model automatically satisfies a particular security threat model.

For self-management, include engineering time, worker hosts, concurrency, queueing, browser crashes, upgrades, observability and network egress. For Urlbox or another API, include request charges, retries, storage, webhooks and the engineering needed to avoid duplicate captures. The available material does not establish an apples-to-apples price winner.

5. Test failure behavior
Deliberately send a slow page, a redirect chain, a page that never finishes loading, a bot challenge, malformed HTML and a URL that requires credentials. Verify timeout reporting, retry safety, partial results, logs and whether a failed attempt is charged. Capture these results in your acceptance criteria.
When retaining PhantomJS is reasonable
- The workflow is internal or low risk and already produces accepted images.
- Its pages are compatible with QtWebKit and do not require modern browser features.
- You can freeze a reproducible runtime and accept the project’s suspended status.
- The cost and risk of changing pixel output are greater than the benefit of a newer engine.
Put the executable in a controlled image, pin dependencies, restrict outbound access, set hard timeouts and retain golden screenshots. Treat this as containment of legacy software, not a recommendation for new development.
When a migration to a hosted API makes sense
- Your team does not want to operate browser workers or debug renderer crashes.
- You need Chrome-like behavior, responsive viewports, full-page or element captures, PDFs or video.
- You need a simple URL/HTML request from several languages or services.
- Traffic is variable and a managed service is preferable to provisioning peak capacity.
Before committing, review Urlbox’s current API limits, retention, regional processing, authentication, support terms and price schedule. Run your own page set because no neutral benchmark in the available evidence proves that Urlbox is always more accurate, faster or cheaper than PhantomJS.

Migration plan from a PhantomJS script
- Freeze a baseline. Store the current script, browser version, viewport, output dimensions and sample images.
- Separate inputs from rendering. Put URL selection, authentication and naming outside the PhantomJS process so they can call a new endpoint.
- Map each setting. Translate viewport, full-page behavior, waits, cookies, headers, user-agent and output format. Where no equivalent exists, document the expected visual change.
- Run a dual capture. Send the same URLs to PhantomJS and the candidate service, then compare dimensions, text visibility, missing assets, timing and PDF page breaks.
- Handle asynchronous work. For large batches, use a queue and idempotency key. Do not retry blindly if the first request may have completed.
- Canary and roll back. Route a small percentage of production jobs to the new renderer, watch failures and revert to the frozen legacy path if acceptance thresholds are missed.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you want a managed screenshot API. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
It supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF, with full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request/resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete option list. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.

Reliability, security and performance checklist
Browser and page behavior
- Set an explicit viewport and device scale; otherwise responsive layouts can change between runs.
- Use a deterministic wait condition for client-rendered pages rather than a long arbitrary sleep.
- Check fonts, third-party scripts, ads, analytics and geolocation-dependent content.
- For full-page captures, verify lazy images and sticky headers do not repeat or cover content.
Security and privacy
- Never place long-lived credentials in a public render URL.
- Use dedicated accounts and narrow-scope tokens for authenticated pages.
- Decide whether URLs, HTML, cookies and screenshots may leave your network.
- Threat-model server-side requests to untrusted URLs, including internal-address access and oversized responses.
Operational controls
- Use bounded timeouts, exponential backoff and an idempotent job key.
- Record request ID, URL classification, renderer settings, verdict and output checksum.
- Alert on changes in failure rate, latency, dimensions and unexpected blank images.
- Keep a small visual regression corpus and rerun it after every renderer or API change.
Troubleshooting common failures
The screenshot is blank
Check whether the page requires JavaScript, waits for a selector, blocks unknown user agents or returns a bot challenge. Capture response status and page-verdict information, then test the URL in a normal browser. Do not interpret a blank output as proof that the page itself is empty.
Images or fonts are missing
Inspect network requests, content-security policy, relative URLs and cross-origin restrictions. Confirm that the renderer can reach the asset host and that your wait condition occurs after fonts and lazy images load.
Output differs from PhantomJS
Expect differences when moving from QtWebKit to Chrome/Chromium: font metrics, CSS support, JavaScript timing and PDF pagination can all change. Compare against product requirements, then update baselines deliberately rather than adding random delays.

Jobs time out
Identify whether the delay is DNS, navigation, a never-ending request, JavaScript execution or a blocked third-party resource. Use request blocking where appropriate, set a finite timeout and make retries conditional on the failure type.
Costs are unexpectedly high
Look for duplicate retries, unbounded polling, cache misses and accidental full-page captures. Log each request and its billed or non-billed result; then set caching, batching and concurrency policies.
Bottom-line recommendation
PhantomJS is a maintainable legacy decision only when you intentionally accept its suspended project and QtWebKit behavior. Urlbox is a documented hosted alternative that can reduce browser operations, but it still requires vendor, security and cost validation on your pages. For a new managed screenshot workflow, evaluate ScreenshotNeo first, then run the same acceptance corpus against any remaining candidate before switching production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PhantomJS completely unusable?
No. A frozen, isolated workflow can continue to run if its pages and risk profile remain acceptable; the project’s suspended development means you should not expect ongoing compatibility fixes.
Does Urlbox require me to run Puppeteer?
No. Urlbox exposes hosted render links and API requests; its documentation says the service uses headless Chrome/Chromium through Puppeteer behind the API.
