When ChatGPT suffered a major outage on June 10, 2025, some users joked that they had to write their own emails; others said they could not code or finish schoolwork without it. The jokes made for a sharp headline, but the posts were anecdotes, not proof that everyone panicked. The real story was that a tool many people treated as optional had become part of how they worked, studied, and handled everyday tasks.
What happened when ChatGPT went down?
OpenAI recorded the incident as beginning at 11:36 p.m. PDT on June 9, 2025. On June 10, users encountered elevated errors and slow responses across ChatGPT and other OpenAI services. OpenAI classified it as a partial outage, not a universal, continuous loss of access. Some requests failed while others could still work, and the experience varied by service and user.
OpenAI’s postmortem traced the problem to a routine operating-system update on cloud-hosted GPU servers. A significant number of GPU nodes lost network connectivity, reducing capacity and driving error rates higher. ChatGPT’s error rate peaked at about 35%; the API’s peaked at about 25%, with availability falling to roughly 75%. OpenAI said it restored service by 3 p.m. PDT on June 10.

“Down” can describe several different symptoms: requests that fail outright, intermittent errors, unusually slow replies, or a specific feature that is unavailable while other functions still work. The incident did not mean every user, region, model, or product was affected in precisely the same way, nor that each person lost access for the full duration.
The online reaction: emails, code, and schoolwork
On June 11, Futurism collected reactions from social media and forums. Some users joked that they now had to write work emails themselves. Others framed the interruption as a crisis for routine coding tasks; one Reddit commenter said they could not code without ChatGPT and acknowledged relying on it for everyday work. The remark was revealing, but it was one person’s account—not evidence that developers generally cannot program without a chatbot.
A more striking post came from someone claiming to be a professor, who said only nine of 50 students submitted essays during the outage. That anecdote circulated as a punchline about student dependence. But the coverage did not independently verify the poster’s identity, the figures, or what might have affected submissions. It cannot support a claim that 82% of students rely on ChatGPT, much less a conclusion about students overall.

Other posts joked that without ChatGPT a person would not know how to answer when asked their own name. That is hyperbole, not a literal report of cognitive impairment. And the reaction was not all alarm: people also mocked the reliance, said they could still write unaided, or suggested the world could manage without the chatbot. Futurism’s roundup described a mix of frustration, jokes, and online mockery—not one uniform public panic.
Why a temporary interruption mattered
For many users, ChatGPT is less a special-purpose novelty than a step in an existing workflow. A developer may use it to explain an unfamiliar error, generate boilerplate, or draft a small script. A student may ask it to brainstorm, translate, or revise. An office worker may use it to summarize a document or get a first draft of an email. Losing the tool can disrupt those tasks even when the user is capable of doing them without help.
That distinction matters: reliance is not the same as inability. A person can write a report, solve a coding problem, or plan a lesson independently and still lose time, momentum, or confidence when a familiar assistant is unavailable. The more a workflow assumes instant access, the more noticeable even an intermittent failure becomes.

The possible stakes also differ. A missed personal prompt is an inconvenience; a failed API request inside a business process can interrupt a service. Students and workers facing deadlines may feel the timing more acutely than someone experimenting casually. OpenAI’s incident report confirms that both its consumer-facing ChatGPT service and developer API were affected, but it does not provide outage-specific demographic data that would show which groups were most affected.

Some people also use chatbots for personal routines, advice, or conversation. The social posts suggest that such uses exist, but they do not measure how common they are or establish that users experienced a mental-health crisis during this event. Calling the outage proof of “addiction,” a breakdown, or an inability to think goes beyond the evidence.

The headline is comic exaggeration. Three claims should be kept separate: OpenAI documented a significant service disruption; some people publicly described inconvenience or dependence; and the evidence does not show that most users panicked or could not function. Social-media roundups select posts that are vivid, funny, or provocative. They are useful snapshots of what some people said, not representative polling.

Nor does a partial outage mean everyone was locked out for hours. Error rates and latency can change over time, and different features or API-dependent apps may behave differently. A failed request could also stem from an individual account limit, local network, browser, or authentication issue rather than a platform-wide incident. Checking the OpenAI status page helps distinguish a broader disruption from a local problem.
The practical lesson: don’t make one service a single point of failure
For personal use, keep important drafts, notes, code, and outputs somewhere you control rather than only in a chat history. Save prompts that are central to recurring work, and know how to complete deadline-sensitive tasks without an AI assistant. A second provider can offer an alternative, though no provider is guaranteed to be available during every incident.

For developers, a second chatbot subscription is not the same thing as resilience in an application. Production systems need operational safeguards appropriate to their use: timeouts, sensible retries, logging, monitoring, and—where feasible—a tested fallback or a way to degrade gracefully. Keep source material and critical work independent of a single API. A paid plan from the same provider may offer different features or limits, but it does not remove the risk of a provider-wide infrastructure outage.
The incident also illustrated a narrower infrastructure lesson: shared cloud GPU capacity can connect services that look separate to users. When a provider’s underlying systems are impaired, its chatbot, API, and related products may all feel the effects. That is evidence of concentration risk in this incident, not proof that all AI infrastructure is inherently unreliable.
The June outage lasted hours, but the jokes outlived it because they pointed to a larger change. For some people, ChatGPT had become part of the ordinary machinery of writing, coding, studying, and getting through a workday. The interruption did not prove that users had forgotten how to think. It showed how quickly a convenient tool can become an assumed part of the workflow—and why a backup plan matters.
