On March 18, 2025, Pebble creator Eric Migicovsky announced two PebbleOS smartwatches through his new company, Core Devices: the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2. They were introduced as phone companions with e-paper screens, physical controls and company-estimated battery life of up to 30 days—not as replacements for a smartphone or full-featured sports watches. The names later changed: after Core Devices regained the Pebble trademark, the models became the Pebble 2 Duo and Pebble Time 2.
What Core Devices announced
The original announcement set preorder prices of $149 for the Core 2 Duo and $225 for the Core Time 2, with planned shipping in July and December 2025, respectively. Those were targets announced at the time, not confirmation that either watch shipped on schedule. TechCrunch’s report on the announcement described the watches as PebbleOS-based devices designed around notifications, customization and long battery life.
The initial Core names reflected the fact that the watches were not yet being presented as official Pebble-branded products. In August 2025, Migicovsky said Core Devices had regained the Pebble trademark. The models were renamed Pebble 2 Duo and Pebble Time 2. The company behind them is Core Devices, not the original Pebble company.

Pebble 2 Duo: monochrome, buttons and simplicity
The Core 2 Duo was announced with an always-on black-and-white e-paper screen and physical buttons rather than a touch-first interface. Its planned functions included showing smartphone notifications, controlling music, and running alarms, timers, watch faces and apps. Core Devices advertised up to 30 days of battery life. That is a company estimate, not an independently measured result; actual endurance can depend on use and settings.
For someone who liked the original Pebble’s glanceable display and button-driven controls, this model’s appeal is the familiar interaction style. It is not the choice to make if a touchscreen, advanced health analysis or a large app platform is the priority.
Pebble Time 2: color e-paper and more hardware
The original Core Time 2 announcement described a larger, 64-color e-paper screen, touch input and a metal case. A later design update specified a 1.5-inch touchscreen, stainless-steel front and back, stainless-steel buttons, an RGB LED backlight and hardened glass. It also listed a compass, second microphone, heart-rate monitor, step and sleep tracking, speaker, vibration actuator, screw-mounted back cover and quick-release 22 mm strap. The company continued to advertise up to 30 days of battery life.

That later specification makes the Time 2 more capable than the minimalist monochrome model, but it does not turn it into a dedicated sports watch. The cited design coverage did not establish a specific water-resistance rating, so do not assume an IP rating or treat the watch as waterproof without checking current official specifications. Why Pebble fans—and some new buyers—may care
Pebble’s proposition is different from the phone-like approach of Apple Watch or many Wear OS watches. These watches are intended to complement a phone: surface selected information, handle basic controls and offer a customizable wrist display, while leaving internet access and most heavy computing to the phone. Their e-paper screens, physical buttons and restrained feature set are part of the point, not evidence that they match a flagship smartwatch feature for feature.
- Battery over breadth: Up to 30 days is the company’s advertised figure. The trade-off is fewer capabilities than a watch built for cellular use, extensive apps or deep health tracking.
- Buttons as a feature: Physical controls can be practical for quick, eyes-off interaction. They may feel less natural if you expect a touch-led interface.
- Customization and tinkering: PebbleOS and its developer community appeal to people who enjoy watch faces and small, purpose-built apps. Community software can also vary in polish and maintenance.
Google open-sourced PebbleOS, giving the reboot a foundation based on the original software rather than requiring Core Devices to recreate everything from scratch. That does not mean every part of the hardware, companion service or app ecosystem is open source. The Pebble app ecosystem includes thousands of faces and apps; a January 2026 report put the store at about 15,000. That is an ecosystem count, not a guarantee that every app works unchanged on every new watch. Screen dimensions and formats can require updates, and developers may need to maintain their apps. Browse the Pebble app store or developer tools for the ecosystem itself.

Check phone compatibility before buying
Bluetooth pairing alone does not establish that every feature works equally on iPhone and Android. Notifications, replies, music controls and voice features can depend on the phone’s operating system and its restrictions. Later Pebble coverage, for example, reported that some voice-based messaging features on the Round 2 were initially Android-only, with iOS availability in the European Union expected later. That is evidence of a platform caveat across the product line, not proof of the exact feature set on the Pebble 2 Duo or Time 2.

Before ordering, verify the current companion app’s availability, supported iOS and Android versions, and the specific features you plan to use—especially notification replies and voice input. The available reports do not establish complete iPhone and Android feature parity for these two models as of August 2026.

The Pebble 2 Duo is the clearest fit for former Pebble owners and buyers who want physical buttons, a monochrome glanceable screen and a simple notification companion. The Pebble Time 2 is the more suitable of the pair for someone who wants color, touch input and the additional hardware sensors, while still preferring a deliberately limited watch to a full smartwatch platform.

Either could suit a hobbyist who values community software and customization. Neither is an obvious fit for a serious athlete who needs dependable GPS and detailed training metrics, someone who needs cellular independence, or a buyer seeking ECG, blood-oxygen measurements or comprehensive health analytics. The Time 2’s heart-rate sensor and basic activity and sleep tracking should not be mistaken for a complete fitness platform.
Also weigh the vendor model. Core Devices has described itself as a small, direct-to-consumer operation rather than a conventional venture-backed startup. That approach may suit a focused enthusiast product, but buyers should consider fulfillment, customer support, repair and long-term service risks that come with a small hardware company. In a preorder context, confirm the delivery estimate and cancellation or change terms directly with the seller; do not assume switching models will preserve a place in a queue.
The announcement was the start of a wider reboot
The March 2025 announcement was not the final Pebble lineup. In January 2026, Core Devices introduced the Pebble Round 2, a slimmer round-screen model reported at $199, with a rounded color e-paper display and estimated 10–14-day battery life. TechCrunch also reported that Core Devices had sold 25,000 smartwatch preorders by then. Those figures provide context for the reboot, but they do not verify current stock or shipping dates for the Pebble 2 Duo or Time 2. The Round 2 report also highlights why buyers should check compatibility by model and display format.

For a purchase decision, however, current details belong on the Core Devices storefront: the historical launch prices, preorder targets and announced battery figures are not substitutes for live price, stock, delivery, warranty and software information.
