For a short connection inside one computer, PCI Express (PCIe) is usually cheaper and uses less power than Ethernet. Ethernet adds network adapters, cabling and often a switch, but it can connect separate computers, reach across a room or building, and let multiple hosts share resources. They are usually not alternatives: an Ethernet adapter commonly connects to its server over PCIe.

The practical choice is whether data should stay inside one host or cross a network boundary. Compare the complete data path—not just a PCIe slot against an Ethernet cable.

PCIe is a local interconnect; Ethernet is a network

PCIe is a point-to-point, packet-based I/O connection inside a computer or chassis. A CPU’s root complex connects over PCIe to devices such as NVMe SSDs, GPUs, RAID controllers, FPGAs and network adapters. Links use lanes—commonly x1, x4, x8 or x16—and are designed for relatively short electrical paths.

Ethernet connects network endpoints. A host typically reaches an Ethernet NIC, or network interface card, through PCIe; the NIC then sends data over copper, a direct-attach copper cable (DAC), or fiber. A switch commonly connects multiple hosts, though a direct Ethernet link between two endpoints can work without one.

PCI-SIG describes PCIe’s role in networking applications, including its use as the host-side connection for Ethernet adapters (PCI-SIG: PCIe in networking). That is why a server can use both technologies in the same data path.

Which costs less?

For a device attached to a host that already has a suitable PCIe slot and enough lanes, PCIe usually has the lower incremental cost. The device can often plug directly into the system, without separate network adapters at both ends, a switch, or external cabling. This does not make the device itself cheap: a GPU or accelerator’s purchase cost is not a cost of PCIe.

Ethernet’s cost depends on the full build. A two-host link may need a NIC in each host, compatible ports, cabling and possibly a switch. A larger network adds switch capacity, rack space, power, cooling and potentially licenses or support. Media choices also matter: inexpensive copper, short-reach DAC and fiber with optical transceivers have different bills of materials. Intel’s 25GbE media guidance covers DAC, optical and backplane options and notes that media compatibility depends on the equipment (Intel 25GbE media guide).

PCIe is not automatically cheap at scale. If the platform lacks lanes or slots, adding PCIe switches, retimers, special backplanes or external cabling can add substantial integration cost. PCI-SIG maintains distinct specifications for areas including external cabling and retimers, alongside the base and card specifications (PCI-SIG specifications).

Ethernet can be the better economic choice when a suitable network is already installed, or when centralized storage or accelerators serve multiple hosts. Sharing can avoid buying duplicate resources and make replacement or expansion easier. Compare a dated bill of materials rather than relying on a fixed “cost per gigabit.” Include endpoint cards, available host lanes, switch ports, media, power and installation.

Which uses less power?

For an equivalent short, local connection, PCIe usually has less interconnect overhead: it does not require a separate Ethernet PHY and network path, and commonly needs no switch or external transceiver. But the PCIe link’s power is not the power of the whole device. A GPU, SSD or FPGA can consume far more than the signaling link. Likewise, a slot’s power-delivery capability is not a measure of how much the PCIe link itself consumes.

An Ethernet path can include the host-side PCIe interface, NIC controller, Ethernet MAC and PHY, cable or optical module, and switch port and ASIC. At higher speeds, transceivers, SerDes and cooling can materially affect the total. Power varies with speed, port count, medium, generation and workload; no single Ethernet wattage represents all configurations.

As an illustration of that variation, Intel’s controller documentation lists specific older parts with typical figures of about 0.612 W for an I210-class 1GbE controller, about 4.5 W for an 82599 dual-port 10GbE controller, and roughly 11.5–13 W for certain X540/X550-era 10GBase-T controllers. These are part-specific examples, not current averages or complete system measurements (Intel Ethernet controller and PHY documentation). Adapter power also depends on the exact configuration; for example, NVIDIA documents configuration-dependent power specifications for its ConnectX-6 Dx adapters (ConnectX-6 Dx specifications).

The remote path generally has more active components, but it may provide shared capacity, redundancy and centralized management. Energy per useful byte depends on application throughput as well as the adapters, network, storage and cooling. Idle consumption can differ from loaded consumption; PCIe low-power states and Ethernet energy-saving or runtime-management features are implementation-dependent. Wake-on-LAN or other availability requirements may limit how deeply a device can sleep. Measure the actual system when energy use is a purchasing criterion.

Bandwidth and latency: compare like with like

PCIe rates are commonly stated in gigatransfers per second (GT/s) per lane; Ethernet is commonly stated in gigabits per second (Gb/s) per port. Neither headline is the same as application payload throughput. PCIe’s generation, lane width and protocol overhead matter. Ethernet throughput also depends on framing, FEC, protocol, NIC offloads, software, congestion and—in switched paths—switching.

PCIe 5.0 signals at 32.0 GT/s per lane, while PCIe 6.0 signals at 64.0 GT/s and uses PAM4 signaling with FEC and CRC, according to PCI-SIG (PCIe 5.0 FAQ; PCIe 6.0 specification). PCI-SIG’s database lists a PCIe Base Specification Revision 7.0 dated June 11, 2025; that specification listing does not mean products supporting it are broadly available (specification database).

Ethernet also spans a broad range: vendor adapter families cover speeds from 1GbE through 400GbE, with some adapters using PCIe 5.0 on the host side (Broadcom adapters; NVIDIA adapters). A well-designed high-speed Ethernet fabric can deliver enormous throughput. PCIe is not guaranteed to be faster in application performance if a device, CPU, memory path or topology is the bottleneck; Ethernet is not inherently slow because it is a network.

PCIe is generally the lower-latency choice for a direct local device connection. Ethernet adds NIC processing and may add protocol, queueing and switch delays. RDMA-capable networking can reduce some overhead, but it does not make the two topologies identical.

Examples: which design fits?

Use case Likely fit Why
NVMe SSD inside a workstation PCIe Short, local host-to-device path; no network sharing is needed.
GPU or FPGA in one server PCIe Direct attachment generally favors latency and avoids network equipment.
Storage shared by several servers Ethernet Networked storage can serve multiple hosts and scale separately, though it costs more than a local SSD path.
Multi-node cluster or distributed database Ethernet or another network fabric Hosts are separate systems; networking enables communication, management and independent expansion.
Connection across a rack, room or site Ethernet It is designed for network reach; PCIe is primarily a short-reach interconnect.

When PCIe is the better choice

  • The communicating device and host are in the same computer or chassis.
  • Low latency and a fixed, direct path matter.
  • An appropriate slot and sufficient CPU lanes are already available.
  • There is no need for multiple independent hosts to share the device.
  • A network alternative would require two NICs, switching and external media just to connect local components.

Check the platform before assuming a card will run at its advertised link width. CPU lane limits, slot sharing, lane bifurcation, chipset connections and NUMA placement can reduce bandwidth or increase latency.

When Ethernet is the better choice

  • Endpoints are in separate computers, racks, rooms or sites.
  • Several hosts need a shared storage service or other resource.
  • Compute and storage should scale independently.
  • Independent replacement, network management or flexible topology matters.
  • Suitable switches, ports and cabling are already available.

For short data-center links, DAC can avoid the cost of separate optical modules; fiber is useful when reach or electrical isolation calls for it. Confirm the supported media and transceiver combinations for the exact NIC and switch.

Hybrid designs are normal

In a typical networked server, PCIe connects the CPU to the Ethernet NIC, and Ethernet connects that server to the rest of the network. Remote NVMe storage may use NVMe over Fabrics, while RDMA over Converged Ethernet can reduce host processing overhead for suitable workloads. These approaches extend access across a network; they do not erase the cost, power or latency of the network path. PCIe switches and specialized fabrics can also extend PCIe-style connectivity, but require hardware and integration beyond an ordinary motherboard slot.

A practical decision check

Question Usually favors
Are both endpoints in one host? PCIe
Must the link reach beyond the chassis or connect separate hosts? Ethernet
Must several hosts share the resource? Ethernet
Is minimum local latency the priority? PCIe
Does the facility already have compatible spare network capacity? Ethernet becomes more economical
Are PCIe lanes or slots scarce, or is a PCIe expansion fabric required? Recalculate; PCIe may lose its cost advantage

For a fair budget, total up the PCIe endpoint, platform lane capacity, any retimers or switches, and power and cooling. For Ethernet, count NICs at both ends, switch capacity, cables or optics, support or licensing where applicable, and power and cooling. For energy, compare the complete path at realistic idle and load levels, then divide by useful application throughput—not nominal link rate alone.
