If your PC stopped booting immediately after a Windows 11 update, start with Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): run Startup Repair, then uninstall the latest quality update. If that fails, try System Restore or Safe Mode before using commands, Reset this PC, or a clean installation. The timing suggests the update may be involved, but a failing SSD, display, firmware, power supply, or pre-existing corruption can produce the same symptoms.
First, identify what “won’t boot” means

| BIOS/UEFI opens or says “no boot device” | Boot order, missing Windows Boot Manager, an undetected or failed drive, or changed firmware settings. |
| Windows reaches sign-in, then crashes | Driver, antivirus, startup software, user-profile, or update conflict. |
| BitLocker recovery screen | Encryption protection. Find the recovery key; do not erase the drive just to bypass it. |
If there is no power activity or the SSD is absent from BIOS/UEFI, Windows commands cannot fix the underlying problem.
Protect your files before repairing Windows
- Keep the computer connected to reliable AC power.
- Disconnect external drives, USB hubs, printers, docks, SD cards, and other nonessential devices. Leave only the keyboard and mouse if needed.
- Photograph error messages and stop codes.
- If BitLocker appears, retrieve the recovery key from the Microsoft account or organization that manages the device. Some WinRE tools require it.
- If files are irreplaceable and you have no backup, do not begin with Reset or clean installation. Consider copying files from a live USB or another computer, or use a professional recovery service if the drive may be failing.
Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery because reset and reinstall choices can remove data: recovery options in Windows.

Quick power and display checks
- Turn the PC off completely, disconnect nonessential peripherals, and start it again.
- On a laptop, use the original or compatible charger.
- On a desktop, confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input.
- Try another display cable or monitor. With a dedicated graphics card, connect the monitor to the card’s output rather than the motherboard output (or test the other output if your hardware supports it).
- Note the last screen that appears: manufacturer logo, Windows logo, Automatic Repair, blue screen, or nothing.
Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
When Windows fails repeatedly
To trigger recovery when normal boot never completes, turn on the PC; when the Windows or manufacturer logo appears, hold the power button until it shuts down. Do this once, then start it a third time. Windows should show Automatic Repair; choose Advanced options. This is a recovery trigger, not something to repeat indefinitely. From a working Windows session
Use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, or hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
Using installation media
On another computer, create Windows 11 installation media, boot the affected PC from the USB drive, select language and keyboard options, then choose Repair your computer—not Install now—to reach Troubleshoot. A manufacturer-specific boot-menu key or a UEFI boot-order change may be required. See Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.
Try these fixes in order
1. Startup Repair
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Let it finish; it may restart the PC. If it reports that it could not repair your PC, that does not mean your files are lost. Move on rather than running it repeatedly.

Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Select Uninstall latest quality update first when the failure followed a recent cumulative or security update. Uninstall latest feature update applies to a recent Windows-version upgrade, when offered. These choices can temporarily remove security or reliability fixes; reinstall only after checking for a replacement or known issue. Some updates cannot be removed. 3. Try System Restore
Use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore and choose a point from before the failure. Restore is intended to roll back system files, drivers, software, and settings without intentionally deleting personal files, but it requires a usable restore point and a readable disk. It may ask for an administrator password or BitLocker key and does not replace a backup.

4. Boot Safe Mode
Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking if necessary). Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services; it diagnoses and enables removal of a problem but is not a universal repair. Microsoft lists the available choices in Startup Settings.
If Safe Mode works:
- Uninstall the most recently changed graphics, storage, chipset, VPN, antivirus, or system-utility driver.
- Review Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- In Device Manager, roll back or uninstall a recently changed driver.
- Disable unnecessary startup applications and restart normally.
Do not blindly disable driver-signature enforcement or early-launch antimalware protection. If Windows keeps starting in Safe Mode, open msconfig, select the Boot tab, and clear Safe boot.
5. Repair system files and the file system
If Windows starts sufficiently, open Command Prompt as administrator and run each command to completion, in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
chkdsk /f C:DISM repairs the Windows image; SFC then checks protected system files. chkdsk /f repairs logical file-system errors and may schedule a check for the next restart. It is not a test for a dying SSD or HDD. Microsoft documents these commands in its update troubleshooting guidance.
From WinRE, drive letters can change. An advanced user can inspect them with:

exitThen check likely volumes with dir C:Windows, dir D:Windows, and so on. Do not paste offline DISM/SFC commands without identifying the Windows and boot volumes; the syntax depends on the partition layout. Avoid disk repairs first if the drive disappears, makes unusual noises, or contains irreplaceable data—clone or recover it before stressing the disk.
Check BIOS/UEFI when the PC skips Windows
If the PC opens firmware setup or reports no boot device, check whether the SSD/HDD is detected and whether Windows Boot Manager appears in the boot order. A detected drive with a missing or damaged boot entry may need Windows repair; an undetected drive points to the drive, connection, motherboard, or firmware.
Do not randomly change SATA/RAID/AHCI mode, Secure Boot, TPM, or other firmware settings. Such changes can create another boot failure or trigger BitLocker recovery. WinRE’s UEFI Firmware Settings option can open the appropriate firmware screen.
Quick Machine Recovery
Some newer Windows 11 releases include Quick Machine Recovery, which can use an internet connection from WinRE to retrieve a Microsoft remediation for a known, widespread startup failure. Availability depends on Windows version, device configuration, network support, and whether Microsoft has published a matching fix. It cannot repair every local boot problem and does not replace backup, Startup Repair, update rollback, or hardware diagnosis. See Microsoft’s Quick Machine Recovery documentation.
When recovery media or reinstall is appropriate
If local WinRE is unavailable, installation USB supplies the same recovery tools. If Windows can still boot, launching setup.exe from the media may offer Keep personal files and apps, Keep personal files only, or Keep nothing. The first is least destructive, but these choices may not be available when booting directly from USB into a nonfunctional installation.

A clean installation removes personal files, applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations. Before choosing it, copy data, confirm the Windows edition, verify the drive is healthy, locate software installers and licenses, and confirm activation or digital-license status. Activation usually returns after the reinstalled PC goes online, but licensing or hardware changes can require troubleshooting.
Reset this PC: last resort, not a backup
In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Keep my files removes installed applications and many settings; it is not a verified backup and is not guaranteed to preserve every configuration. Remove everything is destructive. Depending on the release, you may also see Cloud download for a fresh Windows copy or Local reinstall. Back up first whenever possible. Details: Reset your PC.

Black screen or no display
First test monitor input, cable, graphics outputs, and peripherals. If the PC reaches WinRE on another display, use Safe Mode to remove or roll back the graphics driver. A totally blank screen before any logo is more likely hardware or firmware than Windows Update.
Endless Automatic Repair or restart loop
Use Advanced options once, then try Startup Repair, uninstall the latest quality update, System Restore, and Safe Mode. If the SSD is not detected, stop software troubleshooting.

Record the stop code, disconnect new hardware, and use Safe Mode or System Restore. Storage, encryption, and drivers are common possibilities; the update may only have exposed an existing fault.

BitLocker recovery
Locate the recovery key through the Microsoft account or managing organization. Do not choose Reset or erase the drive because the key is not immediately available.
“Go back to the previous version of Windows”
This is different from uninstalling a cumulative quality update. It applies to a recent feature upgrade and is generally available for about 10 days, sometimes disappearing sooner after cleanup removes rollback files. Find it under Settings > System > Recovery when Windows still starts, or use the available recovery option.
When to stop and get help
- The drive is missing from BIOS/UEFI, disappearing, or making unusual noises.
- The PC shuts off instantly or shows no power activity.
- Your data is irreplaceable and not backed up.
- BitLocker is enabled and the recovery key is unavailable.
- The device belongs to an employer or school; IT may control updates, encryption, and recovery keys.
- A reset or reinstall could violate business, regulatory, or licensing requirements.
For prevention, maintain a separate file backup, record the BitLocker key, and create recovery media periodically. A recovery drive does not contain personal files: Microsoft’s recovery-drive guidance. Windows Backup and OneDrive can protect ordinary folders, but the free Microsoft account allowance is 5 GB and Windows Backup is primarily consumer-focused; it is not a complete disk image. Dedicated backup services can help before a failure, but no backup product can recover files it never uploaded or repair a failed Windows installation after the fact.

Use the least destructive path that matches the symptom: verify power, display, and drive detection; enter WinRE; run Startup Repair; uninstall the latest quality update; then try System Restore, Safe Mode, and carefully verified repairs. Protect data and the BitLocker key before Reset or a clean installation, and treat an undetected or failing drive as a hardware/data-recovery problem rather than an update problem.
