Yes—Ubuntu is a viable PC-gaming platform in 2026, particularly for Steam libraries, but it is not a complete Windows replacement. Native Linux games and many Windows titles run well through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. Unsupported anti-cheat, some live-service games, VR hardware, Game Pass PC, launchers, and proprietary peripherals remain important exceptions. Check your must-play games before switching; if even one Windows-only title is essential, dual-booting is the safest plan.
What “gaming on Ubuntu” actually means
There are three different experiences:
- Native Linux games: Built for Linux and usually the simplest option. They do not need Proton.
- Windows games through Proton: Proton is Valve’s Wine-based compatibility software integrated into Steam Play. It is not a virtual machine and does not require a separate Windows installation. Compatibility is title-specific.
- Non-Steam Windows games: Epic, GOG, Amazon, Battle.net and older installers normally use Wine, Proton-GE or another runner through Heroic, Lutris, Bottles or manual configuration. These tools are more hands-on than Steam.
Canonical’s Proton instructions and ProtonDB are useful starting points. ProtonDB is community evidence, not a guarantee: reports can age badly after a game, driver, Proton or anti-cheat update.
What works well
Ubuntu is a strong fit for Steam-heavy libraries, single-player and co-op games, indie releases, older Windows games, controller-based gaming and emulation. Many mainstream games work through Proton with little or no adjustment. Steam Input often gives Xbox, PlayStation and generic XInput controllers consistent mappings.
Steam Deck compatibility is a useful signal, but it is not an Ubuntu certification. Deck hardware, compositor, controller configuration and target resolution differ from a general Ubuntu PC.

What still fails or needs caution
The largest limitation is publisher policy, especially anti-cheat. Valve documents technical support for Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but every developer must enable Proton support for its own game. Kernel-space anti-cheat is not supported by Proton. A game may launch perfectly offline while online play is blocked. See Valve’s Proton and anti-cheat documentation.
Expect additional risk with competitive live-service games, Game Pass PC, some third-party launchers, certain DRM systems, Windows-only mod managers, proprietary mouse/RGB utilities, racing wheels and HOTAS hardware, and many VR configurations. Do not rely on a permanent list of “working” or “broken” games; check current reports for each title.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS or 24.04 LTS?
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS was released on April 23, 2026 and is the current LTS. It brings newer hardware enablement, Linux kernel 7.0, improved power features and NTSYNC support that may improve some Wine/Proton workloads. “May” matters: NTSYNC is not a universal frame-rate guarantee.

Choose 26.04 for a new gaming installation, especially with current AMD, Intel or NVIDIA hardware. Choose 24.04 LTS when a particular driver, VR package, peripheral, troubleshooting guide or game tool explicitly targets it and you value the more established baseline. Steam requires a 64-bit x86_64 Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS system; its small client requirements are not realistic requirements for modern AAA games. Actual performance depends on the game, GPU, CPU, RAM, storage and resolution.
Install the graphics stack first
NVIDIA
Use Ubuntu’s recommended proprietary driver rather than assuming Nouveau is suitable for gaming. Ubuntu’s dedicated-GPU guide recommends 32-bit NVIDIA libraries as well as the normal 64-bit driver:

Modern AMD and Intel systems generally use the open Mesa/Vulkan stack. New GPU generations can still need newer kernels or Mesa than an older LTS provides. Ubuntu 26.04 includes newer hardware support and hardware-accelerated VA-API video encoding and decoding by default for supported AMD and Intel hardware. Brand slogans such as “AMD always works” and “NVIDIA never works” are outdated; generation, driver version and game requirements matter more.
Useful checks are:

nvidia-smivulkaninfo may require the Vulkan tools package, and command availability varies by installation.
Install Steam: snap or Valve’s package?
Ubuntu documents a Steam snap at ubuntu.com/docs/steam, with automatic updates and bundled tools such as MangoHud. Valve documents an official .deb package in its Steam for Linux instructions:

gdebi steam_latest.debNeither format is universally “best.” The snap is Canonical-supported and isolated, but sandbox permissions can affect external libraries, mods and unusual integrations. The .deb follows a conventional system layout and is the route Valve’s SteamVR guidance expects, but depends more directly on host libraries. Flatpak offers broad availability and sandboxing, while permissions can complicate game folders and mod tools. For ordinary Steam gaming, either documented route is reasonable. For VR or complicated external-library setups, follow the relevant Ubuntu and Valve documentation.

- Open Steam and go to Settings → Steam Play.
- Enable Enable Steam Play for supported titles.
- Enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles if you want to test unverified games.
- For one game, right-click it, choose Properties → Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select a Proton version.
Start with the Proton version Steam recommends. If a title fails, try one earlier stable release or Proton Experimental. Custom Proton-GE can help with game-specific fixes. For the Steam snap, Canonical documents this directory:

mkdir -p ~/snap/steam/common/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.dExtract Proton-GE there and restart Steam. A .deb or Flatpak installation uses a different Steam data path, so copying this command blindly is a common failure.
Check your library before switching
Make a list of essential games and check each one for:
- Recent ProtonDB reports and hardware-specific notes
- Anti-cheat technology and online multiplayer status
- Required launchers or DRM
- Mods and mod managers
- VR, wheel, HOTAS and controller requirements
- HDR, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation needs

Epic, GOG and Amazon libraries
Heroic Games Launcher is free and open source and supports Epic, GOG and Amazon Prime Games. Its Linux quick-start guide uses Flatpak:

flatpak install com.heroicgameslauncher.hglSign in, open Wine Manager, install a current Proton-GE build, then install games from your library. Ownership does not guarantee compatibility: launchers, online services and anti-cheat remain game-specific. GOG’s DRM-free installers can be flexible, though less automatic. Lutris (lutris.net) is a flexible, more hands-on option for multiple sources and older games. Bottles (usebottles.com) is useful for isolated Wine prefixes; neither is required for a normal Steam setup.

Basic wired, Bluetooth, Xbox, PlayStation and generic XInput controllers often work, but per-game input implementations differ. Racing wheels, HOTAS devices, RGB software and vendor configuration utilities need separate checks.
Steam Workshop is generally easier than Windows-only mod managers. External managers may work in Wine and may need their own prefix. Back up saves before changing Proton versions or prefixes, and be especially cautious with mods in anti-cheat games.

NTFS libraries can introduce permission, case-sensitivity, symlink, locking and executable-bit problems. When a Proton game behaves strangely, test it on an internal Linux filesystem if possible. This is a practical recommendation, not an absolute requirement; sandbox permissions can also affect snap and Flatpak libraries.

SteamVR on Linux has a narrower support picture than ordinary desktop gaming. Valve’s Linux SteamVR guidance expects the official Steam .deb package; NVIDIA users need the proprietary driver because Nouveau lacks the required Vulkan support. Headsets, base stations, tracking, wireless streaming, compositor behavior and controllers can each fail independently. If VR is your primary use, do not infer suitability from ordinary Proton success.
Performance expectations
Ubuntu is not inherently faster than Windows. Results depend on the GPU driver, kernel, Mesa version, Proton build, Vulkan implementation, shader compilation, game engine, CPU scheduling, compositor, power profile, resolution and translation overhead. Ubuntu’s Steam snap includes MangoHud for on-screen performance information. Compare only on the same hardware, game settings and versions.
A systematic troubleshooting order
- Check current ProtonDB reports and whether anti-cheat is the known blocker.
- Confirm the intended GPU and working Vulkan stack.
- Try the recommended Proton version, one prior stable version, then Proton Experimental.
- Disable overlays, mods, third-party launchers and custom launch options; verify files.
- Check Steam snap, Flatpak or filesystem access to the library.
- Test a clean prefix only after backing up saves and locating save data.
- Record Ubuntu, kernel, Mesa/NVIDIA, Proton and game versions before searching logs or issue trackers.
If a game works offline but not online, suspect anti-cheat, authentication or publisher policy rather than your graphics settings. If an external drive is visible but games do not launch, investigate mount permissions, sandbox access, NTFS behavior, execute permissions and case sensitivity. Do not delete prefixes or install random Wine versions as a first step.
Should you dual-boot?
Dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows when an unsupported competitive game, Game Pass PC, VR title or proprietary peripheral is non-negotiable—or when your hardware is unusual and you cannot test it first. A second SSD is the cleanest arrangement because it separates operating systems and libraries, but it is not required. Keep Windows available until every essential game has passed a real test.

- Steam single-player or indie gamer: Ubuntu 26.04 is a strong choice.
- Competitive multiplayer player: Keep Windows available and verify anti-cheat title by title.
- Laptop gamer: Ubuntu can work well, but test hybrid graphics, suspend, battery life and vendor controls.
- New Linux user: Steam is approachable; expect occasional game-specific research.
- Mod-heavy gamer: Prefer titles with native or Workshop support, or retain Windows.
- VR user: Treat Linux as experimental unless your exact headset and software path are documented.
- Game Pass user: Windows remains the straightforward platform.
- Tinkering enthusiast: Ubuntu offers a capable, controllable platform with plenty to optimize.
