Paged.js turns HTML into a paginated, print-oriented layout that you can inspect in a browser and export as a PDF. For precise results, start with semantic HTML and deliberate print CSS, use the Paged.js preview to refine page breaks and page furniture, and generate the final PDF in the same browser and operating-system environment you used for layout work. The final browser print settings matter too: use no margins, disable browser-added headers and footers, and enable background graphics.

What Paged.js does—and what it does not do

Paged.js is an open-source JavaScript library for paginating HTML content. It processes print-oriented declarations into pages and provides a browser preview of that paginated document. The Paged.js documentation describes the goal as producing print-ready PDFs from HTML. It is useful for books, reports, and other documents where page geometry, repeated page elements, and controlled pagination matter.

Paged.js handles the pagination and preview stage; a browser is still involved in producing the PDF. You can use the browser’s Save as PDF flow for a hands-on process or automate output with a headless browser. The documentation establishes those two routes, but the cited setup material does not establish a current package release, a current browser compatibility matrix, or version-specific command-line syntax. Treat those details as something to verify against the version you install rather than assuming an old example still applies.

It is also important to distinguish a paginated PDF from a screenshot. A screenshot captures a rendered view as an image; it does not provide Paged.js pagination, document page structure, or PDF output.

Prepare the HTML and print stylesheet

Start with semantic document structure

Organize the source as a document before styling it: use meaningful headings, paragraphs, lists, figures, tables, and navigation landmarks where they fit. This gives the print stylesheet clear units to format and makes it easier to identify which content needs special page treatment. Avoid using visual spacing alone to communicate structure.

Keep screen presentation and print presentation separate where useful. Print-specific rules can define how the document should look on paper without forcing the on-screen version to use the same layout. Paged.js processes print declarations into its paginated view, so inspect that view rather than assuming that a screen layout will translate to pages unchanged.

Set page geometry intentionally

Use page rules to define the intended page size and margins, then check the result in the browser preview. Page dimensions affect available line length, wrapping, and where content falls; changing them late can move material across many pages. The Paged.js printing specifications documentation cautions that a browser can understand only one page size for a document. If a project appears to require different page sizes within one document, do not assume the browser will honor every variation as intended—verify the actual paginated output in your chosen environment.

Margins are part of the layout, not an afterthought. Allow room for running heads, footers, page numbers, and binding needs when relevant. A PDF can be technically complete yet still feel imprecise if text is cramped against an edge or repeated page elements collide with the main content.

Use a small, inspectable CSS starting point

The following is a basic print-CSS scaffold, not a complete book design. Adjust page dimensions and margins to the publication’s actual requirements, then verify the rendered page size and breaks in the Paged.js preview.

@media print {
  @page {
    size: A4;
    margin: 20mm;
  }

  body {
    margin: 0;
  }
}

This CSS expresses a single page size, which is consistent with the documented browser limitation. It does not by itself load Paged.js, create page numbers, or export a PDF; those steps depend on the library setup and browser workflow you choose.

Inspect the paginated preview before exporting

Load your HTML and stylesheet with Paged.js, then use its browser preview as the working proof. Review the document page by page, not only the first page or a continuous scrolling view. The preview is where you can catch overflow, awkward breaks, unexpected blank space, and page furniture that overlaps the content before committing to an export.

  • Check that headings are not stranded at the bottom of a page without the section content that follows.
  • Look for paragraphs, list items, table rows, and figures split in ways that make the page hard to read.
  • Inspect the first and last pages as well as representative pages in the middle; opening and closing matter can have different layout needs.
  • Review long documents after edits that affect text length, fonts, page geometry, or image dimensions, since each can shift later page breaks.

Make one class of layout change at a time when diagnosing a bad break. For example, confirm page size and margins before adjusting local spacing. Otherwise, one change may conceal the effect of another and make the layout harder to maintain.

Add running heads, page numbers, and navigation

Paged.js documentation describes generated content for the features that make a long document navigable: running heads and footers, page numbers, tables of contents, indexes, and cross-references. These elements belong to the paged-document layer rather than being treated as ordinary text copied manually onto every page.

Decide which elements the reader needs before implementing them. A short report may need only page numbers; a book may benefit from running heads, a contents list, and cross-references. After adding generated content, inspect pages where section names change, where a heading is long, and where front matter or back matter uses a different arrangement. Do not assume that a correctly styled running head will fit every possible title.

The documentation establishes these capabilities at the concept level, but the material available here does not establish current syntax for every generated-content feature. Use the documentation matching your installed Paged.js version for exact declarations and examples, and validate the rendered result rather than copying an unverified legacy snippet.

Choose browser Save as PDF or headless automation

Consideration Browser Save as PDF Headless-browser workflow
Best fit Interactive inspection and a person reviewing each export. Automated generation as part of a repeatable production workflow.
Settings path Set print options in the browser dialog. Configure the browser through your automation setup; exact options depend on the tool and version.
Environment control Record which browser and operating system produced the reviewed file. Pin and reuse the browser and operating-system environment used for layout checks.

Manual export

  1. Open the Paged.js-paginated document in the browser environment used for preview and layout work.
  2. Open the browser’s print flow and choose Save as PDF.
  3. In the print settings, set margins to none, turn off browser-added headers and footers, and turn on background graphics, as directed by the Paged.js getting-started guide.
  4. Save the PDF, then open the saved file and inspect page dimensions, breaks, backgrounds, and repeated elements.

Browser print options can add their own margins or header/footer text independently of the page design. That can shift content or introduce unwanted material even when the Paged.js preview looks correct, so make these settings part of the export checklist.

Automated export

Paged.js can be used in an automated workflow with a headless browser. This is useful when PDFs need to be regenerated from changing HTML, but automation is only repeatable when the inputs and rendering environment are controlled. Keep the same browser and operating system for layout checks and generation, and explicitly configure the print behavior in the automation tool you choose.

The Paged.js material reviewed here does not establish current headless-browser commands, a particular automation package, or the current status of a documented CLI page-size option. Avoid treating a command copied from an older guide as a guaranteed current interface. Check the documentation for your installed browser and automation versions, then test a small document before building the command into production.

Make rendering consistent across machines

The Paged.js printing specifications documentation reports that browser and operating-system differences can affect output, including hyphenation behavior. It recommends using the same browser and operating system for design and PDF generation. This is a practical reproducibility rule: a layout approved on one system should not be assumed pixel-identical on another.

The documentation pages cited for these details date from 2019. They explain core workflow considerations but do not establish a present-day browser-by-browser support matrix. Browser versions and behavior can change, so verify the exact environment you plan to use rather than interpreting older compatibility notes as current guarantees.

  • Keep the browser and OS consistent between previewing and exporting.
  • After changing either environment, regenerate and review the PDF, especially page dimensions and page breaks.
  • Test documents that rely on hyphenation in the actual production environment.
  • Record the environment used for an approved output so later regeneration can be compared meaningfully.

Troubleshoot common precision problems

The PDF margins or page contents do not match the preview

Check the browser print dialog first. Browser-added margins, headers, or footers can change the output independently of the paginated preview. Follow the guide’s export settings: no margins, browser headers and footers off, and background graphics on. Save a new PDF and inspect that file rather than relying only on the preview.

Background colors or images are missing

Confirm that the browser’s background graphics option is enabled for the PDF export. The Paged.js getting-started guide specifically calls out this setting. Then inspect the resulting PDF to distinguish a print-dialog setting from a problem in the document’s own styling.

Page breaks change on another computer

First compare the browser and operating system used for layout with those used for generation. Paged.js documentation notes cross-browser and cross-OS differences and recommends using the same environment. If the change followed an environment switch, render and review again in the intended production environment before adjusting CSS to compensate.

Hyphenation looks different

Hyphenation may vary across browser and operating-system combinations. Test the affected text in the browser/OS environment that will produce the final PDF. The older documentation does not establish which present-day versions behave identically, so verify rather than assuming compatibility.

A document seems to need more than one page size

The documented browser constraint is one page size for a document. Reconsider whether the content can use a single geometry, or test any mixed-size requirement directly in the selected browser and Paged.js setup. Do not infer support for multiple page sizes from a stylesheet declaration alone.

A command-line example or feature does not work

Check the version-specific Paged.js, browser, and automation documentation. The available official material does not establish current CLI behavior, so a page-size option or command from older documentation may not match the version in use. Confirm the installed versions and test a minimal document before applying the approach to a full publication.
