Proxy Saver is Scrapfly middleware that sits in front of an Oxylabs proxy. It can reduce the bytes Oxylabs has to transfer by caching repeat responses, blocking ads and other unwanted assets, compressing traffic, and stubbing nonessential content. Scrapfly says these measures can save up to 30% of bandwidth, but that is a vendor claim, not an independently verified benchmark.

Your actual result depends on cacheability, repeat-request volume, page composition, freshness requirements, and whether your crawler needs every asset. The reliable way to decide is to measure the same workload with and without the middleware, then compare the combined cost with a cheaper Oxylabs plan.

What Proxy Saver changes in an Oxylabs request

Oxylabs remains the upstream proxy provider. Proxy Saver is a Scrapfly optimization layer, or man-in-the-middle, between your application and Oxylabs. Your code sends a request through Proxy Saver; Proxy Saver applies its policies and forwards only the traffic that still needs to reach the target through Oxylabs.

Supported connection types and Oxylabs settings

Scrapfly documents HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 connections. It can forward Oxylabs parameters such as country selection and session settings, so geo-targeting and IP continuity do not have to be abandoned simply to reduce transfer volume. Scrapfly also lists fingerprint impersonation, automatic retries, and connection fixes, but those reliability features should be evaluated separately from byte savings.

The four byte-saving mechanisms

  • Automatic caching: A repeatable response can be served from Proxy Saver rather than fetched again through the upstream proxy. Scrapfly says its cache covers results, redirects, and CORS requests.
  • Ad and unwanted-content blocking: Advertising, trackers, and other configured resources are stopped before they consume upstream bandwidth.
  • Compression: Responses are compressed in transit, reducing transferred bytes where the origin and client support it.
  • Data stubbing: Nonessential content is replaced with a smaller representation or omitted. This is useful when your parser needs the page structure but not every image, video, or third-party payload.

The mechanisms can be combined. For example, a cache hit avoids an upstream request entirely, while blocking and compression reduce the size of requests that still have to pass through Oxylabs.

When each mechanism lowers your bill

Caching repeated pages and assets

Caching has the clearest relationship to a bandwidth-based residential or mobile bill: a valid cache hit transfers no new copy through Oxylabs. It is most effective for product pages, shared scripts, documentation, redirects, and other resources requested repeatedly by many workers.

Before enabling a long time-to-live, classify the data you collect. Prices, inventory, account pages, feeds, and personalized responses may become incorrect if served from an old cache. Keep short TTLs, bypass rules, or no-cache behavior for volatile or user-specific endpoints. A high hit rate is not automatically good if it produces stale data that must be fetched again or invalidates downstream results.

Blocking ads, trackers, and heavy third-party resources

Ad-heavy pages can contain more third-party bytes than the article or product data your application actually uses. Blocking those resources reduces transfer while usually leaving the primary HTML available. Oxylabs itself describes HTTP proxies as saving bandwidth through compression, caching files, and reducing ads, particularly on ad-heavy websites.

Blocking can change page behavior. Some sites load content only after an analytics, consent, or advertising script runs. Start with a narrow block list, verify that the fields you need still appear, and expand it only after measuring extraction accuracy.

Compression

Compression helps when large HTML, JSON, CSS, or text responses are repeatedly transferred. Its benefit is smaller for already-compressed JPEG, PNG, WebP, ZIP, and video files. Measure the bytes billed by your Oxylabs account rather than assuming that an application-level content length exactly matches provider accounting.

Rank #2

Stubbing content you do not consume

Stubbing is appropriate when your workload needs metadata or document text but not every embedded object. It is risky for browser automation that depends on images, fonts, JavaScript bundles, or video dimensions. Keep a completeness test alongside your bandwidth test: a lower bill is not a saving if missing assets cause retries, failed parsing, or manual reprocessing.

How much can you save?

Scrapfly publishes a claim of up to 30% bandwidth savings (September 26, 2025). No independent savings benchmark or customer-specific return-on-investment data was established. Treat 30% as an upper vendor assertion, not a forecast for your crawler.

Results vary with six measurable factors:

  • the proportion of repeat requests that can be cached;
  • the size and number of ads, trackers, and other removable resources;
  • the amount of text that compresses well versus binary media that does not;
  • how much content can safely be stubbed;
  • your cache freshness and personalization rules; and
  • retries, JavaScript dependencies, and target-site failures introduced by filtering.

A workload dominated by unique, uncachable pages and image downloads may see little benefit. A workload revisiting the same ad-heavy pages can see a larger reduction. Only a controlled before-and-after run can establish your number.

Compare Proxy Saver with changing Oxylabs plans

Middleware is not automatically cheaper than selecting a lower-cost proxy product. Compare the combined recurring cost of Proxy Saver and Oxylabs with the price of an alternative Oxylabs plan, while keeping success rate, geography, sessions, and data completeness constant.

Option or reference Published price or claim What it means for the decision
Oxylabs self-service residential $8 per GB; 1 GB minimum top-up; 50 GB maximum monthly top-up (Oxylabs billing page, crawled 2026) Useful baseline for a bandwidth-heavy residential workload. Prices and limits can change.
Oxylabs shared datacenter $0.65/GB at $50 + VAT monthly; $0.60/GB at $100; $0.55/GB at $200; $0.50/GB at $300 (Oxylabs page, crawled 2026) A cheaper per-GB model when datacenter IPs meet your target-site and geography requirements.
Scrapfly Proxy Saver Up to 30% bandwidth savings (Scrapfly, September 26, 2025) A vendor claim; add the current Proxy Saver charge to the remaining Oxylabs bill.

Shared datacenter proxies may be the better economic choice for public, low-risk targets that do not require residential reputation or precise residential geography. Residential proxies can remain necessary when the site blocks datacenter ranges or when a residential exit is part of your compliance and targeting requirements. Oxylabs advertises more than 175 million residential IPs across more than 195 countries; those figures are current vendor assertions, not evidence that Proxy Saver itself saves a particular amount.

A practical break-even calculation

Record a baseline billable volume B in GB for a fixed workload, then run the same URLs, concurrency, geo, and session rules through Proxy Saver to obtain M. Your estimated byte reduction is (B - M) / B. The monthly decision is:

baseline Oxylabs cost - (Oxylabs cost after Proxy Saver + Proxy Saver fee + operating overhead)

Use the actual rate for your Oxylabs product. Include engineering time, cache storage, re-fetches caused by stale data, and any additional requests caused by failed filtering. Do not count a response as a successful saving unless the extracted fields pass your normal validation.

Keep Oxylabs sessions and geo targeting stable

Session persistence and bandwidth reduction solve different problems. Oxylabs documents a sessid- authentication parameter for keeping the same proxy IP across multiple requests. A stable session can improve login flows, carts, or multi-step pages, but it does not by itself reduce the number of bytes transferred.

In a controlled test, hold the following constant:

  • the Oxylabs country or city target;
  • the session identifier and session lifetime;
  • request headers, cookies, and user-agent behavior;
  • concurrency and retry limits; and
  • the URL list and browser or HTTP client version.

Changing any of these at the same time as enabling caching makes the result difficult to attribute. Also check that a cached response is not shared across users or geographies when it contains session-specific data.

Run a before-and-after test yourself

You do not need a full browser to establish a first estimate. Use a representative sample that includes repeated URLs, unique URLs, redirects, large assets, and the geographies you actually use. Run it once directly through your normal Oxylabs configuration and once through Proxy Saver.

  1. Freeze the workload. Save the exact URL list, request headers, cookies, session identifiers, concurrency, and retry policy.
  2. Capture transfer measurements. Log response status, downloaded bytes, elapsed time, cache status if exposed, and whether the required fields were present.
  3. Repeat enough to exercise the cache. A single pass mostly measures first-fetch behavior. A second pass reveals cache hits and freshness effects.
  4. Check completeness. Compare extracted records, image or document requirements, and error counts against the direct run.
  5. Reconcile billing. Compare provider usage for the same time window with your client-side byte logs. Investigate discrepancies before extrapolating.

A simple shell measurement for a URL already configured in your environment is:

curl -sS -x "$PROXY_URL" -o /dev/null -w 'status=%{http_code} bytes=%{size_download} time=%{time_total}n' "https://example.com/page"

Set PROXY_URL to the proxy endpoint supplied in your Oxylabs or Proxy Saver configuration; do not substitute a guessed host or credential format. Repeat the command with identical settings for the comparison run, then aggregate the logged bytes and validation results.

Or skip the browser setup

If the separate job is capturing rendered webpages rather than collecting raw proxy responses, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can call its take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools through MCP.

Use the API as documented at ScreenshotNeo docs:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting and failure modes

Bandwidth did not fall

Check whether requests are unique, responses are marked uncacheable, or the workload is dominated by already-compressed media. Verify that the cache is actually being reached and that your comparison used the same URL mix and session rules. If Proxy Saver has no control over an origin’s cache headers for your use case, a large reduction may not be possible without accepting staleness.

Pages are incomplete after filtering

Disable the newest block or stub rule, identify which selector or resource the parser needs, and re-enable rules incrementally. Keep essential JavaScript, fonts, or API calls for browser-dependent pages. A targeted allowlist is safer than blocking an entire resource type.

Responses are stale or cross-user

Shorten the TTL, bypass caching for personalized endpoints, and vary the cache key for cookies, authorization, country, and session identifiers. Never share a cached authenticated response between users.

More retries increased traffic

Inspect retry logs and origin status codes. A filter that causes JavaScript or challenge failures can create more upstream attempts than it saves. Cap retries, preserve the original error for analysis, and compare successful records rather than requests alone.

Sessions or geo targeting changed

Confirm that the Oxylabs country and session parameters are forwarded unchanged and that your sessid- value remains stable for the intended workflow. Test one session at a time before restoring concurrency.

Billing does not match client byte counts

Provider accounting can include protocol overhead or apply its own definition of billable traffic. Use Oxylabs usage data as the financial source of truth and use client logs to explain differences, not to replace the invoice.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Proxy Saver when repeat requests, removable third-party payloads, compression, or safe stubbing represent a meaningful share of traffic.
  • Prefer a cheaper Oxylabs shared datacenter plan when your targets accept datacenter IPs and the per-GB difference outweighs middleware and operating costs.
  • Keep residential service when residential reputation, geography, or target success requires it; optimize the traffic before changing the IP class.
  • Separate session stability, target-site success, and data completeness from byte reduction in every test.
  • Recheck current Oxylabs limits, prices, and Scrapfly terms before committing, because the published figures can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Proxy Saver an Oxylabs product?

No. It is Scrapfly middleware; Oxylabs remains the upstream proxy provider.

Will caching always reduce residential proxy charges?

No. It helps only when responses are reusable and the cache hit avoids an upstream transfer. Unique, uncachable, or highly personalized requests may see little benefit.

Does a persistent Oxylabs session lower bandwidth usage?

Not by itself. The documented sessid- parameter keeps an IP stable; caching, filtering, compression, and stubbing are the byte-reduction mechanisms.

What should I measure before rolling out Proxy Saver?

Measure billable GB, cache hits, successful records, required-field completeness, retries, latency, and geo/session behavior on the same workload before and after the change.

The Bottom Line

Proxy Saver can lower Oxylabs bandwidth costs when it turns repeatable, ad-heavy, or unnecessarily large responses into fewer upstream bytes. Its advertised ceiling is up to 30%, not a guarantee. Measure your own workload, include the middleware fee and data-quality effects, and compare the result with Oxylabs shared datacenter pricing before switching plans.
