OwnTone is a self-hosted music server and playback controller for people who want to index local audio, share it with compatible clients, and play it on network speakers. It offers DAAP for iTunes and Apple Music on supported desktop clients, an MPD control interface, and RSP for Roku SoundBridge-era hardware—alongside AirPlay, Chromecast, a web interface, and a JSON API. It is not a replacement for Apple Music’s cloud catalog or a general-purpose video server.
OwnTone was previously called forked-daapd, which traces its history to mt-daapd/Firefly. The project changelog lists version 29.3 dated July 22, 2026, while the GitHub releases page has surfaced 29.2 as its latest release. Check the project’s releases and your distribution’s package version before installing.
What OwnTone does
OwnTone brings several jobs together: it scans music folders into a library database, serves that library over network protocols, accepts remote playback controls, and routes audio to selected outputs. Its web interface and JSON API provide additional ways to browse, control playback, and automate tasks. The project supports GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS; it can run on modest hardware, although transcoding and multiroom playback add resource and network demands. DAAP, MPD and RSP: what each protocol is for

DAAP is most compelling when you already rely on desktop iTunes or Music to reach files on your own network. Compatibility depends on the client and operating-system version, and Apple can change client behavior. Test the exact client you intend to use rather than treating “DAAP support” as a promise that every Apple Music feature works. OwnTone serves its own indexed files; DRM-protected subscription tracks should not be treated as ordinary local files. The project lists its DAAP clients in the README.
MPD clients can be an alternative control surface, including web clients such as ympd. They control OwnTone’s playback system and selected output; they do not necessarily manage a separate MPD daemon. Optional MPD HTTP streaming and other features depend on version and build configuration.
RSP is the narrowest and most legacy-oriented part of the protocol mix. OwnTone’s documentation refers to Roku devices, while the project README specifically names Roku SoundBridge. Verify your precise model before choosing OwnTone for a Roku setup.
Clients, content and playback destinations
OwnTone’s documented ecosystem includes iTunes on Windows, Apple Music on macOS, Rhythmbox on Linux, MPD clients, browser control, Roku SoundBridge-era devices, AirPlay receivers, and Chromecast receivers. Output can also use the server’s local audio system and browser- or MP3-capable clients. AirPlay 1 and AirPlay 2 support can make OwnTone useful for multiroom audio, but pairing, timing, speaker firmware, multicast discovery, and network layout can affect reliability. Start with one receiver, confirm stable playback, then add other rooms.
The library can include local music, podcasts, audiobooks, internet radio, and—if enabled in the build—Spotify integration. Spotify playback requires a Spotify Premium account and authorization. Spotify integration is not a way to redistribute subscription audio through DAAP. Format support is broad but depends on the installed FFmpeg-related libraries, build options, transcoding settings, target client, and available CPU. A file that scans successfully may still need transcoding or fail on a particular endpoint.
Choose OwnTone if its protocols solve your problem
- A good fit: a local-first music library; existing iTunes/Music DAAP workflow; MPD-client control; AirPlay or Chromecast playback; or automation through the JSON API.
- Consider another tool: if you need a polished video library, broad smart-TV apps, cloud music synchronization, turnkey remote access, or universal compatibility with modern Roku products.
OwnTone is audio-focused, not a direct feature-for-feature substitute for Plex or Jellyfin. Navidrome is worth considering for a modern Subsonic-compatible browser and mobile streaming setup; Jellyfin or Plex are more appropriate when video and broader household media dominate; Logitech Media Server suits households invested in Squeezebox hardware. A dedicated DAAP server may be simpler if DAAP is your only requirement. These tools target different workflows, so compare required clients and outputs rather than relying on generic “best media server” rankings.
Install OwnTone
Prefer a maintained package for your operating system when its version and build options meet your needs. Packages can differ in enabled features: check whether MPD, Spotify, web sockets, and the audio backends you need were included. Build from source when you specifically need the documented build or want control over configuration. The project’s building guide is authoritative; the Debian/Ubuntu source-build outline below is not a universal recommendation for every distribution.

sudo make installThe documented configuration location is normally /etc/owntone.conf. With the documented systemd installation, start and inspect the service using:
sudo systemctl start owntone
sudo systemctl status owntoneThe source-build option --enable-install-user adds an OwnTone user and group; service-account names and service installation can differ with distribution packages or other installation methods. Check the service definition and configured uid rather than assuming the account is always named owntone.
Point OwnTone at your library and check permissions
Add media folders in the library section of /etc/owntone.conf. For example:

}The service account needs read access to each media directory and permission to traverse every parent directory. It also needs write access to its database, cache, and log locations. Local playback can require access to the relevant audio device. An empty library is often a permissions or path problem, not a protocol problem.
Check directory traversal and test file visibility as the service user, adjusting the account if your package uses another name:

sudo -u owntone find /srv/music -type f | headConsult the configuration guide for database, cache, log, output, and UID settings. Avoid broad permissions such as making the entire music tree world-writable; grant only the access the service needs.

First run and library scanning
Open the web interface at http://owntone.local:3689. If the .local name does not resolve, try http://SERVER_ADDRESS:3689. The usual web port is 3689; the WebSocket port is commonly 3688 in the API documentation’s example, but it is configurable. Use the configured values rather than assuming defaults. The getting-started guide covers the web interface and initial setup.

The first scan takes longer because files must be analyzed; subsequent scans can focus on changes. After editing library directories, use Update library in the web interface or issue the documented API request:

NAS mounts and network libraries
SMB, NFS, and other network mounts may not send reliable filesystem change notifications to OwnTone. A newly added file might therefore remain absent until a rescan. The documented workaround is to configure a local trigger directory as well as the network library, then periodically touch the trigger file—for example, from cron:

touch /some/local/dir/trigger.init-rescanThe local directory is a scan trigger; it does not need to contain music. Also ensure the mount is available before OwnTone scans at startup. If it is not, check service ordering and mount availability, then trigger a scan after the share is mounted.

Opening a port and discovering a service are separate matters. The web page may work by IP while iTunes, Music, AirPlay, or Chromecast cannot find the server. Those services commonly rely on Bonjour/mDNS or related multicast discovery. Avahi on Linux, firewall rules, Wi-Fi client isolation, VLAN boundaries, VPNs, and container networking can all affect whether advertisements reach a client.
When discovery fails, first test the web interface by server IP. If it works, check that Avahi/Bonjour is running, the relevant ports are allowed, and client and server share a network where multicast discovery can pass. Across routed subnets, you may need an mDNS reflector or a network/VPN design that supports service discovery. Simply allowing TCP 3689 does not relay Bonjour advertisements.

If you run multiple OwnTone instances, assign each a unique library/service name, DAAP port, MPD port, WebSocket port, and database path. The project’s multiple-instances guide notes that full AirPlay 2 compatibility in multi-instance deployments requires the airptpd daemon.
The OwnTone organization lists a separate container project, but deployment details should be taken from its current instructions, not copied from an unrelated image. A container needs persistent storage for database and cache, a correctly mounted library, aligned user/group permissions, and suitable port and multicast access. Bridge networking can isolate DAAP, AirPlay, Chromecast, and mDNS discovery; host networking or another multicast-aware arrangement may be needed, depending on the setup. Verify the chosen container’s current configuration before deploying.

Connect clients and outputs
iTunes, Apple Music and Rhythmbox
On the client, look for the shared library after OwnTone has started and completed scanning. Discovery normally depends on Bonjour/mDNS. The visible library contains OwnTone’s indexed local files; it is separate from an Apple account’s cloud catalog. If the server appears but browsing or playback fails, test a known supported file and check client-version behavior, transcoding, and server logs.
MPD clients
Point the client to the OwnTone host and its configured MPD port. Confirm MPD support is enabled in the installed build, select an OwnTone output in the web interface if needed, and check whether the client relies on MPD commands or database semantics OwnTone does not provide. The web interface documentation also mentions MPD web clients such as ympd as control alternatives.
Apple Remote pairing
For a compatible Apple Remote workflow, start the remote and choose Settings, then Add Library. Enter the displayed pairing code in the OwnTone web interface. If the request is not detected automatically, refresh the page. This pairs a remote-control client; it does not import an Apple Music cloud library. See the getting-started documentation.
AirPlay and Chromecast
Use the web interface to select available outputs and control playback. If a receiver is missing or intermittent, investigate multicast filtering, firewall rules, VLANs, IPv4/IPv6 behavior, pairing state, speaker firmware, and container network isolation. Test with one speaker and a straightforward track before diagnosing multiroom synchronization. Continued AirPlay fixes in the changelog show active maintenance, not a guarantee that every receiver/network combination is friction-free.

OwnTone documents remote DAAP access, but exposing a library service to the public internet is not a safe default. Prefer a VPN or private overlay, or use an SSH tunnel; restrict access at the firewall and do not leave an unauthenticated service open to anyone. The project’s remote-access guidance warns that direct internet access should be protected against unauthenticated users. Port forwarding alone is not a security plan.

Troubleshooting checklist
The service runs, but the library is empty
- Confirm the configured directory paths and whether the mount is present.
- Check traversal and read access as the actual service account; inspect
uidand the service definition. - Confirm database, cache, and log paths are writable and inspect the logs for scan errors.
- Trigger Update library in the web interface or send the rescan API request after fixing paths or permissions.
The web interface will not open
Try http://SERVER_IP:3689 instead of owntone.local, then check the service and listening port:
sudo systemctl status owntone
sudo ss -ltnp | grep 3689If nothing listens on that port, inspect the configuration and service logs; the port may have been changed or the service may not have started.
iTunes or Music cannot find the server
- Check Bonjour/Avahi and whether the DAAP service is advertised.
- Allow relevant traffic through the host firewall and disable Wi-Fi client isolation for testing.
- Put client and server on the same multicast-capable network, or configure appropriate mDNS relay for routed networks.
- Try direct-IP access to distinguish basic reachability from discovery failure; the web port working does not prove DAAP discovery works.
MPD connects but behaves unexpectedly
Verify that the build includes MPD support, that the client targets OwnTone’s configured MPD port, and that the desired output is selected. If only some controls fail, the client may expect MPD behavior that this OwnTone version does not implement.
NAS changes do not appear
Do not rely on real-time file notifications from every network filesystem. Request a manual rescan or implement the documented local trigger-file method on a schedule, and make sure the network mount is available before scanning.
Spotify is missing
Spotify support may have been omitted from the build. Check the installed feature/build configuration, confirm a Spotify Premium account, and complete the authorization flow in OwnTone.
One audio format or receiver fails
Check codec dependencies, transcoding configuration, client/receiver support, CPU capacity, and logs. For AirPlay, begin with one receiver and review multicast, pairing, firmware, and network conditions before adding speakers.
Is OwnTone the right server?
Choose OwnTone when you specifically value local-file ownership, desktop DAAP compatibility, MPD control, and network-audio outputs in one open-source server. Treat RSP as a legacy compatibility feature, and verify the exact Apple client, build, and speakers you plan to use. For remote streaming, a Subsonic-oriented service may be more convenient; for household video libraries, use a video-focused media server. OwnTone is strongest when its mix of protocols matches hardware and clients you already have—not when you expect one server to replace every streaming, cloud, and video service.
