If Outlook’s Mail, Calendar and other app shortcuts have moved from the bottom-left corner to a vertical bar on the left, the fix depends on which Outlook you use. In supported versions of classic Outlook for Windows, clear Show apps in Outlook in Advanced options to restore the traditional bottom navigation. New Outlook for Windows has no built-in setting to move its left app bar. The change was first reported on August 12, 2022; it is now an established difference between the two Outlook experiences.
What changed in Outlook?
Microsoft moved the controls for switching among Outlook views—such as Mail, Calendar, People or Contacts, and Tasks—from the traditional navigation area at the bottom left to a vertical app bar on the left side of the window. Depending on the Outlook version and configuration, the bar may also show links to other Microsoft 365 apps.
That app bar is not the same as the folder pane, which lists your mailbox folders. Nor does “app shortcuts” necessarily mean custom items created in Outlook’s separate Shortcuts feature, or shortcuts on the Windows desktop or taskbar. If a user-created Outlook Shortcut has disappeared, that is a different issue from Calendar or Mail changing position.

That was Microsoft’s design rationale—not evidence that the layout works better for everyone. The left rail can take up horizontal space and unsettle users accustomed to the classic bottom navigation.

First identify your Outlook version
This is the key to choosing the right fix:
- Classic Outlook for Windows: Usually has the traditional ribbon and a File tab in the upper-left corner. It may also show a Try the new Outlook switch. Microsoft documents the relevant Advanced option for Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016.
- New Outlook for Windows: Has a more modern, web-aligned interface and a different settings structure. Microsoft describes it as inspired by Outlook on the web. The left app bar is part of this experience, and there is no built-in setting to reposition it.
- Outlook on the web: Uses the web-style left-side navigation; the classic desktop option described below does not apply.
If your screen has no File tab, you are probably not in classic Outlook. Don’t follow classic Outlook instructions expecting them to change the new Outlook layout.
Restore bottom navigation in classic Outlook
In a supported classic Outlook build, use Microsoft’s documented setting:

- Open classic Outlook for Windows.
- Select File, then Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Under Outlook panes, clear Show apps in Outlook.
- Select OK.
- Close Outlook completely and reopen it.
Microsoft’s Advanced options documentation says that selecting Show apps in Outlook places the navigation bar on the left rather than in its traditional bottom-left position. Clearing it returns the classic arrangement; the Navigation option in the same area can be used to adjust navigation controls.

If “Show apps in Outlook” is missing
- Check the product: The option is for classic Outlook, not new Outlook or Outlook on the web. Look for the File tab.
- Check the deployment: Microsoft documents the setting for several classic Outlook editions, but the interface can vary by build, update channel and organization policy.
- Restart fully: If you changed the setting but the layout did not change, exit Outlook completely and reopen it.
- Check the pane: If the bottom navigation returns but Calendar is not visible, the navigation pane may be minimized or customized. Review the navigation controls under the same Advanced settings area.
- Make sure you are looking at the right element: The app bar is inside Outlook. It is not the Windows taskbar, the Microsoft 365 app launcher or the folder pane.
If this is a managed work or school installation, your organization may control the available interface or which Outlook client you can use. Avoid unofficial registry edits as a first-line fix: they can be version-dependent and are not a substitute for the documented setting.
Can you move the bar in new Outlook?
Not with a built-in setting, as of August 18, 2026. A Microsoft staff response dated July 20, 2026 says the new Outlook app bar is fixed on the far left and cannot be moved. The File > Options > Advanced > Show apps in Outlook instructions apply to classic Outlook only. Microsoft could change the new Outlook interface in a future update, but no such repositioning control is documented here.

If you cannot switch back to classic Outlook, that may reflect your installation, account or organization policy. Classic Outlook’s availability should not be assumed to continue indefinitely.

- Keep Calendar visible: Pin or retain Calendar in the left rail if your version offers that option.
- Try keyboard navigation: In many Outlook versions, Ctrl+1 opens Mail, Ctrl+2 Calendar, and Ctrl+3 People or Contacts. Shortcuts can differ by Outlook experience and configuration, so test them in your version.
- Use a separate browser tab: Open Outlook on the web in a browser for a separate Calendar workflow.
- Use classic Outlook if available: If your organization and Office installation still provide it, classic Outlook may offer both the older navigation layout and features you need.
- Send feedback: If the fixed rail creates an accessibility or workflow problem, report it through Outlook’s feedback option.
Why the change matters now
Windows Mail and Calendar are no longer a supported alternative: Microsoft says their support ended on December 31, 2024, with users directed toward new Outlook. Microsoft’s deployment documentation also says new Outlook is preinstalled on Windows 11 builds later than 23H2. These changes make it especially important to distinguish classic Outlook from new Outlook before trying to restore the old layout.
