Microsoft does not publish an official native Outlook desktop app for Linux. The supported option is Outlook on the web in a current browser; you can install it as a progressive web app (PWA) for a separate window and launcher icon. Thunderbird and Evolution offer Linux desktop email and groupware, but neither should be assumed to match Outlook’s full Microsoft 365 feature set.
Is there an official Outlook app for Linux?
No. Microsoft does not provide a Linux desktop download for Outlook, such as a Microsoft-published DEB, RPM, Flatpak, Snap, or AppImage. Outlook on the web and Outlook.com are supported in current Chrome or Firefox on Linux, though Microsoft notes that some features may be unavailable. Keep the product names distinct: Outlook on the web is Microsoft’s browser app for work or school Microsoft 365 and Exchange accounts; Outlook.com is its consumer email service. The Outlook PWA is the web app opened in an app-like browser window, not a native Linux mail client. New Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac are separate desktop products, not Linux versions.
Applications advertised as “Outlook for Linux” may be unofficial wrappers that display Outlook on the web inside a browser engine. They can add a launcher, tray icon, or notifications, but do not turn the web interface into Microsoft’s native Outlook client. Microsoft’s published route for Linux is browser-based.

Install Outlook as a PWA on Linux
A PWA gives Outlook its own window and can add it to your desktop application menu. It still relies on the web service and browser engine, and is not equivalent to classic Outlook for Windows.
In Chrome
- Update Chrome, then sign in to Outlook on the web or Outlook.com.
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Install Outlook, if that option appears.
- Confirm the installation. Open Outlook from your desktop application menu, or pin it to your dock if your desktop supports that.
In Microsoft Edge
- Update Edge, then sign in to Outlook on the web or Outlook.com.
- Open Settings and more, choose Apps, then Install this site as an app.
- Confirm. Launch it from your application menu and pin it to your dock if desired.
Browser labels and menus can change. Follow Microsoft’s current Outlook PWA instructions if a menu item is different or missing. Firefox is a supported way to use Outlook on Linux, but the installation instructions above are for Chrome and Edge.
The PWA is useful if you want an Outlook window separate from your browser tabs. Email, calendar and other features depend on your account, browser, and organization’s settings. Notifications require permission from Outlook, the browser, and your Linux desktop environment; they are not guaranteed in every setup. Offline access is also not full desktop-client functionality: do not count on every folder, action, or Microsoft 365 feature being available without a connection.

What works—and where the gaps are
For users who need Microsoft’s own interface, Outlook on the web is usually the safest starting point. It provides Microsoft-hosted mail and, where enabled for the account, calendar, contacts or people features, and organization-specific capabilities. Its available functions depend on the account and tenant. Browser access also cannot override an organization’s conditional-access rules, device-compliance requirements, or restrictions on Linux.
Use this comparison as a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. Features can vary with the Linux distribution, application version, account type, Exchange setup, and company policy.

Thunderbird: a strong mail client, not full Outlook parity
Thunderbird is worth considering if you want a conventional Linux mail client, local folders, filters, and offline email. Starting with Thunderbird 145, it added native Microsoft Exchange email support through Exchange Web Services (EWS), using Microsoft OAuth2 sign-in. But the project’s announcement said Exchange calendar and address-book support were not yet implemented, and Microsoft Graph support remained future work. That support has an important time horizon for Microsoft 365 users: Microsoft plans to begin disabling EWS in Exchange Online in October 2026, with full disablement planned for April 2027. This concerns Exchange Online, not on-premises Exchange Server. It does not establish that Thunderbird will stop working on a particular date; the effect depends on future Thunderbird protocol support and which features you use. But an EWS-dependent Exchange Online setup is not a safe long-term assumption. Microsoft’s EWS retirement timeline describes the change.

Microsoft describes POP and IMAP as providing basic email functionality and offline mail access, without the richer calendar and contact capabilities of Exchange-aware connections. IMAP may also be unavailable if the tenant disables it or the required OAuth sign-in is not supported by the configuration. Microsoft’s POP and IMAP guidance explains the distinction.
Before choosing Thunderbird for a work account, list the workflows you actually need: calendar sync, contacts, shared mailboxes, delegation, public folders, server-side rules, retention or compliance features, and Microsoft 365 add-ins. A successful sign-in and working inbox do not prove that those features work.

Evolution: a Linux groupware option to test
Evolution is a native Linux email, calendar, and contacts client, particularly relevant on GNOME. Exchange-related access depends on installed components, distribution packages, server configuration, authentication, and organization policy. It can suit users who want a desktop groupware experience, but it is not a universal or Microsoft-supported Outlook replacement.
Test Evolution with the actual account and required functions before relying on it for work. Ask whether your organization permits third-party clients and whether its authentication and conditional-access setup will work. As with Thunderbird, check whether any Exchange Online connection depends on EWS and how it will be affected by Microsoft’s retirement timeline.

Wrappers, Wine, and remote Windows
An unofficial Outlook wrapper may provide a convenient app window, launcher, or tray behavior. It generally repackages Outlook on the web rather than adding missing Outlook features. Before using one, check who maintains it, whether it receives timely updates, what browser engine it includes, and how it handles sign-in. A stale runtime or unclear credential flow creates avoidable security risk; your employer may also prohibit the software. For an app-like Outlook experience, installing the PWA directly from a trusted, current Chrome or Edge browser is usually the lower-risk choice.

Running Windows Outlook through Wine or another compatibility layer is a community workaround, not a supported installation method. Modern authentication, Office components, updates, licensing, and organizational policy make results uncertain. Do not rely on it for business-critical mail without current, version-specific validation.
If your role depends on Outlook desktop features such as particular add-ins, VBA or COM integrations, PST workflows, specialized delegation, or public-folder and compliance processes, use an organization-supported Windows or remote Windows environment—or confirm in advance that the web app covers every required task. A Linux browser or wrapper cannot bypass an employer’s access policy.
Microsoft 365 licensing does not add a Linux desktop app
A Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com account can provide access to the web service, subject to the account’s plan and organization settings. Microsoft distinguishes plans with web and mobile apps from those that include desktop Office applications; for example, Business Basic provides web and mobile versions, while desktop apps require a plan that includes them. Paying for desktop application rights does not give you a Linux Outlook binary. Check Microsoft’s Outlook licensing guidance and its current plan comparison for your region and account type.

Choose based on the work you need to do
- Choose Outlook on the web or its PWA when you need Microsoft’s interface and web-based Microsoft 365 features, and your organization permits browser access on Linux.
- Choose Thunderbird when native desktop email and offline folders matter more than complete Exchange calendar, contacts, and enterprise-feature parity. For Exchange Online, account for EWS’s announced retirement timeline.
- Try Evolution when Linux-native calendar and contacts are important, especially on GNOME, and you can test the actual Exchange authentication and features you need.
- Use supported Windows or remote Windows when your job requires Outlook desktop workflows that the web app and Linux clients cannot provide.
Quick troubleshooting
- Outlook will not load or sign in: Update Chrome or Firefox, allow required cookies and pop-ups, and temporarily check whether privacy or ad-blocking extensions interfere. For work accounts, ask your administrator whether Linux browser access or device compliance is required. Do not try to bypass company policy with a wrapper.
- The PWA install option is missing: Update Chrome or Edge, sign in to Outlook first, and check whether browser policy disables app installation. Try the other browser or use Outlook in a normal tab; installation availability can depend on browser state and policy.
- Notifications do not appear: Check Outlook’s notification settings, browser permission, Linux desktop notifications, do-not-disturb mode, and whether the PWA/browser can keep running in the background.
- Thunderbird signs in but calendar or contacts are absent: That is consistent with the limitations in Thunderbird’s cited Exchange announcement. Use Outlook on the web for those functions or verify another supported solution.
- MFA or OAuth sign-in fails: Check the account’s supported sign-in method and ask the administrator for help. Do not disable MFA or use an app password unless your administrator explicitly supports that approach. Exchange Online Basic authentication has been deprecated; see Microsoft’s guidance.
