What is Godzilla Minus One about?
Set in postwar Japan, the film follows survivors struggling to rebuild their lives while confronting a devastating, nuclear-enhanced Godzilla. Netflix describes the story as one in which a traumatized former fighter pilot joins a civilian effort to fight the monster.

Which Oscar did it win?
Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 2024 Oscars. That is the precise award: it did not win a horror-specific prize, Best Picture, or a general “Best Monster Movie” category.
The recognition was notable because the film is a Japanese-language monster drama rather than a conventional Hollywood prestige production. Its effects support the characters’ grief, fear, guilt, and postwar trauma instead of functioning only as spectacle. The Oscar is therefore a useful indication of the film’s technical achievement, but it does not fully describe why the movie connected with audiences.
Is it actually a horror movie?
That depends on how broadly “horror” is being used. Netflix primarily categorizes the film under action, science fiction, drama, military, monster, and action-adventure—not horror.

Still, the horror label is reasonable as a description of its experience. The film uses an apparently unstoppable creature, mass destruction, survival scenarios, dread, helplessness, and images of annihilation. Its story also draws horror from survivor’s guilt, national trauma, and the fear that rebuilding can be undone in an instant.
The most accurate description is an Oscar-winning Japanese kaiju drama with strong horror elements, or a horror-inflected science-fiction film. Calling it simply a horror movie is not entirely wrong, but it overlooks the character-driven drama and historical setting.
What is Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color?
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color is a separate monochrome version of the film. Netflix describes it as a “meticulously decolorized” presentation and lists it separately from the standard color release.

The color version is the best starting point for most first-time viewers because it provides the baseline presentation. Minus Color is a strong alternative for a repeat viewing or for viewers drawn to stark shadows, atmosphere, destruction, and the visual language of classic Japanese cinema.

What should you expect before watching?
- A somber tone: This is not only a fast-moving monster spectacle.
- A substantial human story: Survivors, civilians, family, responsibility, grief, and rebuilding receive considerable attention.
- Intense disaster imagery: Expect frightening monster attacks, destruction, death, wartime imagery, and scenes of large-scale vulnerability.
- Japanese original audio: Netflix’s returned listings include Japanese audio, along with English options in the checked listing, but language choices can vary by country, profile, and device.
How to watch it at home
For the performances in their original form, choose Japanese audio with subtitles when that option is available to you. A soundbar, headphones, or surround setup can make the monster’s roar, destruction, and quieter suspense scenes more impactful than weak built-in television speakers.

A dim room and uninterrupted viewing suit the film better than treating it as background entertainment. If you plan to use a large television or projector, check your Netflix plan, device, and local catalog for supported resolution and HDR features. Is it available on Netflix everywhere?
