Microsoft 365 Business Basic is a recurring, per-user business subscription—not a one-time Office purchase. It includes web and mobile versions of Office apps, business email, OneDrive storage and collaboration services. It does not include the full installable desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. If you need those desktop apps, compare Business Standard before ordering.
The most straightforward way to buy is through Microsoft’s official Business Basic page. Check the edition, billing commitment, renewal terms and final total shown for your market at checkout: price and availability can vary, and the figures Microsoft has surfaced are not consistent enough to treat as a universal current price.
Quick decision
- Choose Business Basic if your business needs hosted email, cloud storage, browser-based Office apps and online collaboration, and does not require the full desktop Office suite.
- Choose Business Standard if staff need installable desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook.
- Consider Business Premium if advanced security and device management are important requirements.
- Choose the no-Teams edition only if your organization does not need a Teams license.

Business Basic pricing: confirm the live checkout total
Microsoft offers billing choices that can include a monthly subscription or an annual commitment, with annual commitments potentially billed monthly or paid upfront. The more flexible monthly commitment generally costs more than an annual commitment. Do not confuse paying monthly with having a month-to-month commitment: the commitment term affects cancellation obligations.

Microsoft’s U.S. pages have surfaced different prices for the same plan, including different amounts for the Teams and no-Teams editions. Price can also depend on country, currency, taxes, promotion, billing method and changes to Microsoft’s pricing. Treat the amount and terms displayed in your Microsoft checkout as authoritative for your account and market, and review them immediately before placing the order.
On the product page, check whether the displayed plan includes Teams. Business Basic with Teams includes Teams licensing; the no-Teams version does not. Do not assume Teams chat, calls or meetings are included just because the plan name is Business Basic. Availability and plan presentation vary by market.

- Web and mobile Office apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. These are not the complete installable desktop applications.
- Business email and calendar: Exchange-based email, with the option to use your organization’s own domain after you configure it.
- Cloud storage: 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user, subject to current regional plan terms.
- Team collaboration: SharePoint sites and file collaboration, plus Teams when you select an edition that includes it.
- Additional business services: Services such as Bookings, Planner, Forms and Lists may be available as part of the plan, with features subject to Microsoft’s current terms.
- Business administration: A Microsoft 365 organization (tenant) for managing users and licenses. The first purchaser becomes the technical administrator.
Microsoft may also advertise AI chat features in its plans. Do not treat included chat functionality as a license for the separately licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot product; confirm the feature and licensing terms on the plan page.

Important: desktop Office is not included
Business Basic does not include the full desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. You can use the web and mobile versions, but Basic may not suit employees who rely on advanced Excel features, VBA macros, desktop add-ins, offline-first Office workflows or the full desktop Outlook client. OneDrive files can be synchronized for offline access, but syncing files is not the same as having desktop Office apps.
If desktop apps are essential, compare Business Standard and Business Premium. Microsoft 365 Apps for business is another possibility if users need desktop Office and OneDrive but do not need the full Business Basic email and collaboration bundle.
How to order through Microsoft
- Open the official Business Basic page and select Buy now.
- If Microsoft offers both, choose the edition with Teams or without Teams based on your needs.
- Select the number of users or licenses and the billing commitment and payment frequency you want.
- Enter an email address you can keep accessing for billing and renewal notices. Sign in with a Microsoft account or create the business account requested by the signup flow.
- Provide the organization details Microsoft requests and complete any phone or identity verification.
- Create the initial tenant username and password. Microsoft provides an
onmicrosoft.comdomain; you can add your own domain later. - Confirm the license count, then choose Add payment method and continue with checkout or the equivalent option presented.
- Before placing the order, review the product edition, Teams status, number of licenses, commitment term, billing frequency, recurring-billing setting, tax and total.
- Place the order and retain the confirmation. Then open the Microsoft 365 admin center to add users, assign licenses and continue setup.

The person who completes the initial signup becomes the organization’s technical administrator. Use an identity controlled by the business—not an employee’s personal account or an account likely to disappear when someone leaves. After setup, add at least one other trusted administrator and make sure the business can recover access to its admin accounts.

You can start with the tenant’s onmicrosoft.com domain and add a custom business domain later. Using a domain you own for branded email requires proving ownership and configuring DNS records with your domain provider. The practical sequence is:
- Add the domain in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Verify ownership using the method Microsoft provides, commonly by adding a DNS record.
- Configure the requested DNS records for Microsoft services and email.
- Create users and mailboxes, then assign the appropriate licenses.
- Allow time for DNS changes to propagate and test email before relying on the new setup.
Creating a tenant does not by itself complete custom-domain setup. If you are moving existing email, plan the migration and mail routing before changing records so that messages are not interrupted.
Billing, trial, renewal and cancellation
- Recurring subscription: Business Basic is not a perpetual license. Check the commitment term and renewal date before ordering.
- Trial, where offered: Microsoft may offer a one-month trial and require a payment method. A trial can convert to paid billing unless you cancel before it ends. Record the end date and check the recurring-billing terms in your account.
- Cancellation: Monthly commitment offers more flexibility than an annual commitment. Do not assume an annual commitment can be ended without further charges. Microsoft’s plan information has described a seven-day cancellation window for a prorated refund on paid subscriptions, but eligibility and terms can vary; read the terms shown for your subscription.
- Payment: Accepted payment methods and invoice eligibility depend on market, account and billing configuration. If payment is declined, check the billing country and address, card authorization and plan availability, or contact Microsoft support. Do not use false billing details to work around regional limits.
- Data before cancellation: Export or migrate important email, OneDrive files, SharePoint content and other business data before canceling or allowing a subscription to lapse. Post-cancellation access and deletion periods depend on the applicable Microsoft terms and subscription; do not rely on a particular retention window without checking your account’s terms.

How to verify you are buying the right thing
Microsoft’s official checkout is the appropriate place to enter payment details for a direct Microsoft purchase. Before submitting them, check the browser address for Microsoft’s genuine domain and an HTTPS connection, and confirm the product name, Teams status, currency, license quantity, billing commitment, renewal terms and final total. HTTPS alone does not prove that an unfamiliar seller or page is legitimate.
A third-party reseller can be legitimate, but establish what is being sold: a Microsoft license, a reseller-managed subscription or only a product key. Be wary of unusually cheap “lifetime” Office offers, shared accounts or credentials, and keys described as single-use. They may be unauthorized, already used, non-transferable or subject to revocation, and may not provide the account ownership or support a business needs. Avoid entering business files or payment details into an account whose ownership you cannot control.
