OpenWrt/LEDE at ELC refers to the Embedded Linux Conference 2017 session “OpenWrt/LEDE: When Two become One,” held in Portland, USA. LEDE had split from OpenWrt in 2016, then the projects agreed in January 2018 to reunite under the OpenWrt name. The merged project adopted LEDE’s governance rules and code base while incorporating qualifying OpenWrt patches.
What “OpenWrt/LEDE at ELC” refers to
The official conference listing names the session OpenWrt/LEDE: When Two become One as an ELC 2017 talk. ELC, the Embedded Linux Conference, is a vendor-neutral Linux Foundation conference for embedded-Linux developers, maintainers, project leaders, open-source program offices, community leaders and technical decision makers.
The session’s subject was therefore more than a router-firmware update. It was a case study in how an important embedded distribution handled a public fork, project governance, infrastructure, testing, documentation and release maintenance.
Why the session title matters
“When Two become One” describes a completed reconciliation, not an ongoing two-project arrangement. LEDE was a separate project for a period, but the January 2018 agreement restored a single project under the OpenWrt name.

Why LEDE was created in 2016
LEDE, short for Linux Embedded Development Environment, was founded in 2016 as a spin-off from OpenWrt. Its stated priorities were stability and functionality, predictable release cycles informed by community device testing, and transparent decision making.
The project’s history identifies several long-running concerns behind the fork:
Rank #3
- Full-Speed AX3000 Wi-Fi 6: 2402 Mbps (5 GHz) + 574 Mbps (2.4 GHz) with 160 MHz channels and 1024-QAM modulation — 2.5x faster than AC1200, delivering gigabit-plus wireless throughput for demanding homes
- OFDMA + MU-MIMO Dual-Band Efficiency: Bidirectional multi-user scheduling across both bands provides up to 16x more capacity on 5 GHz — smart home devices, streaming, and gaming all stay responsive simultaneously
- Four Gigabit Ports with IPTV/VLAN: 1x GbE WAN + 3x GbE LAN deliver full wired throughput; IPTV/VLAN support for TV subscription integration — connect gaming PC, smart TV, and NAS with wire-speed reliability
- VPN Server and Client Hub: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, PPTP, and L2TP server and client enable secure remote work; DNS over TLS with Cloudflare/Google/Quad9 encrypts browsing queries for privacy protection
- Cudy Mesh + 29-Language App: Wireless or wired backhaul creates one seamless home Wi-Fi network; Cudy App with cloud remote control, parental profiles, per-device scheduling, content filtering, and WPA3 security
- A low number of active core developers.
- Unreliable project infrastructure.
- Weak communication.
- Insufficient testing and release automation.
- Inadequate documentation.
These were project-maintenance and governance concerns, not a claim that the underlying idea of a programmable embedded GNU/Linux distribution was being abandoned. LEDE continued in the same broad technical area while placing greater emphasis on dependable operations and predictable maintenance.
What happened in January 2018
In January 2018, OpenWrt and LEDE agreed to re-merge. The settlement had four important parts:
- One project name: the reunited project continued as OpenWrt.
- LEDE governance: the unified project adopted the former LEDE governance rules.
- LEDE code base: the merged development base came from LEDE.
- OpenWrt contributions: qualifying OpenWrt patches were integrated.
The OpenWrt project’s account says the re-merge did not change the overall technical direction. The combined project continued stability work and release maintenance, including frequent minor releases for critical bugs and security issues.

Is LEDE still a separate project?
No. LEDE is best understood as the 2016–2018 fork and the source of governance and code that shaped the reunited project. It is not a separate official project alongside today’s OpenWrt.
OpenWrt and LEDE before and after the re-merge
| Comparison axis | OpenWrt before the fork | LEDE period | Unified OpenWrt after January 2018 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Governance | The concerns later cited by LEDE included weak communication and a need for more transparent decision making. | Transparent decision making was a stated goal. | The former LEDE governance rules were adopted. |
| Infrastructure | LEDE’s stated reasons for leaving included unreliable infrastructure. | Improving project reliability was a stated priority; the project history does not specify one single infrastructure model. | The post-merge infrastructure model is not stated in the project history. |
| Testing and releases | LEDE’s reasons for the fork included insufficient testing and release automation. | Release planning was intended to be predictable and informed by community device testing. | Stability work, release maintenance and frequent minor releases for critical bugs and security issues continued. |
| Code base | The existing OpenWrt code base. | A fork of OpenWrt developed as LEDE. | The former LEDE code base, with qualifying OpenWrt patches integrated. |
| Name and status | OpenWrt. | LEDE operated as a separate fork from 2016 until the agreement. | OpenWrt; LEDE no longer remained a separate official project. |
What the merger means for users
There is one OpenWrt project to follow
Users looking for current firmware, documentation or package support should look for OpenWrt, not a current “LEDE versus OpenWrt” choice. References to LEDE generally concern the historical fork, its development period or the governance decisions carried into the reunited project.
The distribution model stayed intact
The merger did not turn OpenWrt back into a locked vendor image. OpenWrt remained a writable, package-capable embedded GNU/Linux distribution for supported devices. The practical benefits and risks still depend on the exact hardware target and the quality of its current support.

Maintenance became part of the story
The post-merge direction explicitly retained stability work and release maintenance. Frequent minor releases were intended to address critical bugs and security issues, which is particularly important for software that commonly runs at the network edge.
Which routers support OpenWrt?
There is no universal answer based only on a brand or product family. OpenWrt support must be checked against the exact device model and hardware revision. A generic router listing may describe hardware that is unsupported, requires a particular installation image or has a different revision from the one documented by OpenWrt.
Use this hardware-check sequence
- Record the exact identity: note the manufacturer, model number and hardware revision printed on the device or its label.
- Check current OpenWrt support: find that exact target in the project’s current hardware documentation rather than relying on a retailer description.
- Read the device-specific installation instructions: confirm whether the documented process differs for the factory image, an upgrade or a recovery installation.
- Confirm recovery options: understand how the device can be restored if an installation fails, and preserve the original firmware and configuration information when the instructions call for it.
- Check support before buying: do not assume that a newer revision, regional variant or similarly named model has the same compatibility.
The honest product category is an OpenWrt-compatible wireless router. Compatibility should be verified first; a general “OpenWrt router” label is not, by itself, proof that a particular unit is flashable or currently supported.
Why an embedded-Linux conference covered the merger
ELC was launched in 2005 and brings together the people who build and maintain embedded Linux: developers, maintainers, project leaders, open-source program offices, community leaders and executives responsible for technical direction. OpenWrt and LEDE fit that audience because their story combines software engineering with the organizational systems needed to keep a widely used embedded distribution healthy.
